W. D. Toler Dead
New Bern Daily Journal, New Bern, NC, Wed., Aug. 26, 1885
Died on Tuesday morning, Aug. 25th, at St. Elmo, Ala., W. D. TOLER, son of Chas. TOLER, of Swift Creek. Mr. TOLER left this city in '68 for Alabama, where he has been engaged in the turpentine business, and leaves three small, motherless children to mourn his loss, also an aged father and mother and sisters whom he has not seen for twelve years.

Mrs. J. D. Wingate Dead

Ayden Items....Mrs. J. D. WINGATE died at the Washington Hospital this morning. The remains will reach Ayden this evening and the interment will take place tomorrow. She is survived by her husband. She was a daughter of Mr. J. I. HUMBLES. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved ones.

Fernando Ward Dead

Mr. Fernando WARD, one of the county's best citizens, died this morning at his home in Pactolus township, after an illness of two or three weeks. Mr. WARD was about 66 years of age, and is survived by his wife, two sons, Messers R. W. and E. F. WARD, and five daughters, Mrs. C. M. JONES, Mrs. J. J. SATTERTHWAITE, Mrs. J. H. BRILEY, Misses Corrine and Ada WARD. He was also a half brother of Mr. J. J. CHERRY and Mrs. P. E. DANCEY. He was a member of the Christian Church and was once register of deeds of the county for a year, filling an unexpired term. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Miss Addie Johnson Dead

Miss Addie JOHNSON, of Kinston, aged about 50 years, died at one o'clock Sunday afternoon, at the home of her brother, Dr. H. JOHNSON, in Vanceboro, after an illness of several days with pneumonia. She was a sister of Mrs. C. D. ROUNTREE, of Greenville, the latter being at her bedside several days previous to and at her death. The remains were taken to Goldsboro for interment there today.

S. I. Fleming Dead

Mr. S. I. FLEMING, one of Pitt's good men and prominent farmers, died at 5 o'clock this morning at his home near Gum Swamp, four miles from Greenville. He had a yellow chill last week followed with pneumonia. Mr. FLEMING was in his 58th year, a member of the Universalist church and a man esteemed by a large circle of friends. He leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters. The sons are Messers. V. C., E. I., and Rufus FLEMING, and the daughters are Mrs. C. WASHINGTON and Miss Louise FLEMING. He is also survived by two brothers, Messers. R. R. and E. P. FLEMING. The burial will take place at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon in the family grave yard.

Mrs. Carrie Fussell Dead

Mrs. Carrie FUSSELL, of Falkland township, died this morning, and the remains will be brought to Greenville for interment in Cherry Hill cemetery at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. FUSSELL was a daughter of Mrs. Susan KINION and sister of Mrs. G. A. CLAPP, of Greenville.

Isaac C. Hardy Dead

Mr. Isaac C. HARDY, who had been critically ill for several months, died this morning at eleven o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sallie EVANS, on Dickinson avenue. He was 60 years old. Mr. HARDY leaves five daughters, Mrs. Mary ALBRITTON, Mrs. Sallie EVANS, of Greenville; Mesdames Chas. BAKER and W. E. NICHOLS, of Vanceboro; and Miss Emma HARDY, of Due West, S.C.  One sister, Mrs. Dan PATRICK, of Snow Hill, and Mr. Benj. HARDY, of Dover. The funeral services will be at the family burying ground, Saturday afternoon, at 4 o'clock.

Gus Shirley Dead

After an illness of typhoid fever lingering through two or three weeks, Mr. Guss SHIRLEY, of Greene county, died Wednesday morning in a hospital in Wilson. Mr. SHIRLEY, age 23, was a son of the late Henry SHIRLEY, of near Wooten's X Roads, Greene county, and a brother of our townsman, Mr. Geo. W. SHIRLEY. The remains were shipped to Farmville, from whence they were taken to the old family burial ground and there laid to rest Thursday afternoon in the presence of a large number of sorrowing relatives, a grief stricken and fond mother, and friends.

Henry I. TOOLE, Esq., Editor of the Wilmington Aurora, died in that place on the 28th ult., in 41st year of his age, leaving a family of five young children  His remains were moved Monday to his native county of Edgecombe to be with family.

