[21280] Charleston Daily Mail Sat Home For Christmas Girl to End 3 1/2 year Stay in Hospitals Indianapolis- Laura Knuckles celebrates her fourth birthday Sunday and five days later she will enjoy her first Christman at home after 3 1/2 years in hospitals. At birth the bones in her chest were malformed in such a way that they squeezed the lungs. The condition normally ends in death. After four operations her ribs showed signs last January of growing and doctors slowly weaned her from a special breathing device. ON June 7 she left the hospital to go home for the first time. "The only santa Claus she ever saw before was the one who came to the hospital. She's really looking forward to going to see Santa this year instead of him coming to her", says her mother, Mrs Frank Knuckles, the wife of a high school English teacher. Laura accumulated a medical bill of $182,842.24 paid by the Indiana Blue Cross, the Marion County Public Welfare Department and the division of services to crippled children of the Indiana Dept of Public Welfare.
