The Tulloch Stewarts were a cadet branch of the
Stewarts of Ardvorlich. Please refer to
the Ardvorlich page for a full introduction.

The Tulloch Stewarts are named for their residence in Balquhidder
parish. They descend from the Ardvorlich family in an unknown way, but
probably as a cadet branch of the "Flint" Stewarts in Lednascridan.
They are described in Stewarts of the South as:
The Tulloch Stewarts, on Sir John Murray's estate at Balquidder,
are
brothers to the Flints. Toun Drummadich bought by Sir John (Murray?)
from the Perth family is said to belong in ancient times to a
family of the name of Ross, [although] I cant say whither of Kinfauns or Craigie
near Perth.
From this reference it is presumed that the patriarchs of the
Tulloch and Flint branches were brothers, but just how far back those fraternal
patriarchs are has not been identified.
The Other Tulloch
Researchers of this family are cautioned in that there is
another property named Tulloch in Perthshire, also held by a family of
Stewarts, located in Blair Atholl. The Stewarts of Tulloch in Blair Atholl
are descended from the Stewarts of Fincastle and are no relation at all to
the Tulloch Stewarts on this page or to any branch of the Stewarts of
Balquhidder. Researchers need to be careful when coming across
documents pertaining to any Stewarts in Tulloch to make sure they pertain to the
correct family.
Robert STEWART of Tulloch, probably b abt 1600. Alive in 1644.
Robert is the subject of a renunciation by Robert Stewart in Tulloch to John
Earl of Atholl, for the lands of Auchintaychonittie (adjacent to Glenogle) and
Ballinluig (east side of Glenogle), possessed by Robert Stewart and his
sub-tenants. Dated 15 JUN 1644, Dunkeld.

Son STEWART of Tulloch, b ABT 1630 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Son STEWART of Tulloch b: ABT 1660 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland. No such person has been identified in records. He is
suggested as the father of:
-
"Alexander" STEWART of Tulloch b: ABT 1690 in Tulloch Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. No documentary evidence has been found for his
existence. He is suggested by onomastics only. He is suggested as the
father of:
-
Dougald STEWART of Tulloch b: ABT 1720 in Tulloch, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. Dougald's exact birth record has not been
identified, though it is believed that he inherited Tulloch from his father
in whose family it is believed the property had been held for several
generations. Dougall is recorded in Stewarts of the South as "Dougald
Stewart, late of Tulloch" and father of John Stewart in Aloa and Duncan
Stewart in Ledcreich. Thus, Dougall had died before Stewarts of the South
was written, ca. 1815. Dougald's wife was cited as a witness in the 1764
paternity trial of
Robert Stewart in Lednascridan. This could imply that Dougald
may have been dead as early as 1764 otherwise, as head of the family, he may
have been a preferred witness. The OPR data shown here is not confirmed but
represents the only excellent match and thus is probably correct. OPR
baptismal data indicates that Dougall Stewart married Margaret MCGREGOR,
although no record of their marriage has been found.
- Dougald's descendants are presented as Line 1 below.
-
John STEWART in Tulloch b: ABT 1725 in Tulloch, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in Stewarts of the South
as "John Stewart, late tenant of Tulloch", but his exact relationship to the
family is not given. However, John is also cited as a witness in the 1764
paternity trial of Robert Stewart in Lednascridan, in which John is
described as a brother of Dougal Stewart in Tulloch. John is described in
Stewarts of the South as having two sons: one a soldier, and the other a
bleacher in Campsie, but these sons are not named.
- John's descendants are presented as Line 2 below.
-
Son STEWART b: ABT 1728 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland. Stewarts of the South lists a James and Peter Stewart
among the extended family of Dougald Stewart of Tulloch, but does not
indicate the nature of their relationship. It would appear that they are
most likely nephews by a brother of Dougald's whom the author either didn't
know or omitted.
- This unknown son's descendants are presented as Line 2 below.
-
James STEWART b: ABT 1730 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland. James is described in Stewarts of the South as:
"James Stewart, brother to Dougald Stewart of Tulloch (Line 1 above),
Balquhidder, left three sons who are all in Glasgow in the Manufacturing
line and all of them in good circumstances."
