HURON COUNTY TOWNSHIPS
Stories and information on Huron County Townships taken from the book The Settlement of Huron Countyby James Scott, 1916. Ryerson Press, 1966
GREY TOWNSHIP
This township is bounded on the north by Howick and the Township of Wallace in the County of Perth; on the south by McKillop and Logan in Perth; on the west by the Township of Morris; and on the east by the Township of Elma in Perth. It was named for Charles, the second Earl of Grey, who came from an old Saxon family and who was an active political reformer throughout his entire life The township is almost square in shape and is third largest in the County with a total acreage of 64,746. It is made up of excellent land, rolling in character and with good drainage. The early settlers were mostly Scottish and English with some Irish and a few Germans. The first settler however, was a French Canadian by the name of Beauchamp who was a squatter who had taken up a holding in the township long before it was put up for sale as Crown Land and so can't be determined exactly where he settled. The second settler, John Mitchell, took up land in 1852 where the village of Molesworth stands. Other early settlers in the area of Brussels were - John and Duncan Ferguson Robert and Ronald McNaughton Peter McDonald a family called Hyslop Thomas Blackie James J. Ford five McFadzean brothers three families of Lamonts The population grew quickly and within ten years was almost 2,500.