Mrs. Elmer HARRINGTON, wife of Mr. C. D. HARRINGTON, died suddenly Friday evening at their home about four miles from town. Her death came as a shock to many relatives and friends, as she was in Greenville the day before attending the fair and then seemed in apparent good health. Mrs. HARRINGTON was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ashley WHICHARD, of Greenville. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon.

Farmville - Mrs. Jean A. JOYNER, 43, wife of C. A. (Dick) JOYNER died Saturday morning at 5:20 o'clock at her home, Route 2, Farmville.  Mrs. JOYNER was the daughter of Nettie FUSSELL ANDERSON and the late Lawrence R. ANDERSON of LaGrange.  Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at the home, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Z. B. T. COX, minister of the Farmville Christian Church, of which she has been a member for over 20 years.  Interment will follow in the Joyner family cemetery near the home.  Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are three sons: Charles D. JOYNER, US Coast Guard, stationed in Savannah, Ga.; Jesse G. and Bobby Lee JOYNER, both of the home; four sisters, Mrs. Gurney CHASE, Mrs. Marvin ROUSE, Mrs. Claudia WHITFIELD, all of LaGrange, and Mrs. Ross LAPEE of New Mexico; three brothers, Lawrence Jr., Joe and James ANDERSON, all of LaGrange.

Rev. Redding Moore Dead

Rev. Redding MOORE died Sunday near Farmville, at an advanced age. He was for many years a local preacher of the Methodist church, but owing to age and declining health had not been able to follow the ministry the last few years. He was a few months over 81 years old.

John J. VINCENT, 37, died in Veterans Hospital in Kecoughtan, Virginia, Saturday following two months illness. Funeral services will be conducted in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel Wednesday at 2 o'clock, by Rev. W. P. POPE Jr., pastor of the Greenville Church of God. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park.  Mr. VINCENT was a native of Greene County and had lived several years near Pactolus, before moving to Holland, Va. He had lived in Greenville for the past twelve years, and was last employed as an attendant at a local auto service station. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertha WHITAKER VINCENT; three sons, Jasper Earl VINCENT of Concord, Billy Ray VINCENT and Johnny Gray VINCENT of the home; three brothers, Charles VINCENT of Suffolk, Va., Clifton and Lyman R. VINCENT of Chesapeake, Va.; six sisters, Mrs. Hardee O'NEAL of South Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Alfred HARDEE of Greenville, Mrs. J. K. Hent Tripp Dead

Hent TRIPP, 67, of Ayden, died at his home Thursday morning of a heart attack. Mr. TRIPP was a partner for many years in the TRIPP Garage, a member of the Ayden Christian Church, a veteran of World War I, and a member of Black Hawk Tribe No. 47 of the Order of Improved Red Men. Funeral services were held from the Britt-Farmer Funeral Chapel Friday, conducted by Rev. Bennie PLEDGER, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Ayden Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, the former Lillis MCGLOHON; one daughter, Mrs. Ola Ray MCLAWHORN; two brothers, Levi R. TRIPP of Ayden and Lent TRIPP of Simpson; one sister, Mrs. Letha BALDREE of Ayden; one grandson.

Mrs. Dorcas Norris Dead

Died, in this City, on the 24th inst., at the residence of her son, B. H. NORRIS, Mrs. Dorcas NORRIS, in the 82d year of her age. The deceased was born in Pitt County, N.C., on the 10th of February, 1782, but at the time of her death was a citizen of Harnett County. She leaves behind three children and twenty six grand children to mourn their loss. She had been a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years, during which time she gave constant evidence of her Christian character.

