Settlement of McKillop Township was centered around two areas, known as "the Irish Settlement" and "the Scottish Settlement" The Irish Settlement was probably first as the Registry Office Records indicate that at least two Irish families (Michael Rawley and P. Carlin) had secured deeds for their land as early as 1827 and 1828. Their descendants lived in the areas known as Dublin and Beechwood for many years. Other early names in the Irishtown area were Dennis, Downie, O'Sullivan, Fox and O'Neill.
The first settlers in the Scottish Settlement arrived in 1832. (the Scotts and Dicksons). Other early names were Govenlock, Grieve, Hays, and Kerr and slightly later came names such as Cluff, Habkirk, Lapslie and Henderson. The third largest group amongst the early settlers was English, but it was about one-third of either the Irish or Scottish population. In addition there was a light sprinkling of German settlers. The development of the settlement was at approximately the same rate as those of the other original townships. Before 1845 there were only 321 people in the whole township. By 1860 there were 2,425. The major crops were wheat, potatoes, turnips, peas, and hay.
Within 15 years of its being set up as a separate municipal unit, seventeen of its citizens kept carriages for pleasure, indicating rapid developing prosperity of the township. McKillop is a township with no major village or town developed with the exception of the northern half of the Town of Seaforth. Some crossroads settlements developed to the point of acquiring post office status. The only two that reached a considerable size are located mostly outside the boundary of the township. Those are Dublin, which was originally known as Carronbrook, and Walton. The majority of Dublin is located in the County of Perth.
