The Bakali/Bakalis/Bakaly brothers were in Middletown in the
1910s to maybe early 20s. They
were from Brusa and knew Mrs. Petroglou back in Turkey.
I do not know if she resided in Middletown when they lived
there. .She did see them when she and Helen
visited Detroit. One
of the brothers was in the bread bakery business for a short period of
time and delivered bread in a horse-drawn wagon to the local
Middletown Greeks. The
bakery Bakaly became a grocer when he moved to Detroit and later
married my mother's second cousin Anastasia Vasilides.
My mother had two cousins (brothers Pete & Haji Vasilides)
in Detroit who always passed along family news about Anastasia. Billy
Vasilides, Pete's son, always drove down from Detroit to see me when I
was making my yearly two-week visits to Middletown.
Billy had very few relatives in Detroit--only
Bakaly, Anastasia and their son.
Their son told Billy about his father's bread deliveries in
Middletown, and Billy related the story to me.
I remember that Helen Petroglou one time asked Billy about the
Balakys. This is how I
know that Helen knew them. I
do not know if George Bakaly is the Bakaly who married Anastasia, but
Helen might know and be able to put this together.
And at the present time, this is such a long shot that I do not
think this is worth including in your immigrant history. Pete

Death Notice - Ted Sarris's mother's maiden nam was: Balabanos Note
George N. Revelos: My
grandfather George Revelos married Zaharo Kostanta.
Her sister Theodora married a Balabanos and they had four
children, Jim, Thomai, Maria and Ligeri.
Thomai married Pete Sarris, so you are right, Jim Balabanos was
Ted's uncle. The Sarris
and Balabanos were from the matriarchal side of the family.
Ted's brother Ilias in Greece, married my cousin Georgia who
was the daughter of Mihali Revelos, my dad's brother.
It caused a big stink in the village as the cousins eloped and
went to Athens. My mother
and I visited them in Athens years ago.
They had two sons. One,
I forget his name, was a died in the wool Commie.
He had posters of Lenin, Stalin and others plastered all over
his bedroom. So we are
related to Ted through his grandmother's sister. Pretty far out, but
he always called my dad and uncles, Uncle and my mother and aunts Thea.
I discussed this with Delores last Sunday in Church.
She remembers the Balabanos. _____________________________________________________________________ John

Bejelis left the Revelos employment and opened a confectionary at 904