Guy William Whitford Dead

Guy William WHITFORD, 60, died at his home in Ernul at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. He had suffered a heart attack a few hours earlier. Funeral services were conducted from the home at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon and burial followed in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in New Bern. Mr. WHITFORD was a farmer and had spent all his life in Ernul. For about ten years he was employed by the State Highway Commission. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mamie WHITFORD; two sons, Jimmie and Nat WHITFORD, of the home; five daughters, Miss Sadie WHITFORD of the home, Mrs. Thad CANNON of Vanceboro, Mrs. Dalton GASKINS of Bridgeton, Mrs. James SINGLETON of Norfolk, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Hardy WHITFORD, of Tarboro, Miss Carrie WHITFORD of Williamston, Mrs. Ethel JACKSON of Reelsboro and Mrs. W. B. SMITH of Vanceboro; and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Jim Bryan WILLIS, 59, died suddenly at his home in the Willis Neck community early Tuesday morning. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mr. WILLIS, a native of Craven County, has spent all his life in the Willis Neck community. He was a farmer and also worked as a barber in Vanceboro until he retired about a year ago. He was a member of the Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mavis NORRIS WILLIS; three daughters, Mrs. E. E. MILLS of New Bern, Mrs. W. C. HALE, Jr., of Willis Neck and Mrs. R. E. CAHOON of the home; and four grandchildren.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-----Joseph NOBLES, 45, died Tuesday night of a heart attack. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Bakersfield. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy SILL NOBLES; two daughters, Mary NOBLES and Trudy DOUGLAS of Bakersfield; a son, Daniel NOBLES of the U.S. Marine Corps, stationed in California; one granddaughter. Mr. NOBLES was the son of the late W. L. and Mary MOORE NOBLES of Greenville.

Kinston Items.....Mrs. Ellen C. KILPATRICK, wife of B. C. KILPATRICK, and daughter of Dr. WOODS, of Bell's Ferry, died quite suddenly on Friday night, November 26, of blood poison. She was a consistent member of the M. E. Church. On Sunday her remains wrere interred in the cemetery, followed by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Rev. N. M. JURNEY performing the funeral services.

Died in Hookerton, Greene Co, N.C., on Saturday evening, Nov. 4th, Mr. James A. MAY, in the 27th year of his age. He leaves wife and only child.

John W. Dixon Dead

Mr. John W. DIXON, 35, died suddenly at his home in Simpson, Monday night at 11:45 following an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at the Salem Methodist Church at Simpson Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 by his pastor, the Rev. John BLUE. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. The body will remain at the Wilkerson Funeral Home and will be taken to the Church one hour prior to the time of services. Mr. DIXON graduated from the Belvoir-Falkland High School and attended Greer Technical Institute in Chicago, Ill., graduating in 1956. Mr. DIXON had lived in Simpson for a number of years and was a farmer and fertilizer dealer. He was a member of the Salem Methodist Church, the Simpson Ruritan Club and the Simpson Fire Department. He was a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Frances EDWARDS DIXON; a son, John Reginald DIXON of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. DIXON of Simpson; two brothers, Burwell H. DIXON of near Greenville and Edward Earl DIXON of Greenville; and three sisters; Mrs. Leonard F. JONES of Rustburg, Va., Mrs. Ralph L. TYSON of Greenville, and Mrs. Hal V. STOUT of Wilmington.

Mrs. Laura Skinner Dead

Mrs. Laura SKINNER, wife of T. S. SKINNER, and daughter of Mr. Leander FAULKNER, died of typho-malaria, November 25. Aged about twenty-three years. During her last illness she suffered much, and her death was not unexpected. Our sympathies run out to those who are thus bereaved.

Rev. Lewis B. Weatherington Dead

Rev. Lewis B. WEATHERINGTON, 79, died of a heart attack at his home near Calico Crossroads Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. He had been in declining health for several years. Funeral services will be conducted from the home Friday afternoon at 2:30 by the Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist minister of Bethel, assisted by Rev. C. J. HARRIS, Free Will Baptist minister of Greenville. Burial will be in the Jackson family cemetery near Ayden. He was born and reared in Craven County, but had spent all of his life in the Calico Crossroads community. He was a Free Will Baptist minister and had served as pastor of a number of churches in the eastern section of the county. He was first married to Priscilla VANDIFORD of Pitt County in 1896, and she died in 1907. Surviving this union is a daughter, Mrs. Henry WHITEHURST of Stokes. He was married second to Mary JACKSON of Pitt County in 1908 and she died in 1923. Surviving this union are two sons, Lewis WEATHERINGTON of the home and Glenn WEATHERINGTON, of near Farmville; two daughters, Pearlie and Queenie WEATHERINGTON of the home; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; a foster daughter, Mrs. Dora BRYANT of near Stokes and two foster grandchildren. He was married third to Mrs. Myrtie TRIPP CANNON of Vanceboro in 1926 and she survives.

