VIRGINIA STAR Wednesday, September 17, 2003 Old News From Nickelsville Reflects County Life Seventy-five Years Ago Omer C. Addington The following old news was taken from a Nickelsville High School Publication of December 1928. They called the publication "Salmagundi". Salmagundi is a mixed dish of chopped meat and pickled herring, with oil, vinegar, pepper and onions. This is a French 'word. The students probably called their publication Salmagundi because of the mixture of students. Clyde Hartsock has returned from Berea College. Glen Bond spent Thanksgiving with Miss Bess Bond. Mr. Drexel Meade spent most of his vacation hunting. Mr. Henry Meade of War, W. Va. spent Sunday with home folks. Miss Carrie Kilgore spent Thanksgiving holiday at her home here. Claude Innis has presented to dance the latest step, "The Turkey Step." Mr. Seibert Meade spent a weekend hunting with Mr. Maynard Meade. Miss Allie Moore spent part of her vacation with her sister Grace at Kingsport, Tenn. Professor V. S. Wolfe spent the Thanksgiving holidays with his mother in Nickelsville. Mr. Delmar Kilgore has advertised for a remedy for a gumboil on his lip. Miss Irene McConnell was shopping in Gate City and Kingsport Thanksgiving week. Claude Hartsock spent Thanksgiving hunting rabbits and eating turkey. The pupils of Nickelsville High School are very grateful to the faculty for a week's vacation for Thanksgiving. Mrs. L. E. Gillenwater had a wood chopping decal, which was followed at night by an "ole time dance." Prof . John Meade, a former teacher at Nickelsville High School was elected President of the Athletic Association of Dickenson County. Tate McConnell and Sam Culbertson former students of Nickelsvlle High School visited the school Monday, Dec. 3. Mr. Marion Perry who has been engaged in the mercantile business at this place with his brother has gone to Kentucky. where he has a position. Prof. B.C. Wolfe, Misses Ruth Addington, Anna Mae Dougherty, teachers of NHS attended the State Teachers Association at Richmond, during Thanksgiving week.