- James' descendants are presented as Line 2 below.
-
Son STEWART b: ABT 1700 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
Stewarts of the South shows 3-Line of the Stewarts of Tulloch descending
in an unknown manner from the progenitor of the family. Given that there
are only three lines of this family and that 1-Line and 2-Line are shown as
sibling lines, then, in the absence of other evidence, it makes sense for now
to account for 3-Line as a first-cousin line. Thus we are showing Robert
Stewart and Duncan Stewart of 3-Line (below) as first cousins of Dougald
Stewart in Tulloch (1-Line, above).
-
Robert STEWART b: ABT 1730 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart left
one son, John, a shoemaker in Callandar."
- Robert's descendants are presented as Line 3 below.
-
Duncan STEWART in Clachglas of Glenbuckie b: ABT 1735 in
Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan is described in Stewarts
of the South as: "Duncan Stewart, late tacksman of Clachglass,
Glenbuckie, left two sons." Census and baptismal records for Duncan's
grandchildren would indicate that this family did not follow customary
naming patterns. The fact that Duncan named his two sons David and Duncan is
unusual as these names were considered to be Gaelic substitute names for
each other and thus synonymous. This is further indication that this family
did not follow customary naming patterns. As Duncan effectively named both
his sons after himself, it may indicate that they had different mothers, but
this is merely speculation.
- Duncan's descendants are presented as Line 3 below.
- John Stewart at Alloa, who is in the employment of
the Steens of Kilbeagie, was son to the deceased Dougald
Stewart, late tacksman of Tulloch. John has no sons.
- John Stewart, his nephew, is a shepherd at Tulloch. He has
one son who is
a minor. John was son to Duncan Stewart, a late tacksman at
Ledchrich, Braes of Balquhidder.
- Duncan Stewart, his brother, who is a shoemaker in Campsie.
- James Stewart, their brother, has gone to America.
This could imply that Dougald may
have been dead as early as 1764 otherwise, as head of the family, he may have
been a preferred witness. The OPR data shown here is not confirmed but
represents the only excellent match and thus is probably correct. OPR
baptismal data indicates that Dougall Stewart married Margaret MCGREGOR,
although no record of their marriage has been found. They had the
following children:
-
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 3 JAN 1753 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland. Alexander is not mentioned in Stewarts of the South
and thus is presumed to have died young.
-
Mary STEWART b: ABT 23 JUL 1755 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
John STEWART , in Aloa b: ABT 4 MAR 1758 in Tulloch, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. John was described as having "no sons" but he
may have had daughters.
-
Duncan STEWART , in Ledcreich and Invercarnaig b: ABT 10 MAY 1760
in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. According to Stewarts
of the South, Duncan resided in Ledcreich, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland and he d. bef 1815. However OPR data shows his residences at the
time of his children's births as being Invercarnaig and Blarcreich.
Whether Stewarts of the South is in error on the location or whether
Duncan lived in all three places is not known. The OPR data shown here is
not confirmed but represents an excellent match. According to OPR data,
Duncan Stewart married on 17 DEC 1783 in Balquhidder and 2 JAN 1784 in
Callander parish to Margaret MCGREGOR b: ABT 1760 in Callander,
Perthshire, Scotland. (Duncan of Balquhidder parish and Margaret
from Callander parish). They had the following children:
-
Dougal STEWART b: ABT 27 FEB 1785 in Invercarnaig, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. Dougal is not mentioned in Stewarts of
the South and is presumed to have died young.
-
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 30 JUL 1788 in Invercarnaig, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander is not mentioned in Stewarts of
the South and is presumed to have died young.
-
John STEWART , in Tulloch b: ABT 15 FEB 1788 in Invercarnaig,
Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in
Stewarts of the South as being "a shepherd in Tulloch". He married
on 23 DEC 1813 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland to Margaret STEWART
(both in this parish). Her birth family is unknown. They had the
following family:
-
Duncan STEWART b: ABT 14 APR 1814 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland. Duncan is mentioned in Stewarts of the South as
being a son of minor age.
