1st Artillery

§  John Smith enlisted at Key West, Florida, in the 90th New York Infantry on July 13, 1862, a Private of Co. H. He was discharged, with others, on January 6, 1863, to enlist in the First U. S. Artillery, Co. D, at the same place. He stated being a sailor from Antwerp and 25 years old, being born in April 1839. He was discharged at the end of the war, July 12, 1865 at Whites Ranches, Texas, still a Private.

He went back to New York and was married in 1866 with Adaline, born in New York from English parents. They had children: Charles, Adaline, Mary, Anny, Rebbeca, Lottie, Sarah, William.

John Smith enlisted anew at Fort Hamilton, New York on January 16, 1867 in the First Artillery Co. D for three years. At the end of his service, he reenlisted anew and was detached in the West Point Artillery till his discharge on February 5, 1874.

We find him in Brooklyn in 1880, earning his living as a butcher but he moved at one time to Troy, Renselaer, as he is listed there in 1900 as a Street Sweeper. He died on October 2, 1902.

§  Oliver Macumber
is something of an enigma. The only hint for him being Belgian is in his enlistment paper. There is no Macumber born Belgium in America, nor there are Macumber in Belgium. Either Macumber was an alias or his enlistment papers are at fault. Nevertheless, I'll tell what I found upon him.

Like John Smith, he enlisted in the 90th New York Infantry, but in New York, and was mustered as a Corporal on September 21, 1861. Returned to rank, no date given, he was also discharged on January 1, 1863 to enlist in Co. B, First U. S. Artillery at Beaufort, South Carolina. He was discharged on September 20, 1864 at camp Woodraff, VA, at expiration of service. No trace of him before or after his service in the Army.

§  Francis Coramous
, age 24, from Antwerp, a jeweler, enlisted in New York on April 15, 1861 in the 1st Artillery, Co E and the same Francis Caremans (or Coremans) reenlisted on February 2, 1864 at Stevensburg, Pa, for 3 years, but deserted at the end of the war on July 26, 1865. No other trace of him.
