SONS OF SOUTHERN SOLDIERS AT UNION, SC. GET SERVICE MEDALS
On May 10, an unusual feature of the Memorial Day observance here Saturday commemorating the valor, struggles, and sacrifices of the soldiers of the Confederacy was the presentation of " Service Cross" medals to sons of Confederate soldiers who served overseas in the World War. Ten Union boys who were with the Allied forces in continental Europe were given these medals and while they fought for the Stars and Stripes, in each instance their fathers fought for the " the banner of the Stars and Bars".
Following is the list who received these service crosses: EDWARD J. ARTHUR, HARRY F. GIBBES, HUNTER S. HARRIS, JOSEPH ALSTON HICKS, THOMAS A. HOLLINGSWORTH, JAMES FRED JEFFRIES, ALBERT G. KENNEDY, LEWIS WARDLAW PERRIN, SIDNEY GILBERT SARRATT and JOHN FROST WALKER.
Mrs. Macbeth YOUNG, an active member of the William Wallace Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, made the presentation.
Local chapter of the Daughters arranged an interesting program for Saturday. Crosses of Honor were presented to Confederate veterans by Mrs. J. FROST WALKER, state Historian.
Solicitor L.C. BLACKWOOD delivered the oration of the occasion. The veterans and invited guests marched to the First Methodist Church, where the annual dinner was served in the dining room of that church. In the afternoon the graves of all Confederate veterans in Union city will be decorated with flowers. There are 118 graves of Confederate soldiers in the two cemeteries of this city.