-
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 6 DEC 1817 in Tulloch, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland
-
Robert STEWART b: ABT 15 SEP 1819 in Stronslany, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland
-
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 30 JUL 1788 in Invercarnaig, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. Alexander is not mentioned in Stewarts of
the South and is presumed to have died young.
-
Mary STEWART b: ABT 29 AUG 1790 in Invercarnaig, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland
-
Duncan STEWART , in Campsie b: ABT 2 JUN 1793 in Blarcreich,
Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. Duncan is described in
Stewarts of the South as being a shoemaker in Campsie, Stirling,
Scotland. Stewarts of the South mentions no children prior to
1815.
-
James STEWART b: ABT 1796 in Blarcreich or Tulloch, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. No OPR record has been found for him. James
is described in Stewarts of the South as having "gone to
America." It
is possible that Stewarts of the South may have his name
incorrect and he may be identical with either of the earlier sons,
Dougal or Alexander, however Stewarts of the South does list him
last.
-
Elisabeth STEWART b: ABT 10 DEC 1762 in Tulloch, Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland
John Stewart, late tenant of Tulloch, Balquhidder, left two sons:
- The one is a soldier.
- The other is a bleacher in Campsie.
Both of them have a family of sons.
(The relationship between John Stewart above and the next
three listings is not indicated in the original letter. However, it would appear
that James and Peter are sons of another brother of Dougald which the author has
omitted.)
- James Stewart, late tenant of Wester Invernenty,
Braes of Balquhidder, on the estate of the late Reverend Mr Stewart, had
four sons who are all undertakers of road and other works
about Glasgow.
- Peter Stewart in Gartmore Parish has four sons who are minors.
3 James Stewart, brother to Dougald Stewart of
Tulloch (Line 1 above), Balquhidder, left three sons who are all in Glasgow
in the Manufacturing line and all of them
in good circumstances.
John STEWART , in Tulloch b: ABT 1725 in Tulloch, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. John is described in Stewarts of the South
as "John Stewart, late tenant of Tulloch", but his exact relationship to the
family is not given. However, John is also cited as a witness in the 1764

He has

- Duncan Stewart, of Kirklind Flanders Moss, has
four sons who are labourers about himself.
Son STEWART b: ABT 1700 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
Stewarts of the South shows 3-Line of the Stewarts of Tulloch descending
in an unknown manner from the progenitor of the family. Given that there
are only three lines of this family and that 1-Line and 2-Line are shown as

to account for 3-Line as a first-cousin line.
Robert is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Robert Stewart left
one son, John, a shoemaker in Callandar." Robert was the father of:
-
John STEWART b: ABT 1760 in Perthshire, Scotland. John is mentioned
in Stewarts of the South in the following reference to his father:
"Robert Stewart left one son, John, a shoemaker in Callandar."
John's birth record has not been identified.
-
Duncan STEWART , in Clachglas of Glenbuckie b: ABT 1735 in
Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
Duncan was the father of:
-
David STEWART b: 1768 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland. David is
described in Stewarts of the South as: "David Stewart, Moss laird,
Summerline flanders moss. He has three sons, all at home." Fortunately
there is only one David Stewart listed in the 1814 Moss Census as residing
in Summerline which allows us to identify David and his family with
confidence. No birth record has been found for David. David and his wife
are recorded at the time of their marriage as being "both of this parish"
(Balquhidder). The Moss Census indicates they moved to the Moss about 1784
from Balquhidder. In 1814 they are recorded as possessing 1 cat, 2
chickens and 1 cow. David married on 29 NOV 1788 in Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland to Janet MCGREGOR b: ABT 1768 in Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following family:
-
James STEWART b: ABT 15 NOV 1789 in Wester Auchtow, Balquhidder,
Perthshire, Scotland
-
Christian STEWART b: 1791 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
Christian is described in the 1814 Moss Census as having died in 1791 at
the age of 3 months.