Ed Calvin Smith Dead

Mr. Ed Calvin SMITH, 77, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital Thursday afternoon at 1:40 p.m. following several months of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel Saturday afternoon at two o'clock by the Rev. David E. LUPTON, pastor of the Grimesland Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. Roy O. WILLIAMS, pastor of Shelmerdine Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. SMITH was a native and lifetime resident of the Grimesland Community of Pitt County and was a farmer until his retirement due to ill health. He was a member of the Grimesland Methodist Church and the Grimesland Shawnee Tribe No. 62, Improved Order of Red Men. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sadie E. SMITH; a son, Clifton SMITH of Norfolk, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence ELKS and Mrs. Russell ELKS, both of Grimesland; 18 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; four step-children: Clarence T. CARROW of Portertown, Raymond L. CARROW of Greenville, Mrs. Ella HUDSON of Hudson's Crossroads, and Mrs. Luther HADDOCK of Grimesland; a brother, Bryant SMITH of Greenville; and a sister, Mrs. Bet ARNOLD of Grimesland.

Henry Vandiford Struck By Train

Henry VANDIFORD, a white man about fifty-five years old, was struck by a Norfolk-Southern freight train near Greenville near noon today and was instantly killed. He was walking the trestle just east of the water-tank when the freight came around the curve and struck him before it could be stopped. He was knocked off the trestle and fell about twenty-five feet, his head striking a stump, killing him instantly. His skull was badly fractured by the fall. Mr. VANDIFORD lived about seven miles from Greenville on the Plank Road; and was in town this morning. For some reason he went the wrong road and wandered onto the trestle where the fatal accident occurred. He is survived by a wife and several children. The burial will take place tomorrow.

Mrs. Eva WILSON MOBLEY, 83, died Thursday night in Reno, Nev. Funeral services and burial will be in Reno. The body will be at Whalton Funeral Home in Reno. Mrs. MOBLEY spent most of her life in Greenville and for the past two years had made her home with her daughter. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. B. R. (Novella) GLISZINSKNI of Reno, Nev.; a son, Elbert MOBLEY of Springfield, Va.; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. A. F. WINDOM of Greenville and Mrs. E. G. COWAN of Windsor.

William Bowen Dead

Mr. William BOWEN, 46, died in Pitt General Hospital at 6 o'clock Thursday night after two weeks illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the home near Ormondsville at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon by Rev. W. B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville, assisted by Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist minister of near Bethel. Burial will be in the Bowen family cemetery nearby. Mr. BOWEN was born, reared, and spent his entire life farming in the Ormondsville community. He was a member of Saint's Delight Free Will Baptist church. He was married to Miss Annie BOWEN January 8, 1922. His mother, Mrs. Kate BOWEN, died January 3, 1944. Surviving are his wife, a son, Travis BOWEN, and a daughter, Nora Lee BOWEN, of the home; his father, W. W. BOWEN; two brothers, Charlie and Raymond BOWEN; two sisters, Mrs. Ed DAIL and Mrs. Samuel WORTHINGTON, all of the Ormondsville community of Greene county.

Mrs. Martha Green Dead

Mrs. Martha Jane GREEN, aged 75 years, died at her home in Shelmerdine Sunday morning at seven o'clock from a lingering illness of two years duration. Mrs. GREEN was the widow of the late Fenner GREEN of Pitt county, who preceded her to the grave fourteen years ago. Before marriage she was the daughter of the late Blount ADAMS and Martha BULLOCK ADAMS of the Shemerdine community. Mrs. GREEN was one of the oldest members of Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church and manifested much interest in her church as long as she was able to attend. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. H. D. FORNES, Greenville, Mrs. Calvin MILLS, Vanceboro, Mrs. Elizabeth GARDNER of Shelmerdine and one son, W. H. GREEN of Shelmerdine; also three sisters, Mrs. Priscilla GODLEY, Mrs. J. D. SMITH, Mrsz. Fannie LEWIS, and one brother, J. T., ADAMS, all of the Shelmerdine community. Funeral services were conducted from the late home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. J. W. BERRY, pastor of the Pentecostal Holiness Church of Greenville, assisted by Rev. W. H. LAUGHINGHOUSE, her former pastor at Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

