18th Infantry

§  John Basthons, 40 y. o., from Antwerp, a gardener. Enlisted 18 September 1861 in Columbus, Ohio in the 18 Infantry Co. A. Remarks: Discharged Sept. 11 1862 for disability at Nashville, Tennessee. No further information.

§Joseph Peters  was born may 1838 (or 1848 following the 1900 census, but it's highly improbable) and emigrated in 1848 (or 1858 following the same 1900 census). No trace of him in the 1850 census, but in the 1860 we find him working in the lumber mill of the Eldreds & Balcom in Stiles, Oconto County, Wisconsin.

He enlisted in the 18th U.S. Infantry, Co. G, in Marinetta, Wisconsin on May 24, 1862 and was discharged 3 years later, on May 24, 1865 at Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, a Private.

After the war he went back in Wisconsin, working in a saw mill in Menominee, first as a worker and later as foreman. He married in 1885 with Annie, newly emigrated from Germany. They had many children: Rosa, Berthe, Annie, Felix and Henry. They retired to Green bay and Joseph Peters passed away on February 28, 1912 in Waupaca, in the soldier's home as I suppose.

§John B. Sanfort  Enlisted 5 december 1862 at Indianapolis, Indiana in the 18th  Infantry Co. C, a butcher 32 y. o., He was discharged for disability at Camp Thomas, Ohio on June 3, 1864.  A hint but no proof : a John B. Sanfort also enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, Company 20.
