GAINES, HOLDERBY, MALCOM, WHITE, HARVEY, FELIX, LOUIS Great Grandmother Mary A. WHITE (MALCOLM/ WALTERS/HESTER) was born 7-10-1854, She was called Grandma Hester toward the end of her life. Mary was 1/2 Italian. Her mothers last name was LOUIS her fathers name of course was WHITE. Mary was probably married in 1871 to John MALCOM because her daughter Etna MALCOM was born in Trumball,Ill. 1-19-1872. ( Etna married Hilliard GAINES and had Margie and Paul Gaines, who both married Smiths, and other children, see family tree) Mary had two sons by John MALCOM; Robert Virgil Malcolm 1-3-1874/4-5- 1937, and J.C. Malcolm 3-6-1875. John Malcolm(might have served in the Civil War) must have died sometime between 1875 and 1881 because the next date I have is the birth of Marys fourth child, Charles H. Walters, born 1882. Hilliard GAINES b. 5-2-1869, Carmi, IL, was the son of John GAINES and Tabitha HOLDERBY. John GAINES b. TN may have served in the Civil War, Union. Tabitha HOLDERBY was the daughter of Nathaniel HOLDERBY b. 1811 and Nancy Jane HARVEY b.1813. Nancy Jane HARVEY was the daughter of Betsy Felix b. 1774 VA and Mr Harvey. This information is from Marian Ferguson, 1027 Doe Lane, Las Cruces, NM 88001-2320, who got it from Mary Holderby, late of Carmi, Illinois. Talk to you later. Liz Burns Glenn Madison, Alabama 1-205-772-1900 > > From my grandma Gaines ( Etna Malcom - Gaines) bible: Mr. White and Ms Louis (?b. 1820s ?) married and had, Mary A. White ( Malcom, Walters, Hester) - she married John Malcom and had Etna Malcom on 1-19-1872, Trumbull, IL (a town in White County that is no longer in existance), (3 brothers, one sister) Etna m. Hilliard Gaines in Carmi,IL on 3-2-1892, and had; Tennessee Gaines 1858, Nathaniel Gaines 1861, Hilliard Gaines 1869, Lucy Gaines Velmont 1871, Bud Gaines1873, Dave Gaines 1874, Tabitha Gaines (Butner) 1875. Hilliard Gaines was the son of Tabitha Holderby and John Gaines, John Gaines may have been in the Civil War, my uncle Jake Smith told me that them Gaines are damned yankees_, and John and Tabitha didnt have any children between; Tennessee Gaines 1858, Nathaniel Gaines1861, and Hilliard in 5-2-1869, about 8 years without any children and no birth control, I think John was probably at war. Hilliard and Etna had my father , Paul Gaines in 1898 Paul m. Dollie Smith, my mother ( the confederate side) and had me in CA in 1946. Dollie and Paul Gaines recieved money from the Holderby estate until the 1950s when they signed some papers that Etna Malcom Gaines told them to because they would get a cash settlement and they never recieved another thing.