Mrs. Shade Harris Dead

Mrs. Shade HARRIS, aged forty four, died this morning at eleven o'clock, at her home in Belvoir Township. Funeral services will be conducted at the home tomorrow afternoon at one o'clock, by Rev. E. B. JOYNER. Interment will follow in the family burying ground. Mrs. HARRIS was an active member of the Gum Swamp Free Will Baptist church. Mrs. Daisy HADDOCK HARDEE, 79, died Monday morning in Pitt Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Peoples Bible Church by the pastor, Rev. John T. WOODLEY. Burial will be in the Winterville cemetery. The body will be carried from Clark's Funeral Home to the church one hour prior to the time of services. Mrs. HARDEE was married to the late John HARDEE in 1906. He died in September 1959. She was the oldest member  of the Peoples Bible Church. Mr. DILDA, a lifelong resident of this community, was a member of  Dilda's Grove Free Will Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mr. JOHNSON was born in Craven County, but had spent most of his life in the Clay Root section of Pitt County. He was married to Miss Nora E. FRANKS in December 1891 and she died in April 1948. After the death of his wife he lived with his daughter, Mrs. L. D. WALL. He was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church and was a retired farmer. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. L. D. WALL of the Clay Root community; three sons, Zeb JOHNSON of Vanceboro, S. L. JOHNSON of Washington, N.C., and Heber JOHNSON of Farmville; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Col. Jesse J. Baker Dead

It is with pain that we announce the death of one of Goldsboro's oldest and most respected citizens, Col. Jesse J. BAKER. The sad event occurred at 5 o'clock Monday evening, while he was in discharge of his duty attending the collection of taxes at the Court House. Colonel had been in feeble health for some time, suffering from heart disease, but his death was unexpected, and on the day of his death he had seemed more cheerful than he had been for several days. His sudden death was a shock to this entire community, where he was uniformly esteemed and respected. He was a native of Pitt county, but had lived here the greater part of his life. His age was 74. Col. BAKER will be greatly missed by our citizens, and this entire community extends to his bereaved family the sincerest sympathy in this hour of affliction. The funeral which took place yesterday, was largely attended, under the auspices of the masonic fraternity.

Burial will be in the McLawhorn family cemetery near Cox's Mill. Rev. C. L. PATRICK, Free Will Baptist minister of Greenville, will officiate. Mr. EVANS was born in Pamlico County and came to Pitt County when a young man. He was a member of Greenville Free Will Baptist Church. He was married to Mary MCLAWHORN in 1894 and she died in 1929. Of this union, surviving are three sons, Harvey EVANS and Bruce EVANS of Greenville, and Robert EVANS of Towanda, Ill.; four daughters, Mrs. Lula EVANS of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. David DIXON, Mrs. Hollie MILLS, and  Mrs. Zula WILLIAMS, all of Greenville. In 1932 he was married to Mrs. Alice STOCKS JACKSON and she survives. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; one brother, Robert EVANS of Vandemere; one sister, Mrs. Della BOYD of Grimesland.

J. R. Ernul Dead

In Craven county a few days ago, J. A. ERNUL, a man of bad character, shot at his uncle, J. R. ERNUL, aged 76 years, inflicting a wound in latter's foot. The case was being heard before the mayor of New Berne Tuesday and while the elder ERNUL was testifying he dropped dead. Whether death was due to the wound inflicted by the nephew is not stated.

