ASHFIELD TOWNSHIP
The Township of Ashfield was not part of the Canada Company's holdings and so settlers were discouraged by them. The odd settler did manage to get in and the first settler was a man by the name of George May who got clear title to land on Lot 1, concession 11 in May of 1835. The following year a Scotsman called John Runciman took out land on Lot 21, concession 11 near Dungannon and also an Irishman, William Dogherty settled near Sheppardton. In 1837 William Dougherty settled in the Dungannon area as well. It wasn't until William Hawkins got his idea to develop the land around Port Albert that settlers started to move in. In 1837 Andrew McConnell, Jerome Sharpe, and Stephen Martin settled in the area. The Township takes is name from a small village in Suffolk in England and it is assumed was name by William Hawkins, the surveyor. Its early settlers were primarily Highland Scottish with the Irish running a very close second and then the English. The first post office in Ashfield was at Port Albert, opened on November 6, 1851 with Thomas Longhead as the first postmaster.
