Mildred McConnell's Scrapbook Articles
The Nickelsville High School graduating Class of 1928 held its first reunion on July 25th. Eleven members were present. There were seventeen in the graduation on May 14, 1928. Two members of the class are deceased. They are Lizzie Mae Salyer Castle and Carrie Kilgore. Stallard. The members present for the reunion were: Sam Culbertson, Robert Smith, Mark Nickels, Kern Francisco, Thelma Turner Freeman, Gladys Johnson Carder, Roxie Jessee Glenn, Monnie Wallace Boatright Money, Iva Nell Addington Hensley, Lola Dell Addington, and Elsie Frazier Dougherty. The members who were unable to attend were Ruth Bond Witt of Salem, VA., Cratie Vicars Osborne of Castlewood, Va., Lovella Addington Hilton of Hiltons, Va. and Gwendolyn McFarland Shelton of Kingsport, Tenn. The group met at Phill's Gr11l in Nickelsville for a delicious lunch together, then went to the schoolhouse for a tour of their beloved and cherished place of childhood knowledge. After touring the school and making some pictures they all went to the home of Elsie Frazier Dougherty for a watermellon feast. Everyone seemed to enjoy renewing old acquaintances and hearing from each other all the things that had happened to each one over the years since graduation day. Others present for the occasion were Mrs. Sam Culbertson, Mrs. Kern Francisco, Mrs. Mark Nickels, Mark Nickels, Jr., Jack Dougherty, Bill Money and Clarence Carter.