HANEY, pastor of the Eighth Street Christian Church, and burial will be in the Evans family cemetery near Greenville. Mr. FORBES was born in Pitt County and was a farmer here until he moved to Jacksonville in 1941. His wife, the former Pearl EVANS, died in 1927. He was a member of Red Oak Christian Church. Surviving are a son, William H. FORBES, Jr., of Greenville; two grandchildren, Amanda Pearl FORBES of Greenville and John Marvin FISHER of Jarvisburg; a brother, Robert FORBES of Washington, N.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Mrs. SAVAGE, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. B. FLEMING, was born and reared in Pitt county and had been living in Rocky Mount for the past fifteen years. She had lived in Greenville for several years prior to moving to Rocky Mount. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Falkland. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Max and Baxter SAVAGE of the home; a daughter, Miss Norma Frances SAVAGE of the home; four sisters,  Mrs. H. L. BROWN of Falkland, Mrs. H. T. Richard Harris Dead

A colored man named Richard HARRIS was drowned near Falkland, Pitt county, Sunday. He attempted to ford a creek that was badly swollen and got in where it was too deep. The team got out safe. A bottle of whiskey was found in the negro's pocket, says the Reflector.

Jamesville-----Mrs. Mary Ella DAVENPORT, widow of J. L. DAVENPORT, died at her home in Jamesville Tuesday morning at 9:45 after several year's illness. Her condition had been critical for about one week. The daughter of the late Rev. Samuel MOORE and Mrs. Nancy WARD MOORE, she was born in Pitt County near Bethel on February 12, 1872. In early womanhood she was married to Mr. DAVENPORT and moved to Martin County, locating a few years later in Jamesville where Mr. DAVENPORT was engaged in the merchantile business for a number of years. She was a member of the Methodist Church for more than half a century. Surviving are ten children, Charlie and Oscar DAVENPORT, Mrs. H. G. GRIFFIN, Mrs. O. W. HAMILTON, Mrs. P. C. BLOUNT, Jr., Mrs. H. A. SEXTON and Mrs. W. W. WALTERS, all of Jamesville, Zeno L. DAVENPORT of Gumberry, Mrs. Ernest EDMONDSON of Hassell, and Mrs. Harvey MANNING of Bethel; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. R. S. BURNETTE and Mrs. Charlie JAMES, both of Bethel; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted in the Jamesville Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock by her pastor, the Rev. B. E. BINGHAM, assisted by the Rev. W. B. HARRINGTON. The Greenville Weekly says that Redding NORRIS, a farmer of Beaver Dam, Pitt county, committed suicide last week by cutting his throat from ear to ear. He had recently lost his wife and while brooding over his loss indulged in excessive drink.

Thomas Dawson Dead

Petersburg, Va., June 18....Intelligence has been received here of a terrible tragedy committed in Lenoir County, N.C. It appears that Ann MCDONALD, wife of William MCDONALD and Jane DAWSON, wife of Thomas DAWSON, had been intimate friends. While discussing some family matters became involved in an angry quarrel and abusive words followed. The husbands were present at the time and took sides with their wives. Finally the two men became engaged in a fight, during which MCDONALD shot and killed DAWSON. The murdered has been arrested and committed for trial.

Funeral services will be conducted at the home near Black Jack at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon by Rev. J. Cleve WILLIAMS, Holiness minister of Greenville. Burial will be in the Williams family cemetery nearby. Mr. WILLIAMS spent all his life in the Black Jack community and was a farmer. CLINTON----Mr. Charlie R. CASE, 72, retired radio repairman, died at his home here Saturday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Butler Hill Free Will Holiness Church, Clinton, N.C., by the Rev. Ruben JONES, Free Will Holiness Minister of Fayetteville. Burial will be in the Spell Cemetery at the Tyndall Grove near the home. The body will be taken from the home, 1216-A Sunset Ave., Clinton, to the church one hour prior to the time of services. Mr. CASE was a native of the Bell Arthur community and lived in Greenville until he retired in 1962 and moved to Clinton. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nora CRAFT CASE; a son, Richard G. CASE of Clinton; a daughter, Mrs. Bernice F. JACKSON of Clinton; two brothers, G. Aaron CASE of Greenville, and Archie CASER of Bethel; a sister, Mrs. Rosa C. Mrs. Maude GASKINS, 67, widow of W. C. GASKINS, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hicks SMITH, in Ada, Oklahoma at six o'clock Wednesday morning following a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mrs. GASKINS was born and reared near Vanceboro, She was married in 1908 and lived in the Black Jack community until the death of her husband in 1927. She had lived with her daughter in Greenville until she went to Oklahoma in December, 1948. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville. Mr. STOCKS, a native of Pitt County, had lived in Winterville for the past seven years. He was a member of the Winterville Free Will Baptist Church, the Mohican Tribe No. 56, Improved Order of Red Men of Winterville, and was a retired farmer. A masonic service will be conducted at the grave by the members of the Grifton Masonic Lodge No. 243 A.F. and A.M.  Mr. WHITFORD spent most of his life in Pitt County. A veteran of World War One, he was engaged in farming, and was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church, the Grifton Masonic Lodge, Greenville Chapter, No. 50, Royal Arch Masons, Bethlehem Commandery No. 29, Knights Templar, New Bern Lodge of Perfection No. 6, and Sudan Temple of New Bern. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice AUTRY WHITFORD; a son, Z. O. WHITFORD, Jr. of the U.S. Navy, now stationed in Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Bobby STOKES of near Greenville; a sister, Mrs. Bluma WHITFORD COWARD of New Nern; and five grandchildren.

