John is a stray. This is the placement that Bud Sparling uses. Another possible placement is as the son of Christopher Sparling and Dorothy Cornelius who was also born in 1788. But as there was a Jonathan born about 1812 to this couple it is possible that John had died prior to this.
John is recorded as a discharged soldier resident on Lot 15, Con 9 in Goulbourn on 30 Oct 1822. This was land sold by John Sparling to John Macpherson for 12/10/0 in 1840.

1828 Return - Still on East 1/2 of lot 8 Con 6 - visited on 06 Nov 1827. Still showing 1 son and 2 daughters (James Prendergast apparently not worried about a correct count of family members. John now had 6 acres cleared with 3 more chopped. Microfilm C-2555, Reference RG1 L3L, Pg 78465(w)

Listed as 38,50 in 1871,81 census
Lived Conc 4 Lot 40 & 41 Thorne, Pontiac, Quebec 200 acres
Mr. Thos. Sparling, one of the old respected residents of Thorne, whose death was briefly mentioned in these columns last week, passed away very suddenly and unexpectedly about for o'clock on Friday morning, 9th inst., from a paralytic stroke. Mrs. Sparling heard her husband fall and hastening to his room found him sitting up leaning against the bed, but unable to speak. He expired in about five minutes afterwards.
The late Mr. Sparling was born on the property which latterly became the site of the village of Shawville, in the year 1830, and was therefore 75 years of age at the time of his death. He resided here till he was 22 years of age, when he married Miss Jane Lathem and removed to Thorne, in which place he has resided ever since. A wife and four sons and six daughters remain to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent parent. Four daughters are dead, the last of whom departed this life about three years ago. He had seven sons-in-law, all living as follows: Samuel Rooney, Cache Bay; James Ade, Bristol Mines; Julius Weigandt Bristol; John Cole, Quyon; Jos. Cole, Aldfield, and John Sparling of Thorne; John Rooney, Milestone, Man. The sons are George of Radford; Thos. J. of Thorne; James of Leslie; Henry of Bristol Mines. The surviving daughters are : Margaret, Mary, Lily Ann, Catharine, Jane and Emma. The daughters-in-law prior to their marriage were Misses Hannah Sly, Mary Sylvester, Sophia Bean and Annie Black.
During his long residence in Thorne, The late Mr. Sparling filled the offices of school commissioner, councillor, and mayor of the township as well as other major positions. In religion he was a Methodist of body which he was a consistent member for a number of years.
For 47 years he was connected with the Orange institution, and for 23 years of that time filled the position of master of one lodge.
His funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Ladysmith cemetery, and was the largest ever witnessed in that locality, about 500 persons assembling to pay their last tribute of respect to the remains. Four lodges of the order of which he was so long an honored member besides brethren from other lodges participated in the last sad duty of consigning the remains of their departed brother to their last earthly resting place.
