Reverend James Copus was killed by Indians on September 15, 1812 near Mifflin, Ashland County, Ohio. His homestead, where he died, became known as Copus Hill. The story is in many old Ohio history books and is summarized on the historical marker pictured on this site. Go to the photo album and click on the pictures to enlarge them to read the story. If you have the name `Copus` spelled with a `u` or you have heard the story of Copus Hill as part of your family history, then you are a descendant of Reverend James Copus. In the past few years, James Copus descendants have been reviving a family reunion, working together on the Copus genealogy, and trying to find all the living descendants of Reverend James Copus. In finding each other, we have had a great time sharing our knowledge of the Copus family and getting to know each other. The purpose of this site is to put this family history in one place where we can share it together and for all descendants to have a place to find each other and connect with each other. I will add information on each of James' children and descendants as I receive or find it and will be glad to add any pictures anyone has. Please contact me with any additions or corrections. I have included names of the living descendants so that we may find each other and be able to see what our relationships are to each other. If you do not want your name included, please let me know and I will remove it. I hope that all Copus descendants will sign my guestbook and leave your comments. Websites on my direct lines connected to the Copus family are or will be available soon. These names are CARDER, CHENEY, NEELY, MORRIS, MASON, and HALL. Information on these other surnames, the Copus Hill story, location of Copus Hill, and the reunion may be obtained by e-mailing me. Some exciting things are planned for this year's reunion. See the second entry in the guestbook for details. It will be frequently added to and updated.
