The flames were extinguished with a few bucklets of water, before much damage was done. The fire department was out on time in both instances.

[4850] The Bourbon News Scandal in Frankfort Gen Nuckols, Adjutant General of the State, has been brought to the front in a column article of the Couisville Commercial in a way of a disgraceful scandal. It appears that a pretty little married woman names Mary Owens, went into the General's Office in mid-day on some business, and she alleges that he took her by the hand and offered her $1000 if she would love him as well as her husband. To this proposition she taurned a contemptuous ear , and secretly advised with her husband and a lawyer, and decided to bring suit for $10,000 damages. Judge Hord and Ira Julian informed the Commercial reporter that the suit had been compromised by Nuckols paying a small sum of meny - less than $400 says Julian, and a small instrument of writing from Nuckols to Owens. Nuckols disclaims committing any offense, or offering any insult, but Mr Julian says , "The worst that can be said of him he was only guilty of an indiscretion, and he certainly did the woman no harm."
[4851] Bourbon News Millersburg Kentucky Nuckols Denies Frankfort Kentucky April 22, 1882 -- To the Public: a correspondence published in the Louisville Commercial of this date, giving the details of an alleged scandal against me in connection with one Mrs. Mary Owens, I take this method of denouncing the entire charge as an infamous falsehood and lie, from beginning to end. I will state, further, that having information of the purpose of the said Mrs. Owens and her husband to make the charge, and knowing that it meant money, I did employ counsel and authorize them to obtain my indemnity from the person for a financial consideration. This was upon my part that I was to be spared the mortification of a public scandal. This, it appears, resulted in some delay on the part of the plaintiffs not giving sufficient time for service of summons to the first court having the jurisdiction. I will cure that trouble by my appearance at the first term and abiding the verdict of a Jury of my country. And coming with us before the public I make no appeal for sympathy, nor do I wish to forestall the opinion of friends or strangers. Very respectfully, JP Nuckols
[4852] Bourbon News, Millersburg, KY The Owen-Nuckols afair, at Frankfort is creating sensation. Gen Nuckles, if innocent, cannot afford to let the matter rest in the present light before the world. Nor can Mr Owens afford to accept money indemnity for such and insult as is alleged to have been offered.
[4853] Frankfort Roundabout, Frankfort, KY In attempting to get aboard of the 8:15 train at the depot Wednesday morning while it was in motion, Gen J P Nuckols, lost his footing and slipped under the car, but fortunately retained his hold upon the hand railing and was dragged some little distance until the train was stopped and he was relieved from his perilous situation.
[4854] Frankfort Roundabout, Frankfort, KY The celebrated damage suit of Mrs mary Owens against Gen J P Nuckols came up in the Circuit Court Monday morning. Judge P U Major was sworn off the bench by the plaintiff, and Judge Alvin Duvall was selected as a special judge to sit in the case. A jury was empanaled and the taking of the evidence was begun in the afternoon and the case continued to occupy the time of the court until Thursday when a verdict for the defendant was rendered.
[4855] Fort Wayne Daily Gazette Fort Wayne Indiana 28 October 1882 The Damage suit of Mrs Mary Owens against Adjutant General Nuckols of Ky was decided at Frankfort Thursday in favor of the defendant.
[4856] Frankfort Roundabout, Frankfort, KY We have read with disgust the Courrier Journals critisism on the Adjutant General's Office, as managed by General J P Nuckols and his efficient assistant Maj James Blackburn Jr. The people in this section regard these gentlemen as the right men in the right place.

She had obtained a divorce from Owens and he charged Johnson with alienating her affections and swore that he would take his life..
