Death Records

Allen County Death Records ...

Ohio did not mandate birth records until 1867.  Before that local town or church records are all that exist if any exist at all.

Birth and death records from 1867 through 1907, are located at the Allen County Courthouse.   To obtain records, contact:

Research Clerk, Probate Division,
Court of Common Pleas,
Courthouse Fourth Floor,
PO Box 1243, Lima, OH 45802.
Phone:  419.223.8501

NOTICE:  Death certificates are now available at the Family Search Labs (LDS).  Here you may view and print an actual copy of the death certificate.

Birth and death records starting in 1908 are maintained at the Allen County Health Department.  Information is filed alphabetically by year.  To obtain a birth or death record, there must be a written request with the following information: Birth:  full given name, date of birth, place of birth and parents names (mother's maiden name); Death:  name of deceased, date of death, place of death.

Information on how to obtain certified copies of birth and death records is at the Health Department web site.

The records that are available to view here include deaths that occurred between December 1908 and December 31, 1959.  If a record exists in the index you may use the Certificate number when contacting the Health Dept for a copy of the record.

Use the links below to access the transcription of deaths recorded at the Health Department.  Records are listed alphabetically by surname.  Keep in mind the dates when these records began.  If your ancestor died prior to 1908 the death will not be listed here.  As always, there is room for error in the transcription or by the original Health Department recording of the event.  It is always possible that not all deaths were recorded.

Credit is given to Ed Van Horn, a past resident of Lima and ambitious researcher took on the task of transcribing the Allen County  birth and death records that currently reside at the Allen County Health Department.  Thanks to Ed's efforts, this data is available to Allen County, Ohio researchers.