-
Christian STEWART b: ABT 19 MAR 1793 in Balquhidder, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Daniel STEWART b: ABT 5 JUL 1795 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. Daniel is described in
the 1814 Moss Census has having been born in 1791 and having died in
infancy. His baptism was recorded in 1795. It seems most likely that the
Moss Census has his date of death incorrect. Otherwise there would have
to have been two Daniels who both died as children, but the Moss Census
mentions only one.
-
Margaret STEWART b: ABT 14 SEP 1797 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
-
John STEWART b: ABT 3 MAR 1799 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Catherine STEWART b: ABT 10 MAY 1801 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. Catherine is described
in the 1814 Moss Census has having died in 1801 at 9 months of age.
-
Robert STEWART b: ABT 12 SEP 1802 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
-
David STEWART b: ABT 24 MAR 1805 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Janet STEWART b: ABT 17 JUL 1808 in Summerline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland. Janet is described in
the 1814 Moss Census as having died in 1809 at 9 months of age.
-
Duncan STEWART b: 1775 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland.
Duncan is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Duncan Stewart, of Kirkline Flanders Moss, has four sons who are labourers about himself. "
Fortunately there is only one Duncan listed in the 1814 Moss Census as
residing in Kirkline who also happens to have four sons (the second James
is likely an error) which allows us to identify Duncan and his family with
confidence. The Moss Census indicates that Duncan and his family moved to
the Moss about 1810 from Callander. In 1814 they are recorded as
possessing 1 cat, 2 chickens, 2 cows, 1 horse, 1 harrow, 1 plough, and 1
cart. Duncan married on 18 JAN 1801 AND 29 DEC 1802 in Crieff and
Callander, Perthshire, Scotland to Agnes\Ann MCGREGOR b: 1783 in
Perthshire, Scotland. They had the following children all of whom
were alive in 1814:
-
Alexander STEWART b: ABT 2 NOV 1799 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
-
Mary STEWART b: ABT 12 FEB 1806 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland
-
James STEWART b: ABT 4 JUN 1807 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Archibald STEWART b: ABT 6 AUG 1809 in Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire,
Scotland
-
Jannet STEWART b: ABT 14 DEC 1809 in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland
-
James STEWART b: 1810 in Scotland. The 1814 Moss Census shows
Duncan Stewart and Agnes McGregor with two sons named James, ages 7 and
5, however no baptismal record has been found for the younger of these.
This anomaly is as yet unexplained. It's possible that the enumerator or
transcriber made an error.
-
John STEWART b: ABT 16 FEB 1812 in Kirkline Moss, Blair Drummond,
Kincardine by Doune, Perthshire, Scotland
15 JUN 1644 - renunciation by Robert Stewart in Tulloch to John
Earl of Atholl, for the lands of Auchintaychonittie (sic adjacent to Glenogle)
and Ballinluig (east side of Glenogle), possessed by Robert Stewart and his
sub-tenants. Dated 15 JUN 1644, Dunkeld. (Settlements of Western
Perthshire p64). These lands were later granted in 1656 to Robert Stewart
in Glenogle.
The following family likely belongs to the Stewarts of Tulloch above, but
given the sketchy details presented in Stewarts of the South we cannot make a
confident match. The best match above appears to be 2 Line.
John STEWART and Janet STEWART in Cuill, Tulloch
and Edinchip.
Married 02 MAR 1793 in Balquhidder. (May be the same John Stewart who married
Janet Bowie above.)

= This person has known descendants.
ABT = "about" and is used in three ways:
-
Where it precedes a precise date of birth, such as "ABT 3 DEC 1855",
then it means that the person was baptized on 3 DEC 1795, but his/her
exact date of birth is unknown.
-
Where it precedes a semi-precise date of birth with the month only given, such
as "ABT DEC 1855", then that means that the birth is recorded in the civil birth
registrations for the quarter ending with that month. Thus the person's
birth was registered sometime between the beginning of October 1855 and the end
of December 1855, but no baptism record has been found nor any more precise
birth record.
-
Where it precedes a year only, such as "ABT 1855", then it means that there is no information on the person's birth date
at all and an educated guess has been made that he/she was probably born sometime
around 1855.
