a 2nd cousin of FRANCIS SCOTT KEY (the American Lawyer, who wrote the
"Star Spangled Banner", when the British were attacking Baltimore in Oct. 1814);

John H. SURRATT, Jr.was Baptized 1844 at St. Peter's Church,
Washington D.C. [REF:#1 pg14]
Studied for Roman Catholic priesthood at St. Charles College,
in Maryland, until Jul 1861; Became a Confederate dispatch rider; [REF:#1 pg20]
John Wilkes Booth met SURRATT in the fall of 1864. When SURRATT
heard of Booth's plot to kidnap President Lincoln, he willingly
joined Booth's group of conspirators. SURRATT took part in a
failed attempt to kidnap Lincoln on March 17, 1865. A carriage
the conspirators thought was Lincoln's turned out not to be.
According to SURRATT, his role in Booth's group ended with the
unsuccessful kidnap attempt. [REF:#10]
SURRATT's whereabouts on the night of the assassination have
been the subject of historical speculation. SURRATT, himself,
said he was in Elmira, New York, and that he then fled to Canada
after hearing news of Lincoln being shot by Booth. He was hiding
in Canada when his mother was hanged on July 7, 1865. [REF:#10]
SURRATT fled to England and then to Rome. He joined the Papal
Zouaves. When his whereabouts was discovered he went to Alexandria,
Egypt. There he was arrested on November 27, 1866. SURRATT was
brought back to the United States and went on trial for murder
on June 10, 1867. The jury heard 80 witnesses for the government
and 90 witnesses for the defense. The trial ended August 10 with
the jury deadlocked (4 votes = guilty; 8 votes = not guilty).
Eventually, SURRATT was freed in the summer of 1868. He had
benefited from the fact that he had been tried by a civil court. [REF:#10]
SURRATT became a teacher in Rockville, Maryland. At the court
house there on December 6, 1870, he delivered a 75 minute public
lecture on the conspiracy. Adults paid fifty cents to attend;
children paid a quarter. He admitted his role in the abduction
plot, but denied any part in the assassination. He blamed his
mother's execution on Louis Weichmann, the government's star
witness at the 1865 conspiracy trial. He called Weichmann a
"perjurer." He said his friends had kept from him the news
of the seriousness of his mother's plight in Washington.
Additionally, SURRATT said the Confederate government was not
involved in the plot. [REF:#10]
Another SURRATT lecture was scheduled and advertised in
Washington, D.C. for Friday evening, December 30, 1870.
However, enraged citizens forced its cancellation. [REF:#10]
Later (John H.) SURRATT secured a job as a teacher in St. Joseph
Catholic School in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Some time
after 1872 he was hired by the Baltimore Steam Packet
Company. As time went by, he rose to freight auditor
and treasurer of the company. In 1872 SURRATT married
Mary Victorine Hunter, a second cousin of Francis Scott Key.
The couple lived in Baltimore and had seven children. [REF:#10]

THIS DEED made this 23rd day of April in the year of our Lord one
thousand nine hundred and fifteen, by and between JOHN W.
RIDGELEY, of Washington, D.C. party of the first part, and
BLOSSIE K. MILLER and WILLIAM V. MILLER, as tenant in common, of
Prince George's County, Maryland, parties of the second part,
witnesseth.
WHEREAS Mrs. MARY E. (JENKINS) SURRATT departed this life a widow and intestate,
leaving her only heirs-at-law, one

ANNA S. TONRY (nec surratt), and
ISAAC SURRATT and
whereas the said ISAAC SURRATT departed this life [a66yrs 15 Nov 1907] intestate and unmarried, leaving as his only
heirs-at-law the said JOHN H. SURRATT and his nephews and niece,
ALBERT S. TONRY, REGINALD I. TONRY, WILLIAM S. TONRY, and CLARA
S. TONRY, only children and heirs-at-law of the said ANNA S.
TONRY, who died intestate, and whereas ALBERT S. TONRY, REGINALD
I. TONRY, WILLIAM S. TONRY, CLARA S. TONRY, and JOHN H. SARRATT,
have by various deeds conveyed their interest in the hereinafter
described property to JOHN W. RIDGELEY.
NOW, therefore, this DEED witnesseth, that in consideration of
the sum of twelve hundred and fifty dollars ($1,250) the said
party of the first part does grant and convey unto BLOSSIE K.
MILLER and WILLIAM V. MILLER, parties of the second part, their
heirs and assigns, in simple, all that piece or parcel of ground
situate, lying and being in Prince George's County, State of
Maryland, and being described as follows, to wit:
Being all that piece or parcel of land situated in Surrats
District, known as part of ""His Lordship's Kindness"", and
lying on the road from Washington, D. C. to T. B., Maryland, and
adjoining the property upon which the Catholic Church, at
SURRATTsville, Maryland, is situated, and found by recent survey
to be contained within the following metes and bounds, courses
and distances, to wit:
Beginning for the same at center of the intersection of the roads
from Piscataway to Upper Marlboro and from Brandywine to
Washington, D.C. and running thence with the center of the
Brandywine and Washington Road (1) North 14 15' West 544.6 feet
to the Church Property, with same (2) North 77 15' East 815 feet,
then leaving said Church property (3) South 15 30' East 519 feet
to Piscataway and Upper Marlboro Rd., with the center of same (4)
South 75 15' West 824 feet to beginning, containing ten (10)
acres.
TOGETHER with the building and improvements thereupon, erected,
made, or being; and all and every, rights, alleys, ways, waters,
privileges, appurtenances, and advantages to such the same
belongings or in anywise appertaining.
TO HAVE AND HOLD the aforesaid piece or parcel of ground and
premises above described or mentioned, and hereby intended to be
conveyed; altogether with the rights, privilege, appurtenances,
and advantages thereto belonging or appertaining unto the only
proper use, benefit and behoof for ever of the said BLOSSIE K.
MILLER and WILLIAM V. MILLER, their heirs as assigns.
AND the said party of the first part covenants that he will
warrant specially the property hereby conveyed; that he has a
right to convey said land; that the said parties of the second
part shall quietly enjoy said land; that he has done no act to
encumber said land; and that he will execute such further
assurances of said land as may be requisite.