Died at his home, near Willow Green, N.C., at 5 o'clock on the morning of the 3rd of June, W. S. DARDEN, aged 73 years, of heart disease. He went out to look after his stock, and fell dead in the lot. Mr. DARDEN was and had been for years a consistent member of the Disciples Church. He was a kind husband and father, good neighbor, every inch a man, in every sense a gentleman. He has gone to his reward; I have known him for seventeen years and feel sure that the Great Arbiter of the universe will deal tenderly with that noble spirit in which those who know him most intimately, could find no guile. Here we leave him until the morning of the everlasting day breaks upon the grave.

Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. FLAKE was born and reared in Pitt County at Bell Arthur and was married to Miss Mamie J. LANGLEY of Falkland in 1919. They made their home in the Bruce community for many years and had been living in Kinston since 1951. He retired in 1965 from the Caswell Training School where he was an attendant. He was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church near Greenville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mamie LANGLEY FLAKE; five daughters, Mrs. George B. WEATHERINGTON of Jacksonville, Mrs. George B. Stuart BRODIE. Mr. TUCKER was a native of the Winterville community of Pitt County and son of the late Tom and Pattie SMITH TUCKER. He had been a resident of Florida for many years and was a retired Deputy Collector of U.S. Customs. He was a member of the Order of Elks and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Tampa. He was also a member of the American Legion and served in World War I. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ruby BELL TUCKER; a daughter, Mrs. Ted B. MABRY of Fort Benning, Ga.; a grandson, Michael MABRY of Stetson University at Deland, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Grover MUMFORD of Greensboro, and Mrs. William CROSS of Sunbury; and a brother, G. L. He was a member of the Hamilton Methodist Church and had served on the Official Board for many years. He was a member and Past President of the Hamilton Lions Club, served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was in active combat in France. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Myrtle SYLIVANT SMITH, formerly of Snow Hill; a son, James Robert SMITH, Jr. of Ayden; a brother, C. D. Mrs. MANNING has been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for many years, and was a war mother.. Her husband, T. B. MANNING, died about four years ago. He was a member in the State Senate in 1868-69, and since has served as Register of Deeds, to which office he was re-elected at the late State election. He was a highly esteemed member of the Baptist church.

LITTLE, left this morning for Petersburg not knowing of his death. The remains will be brought home tomorrow for burial at the family homestead, near Grimesland. He was about forty years of age and is survived by his father, Mr. W. G. LITTLE, one brother, Mr. J. L. LITTLE, and one sister, Mrs. Cornelius BARNHILL.

Hartwell CAMPBELL of Dunn, a former pastor. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mr. CANNON was born and reared near Ayden. He came to Greenville in 1926 to live. He had been engaged in the tobacco business the past 43 years. He was a senior member of the B. T. CANNON & Sons, operators of the Dixie and Cannon's warehouses. For the past two years he had operated an auctioneering school in Greenville. He was a member of the Greenville Tobacco Board of Trade and the Immanuel Baptist Church. Allen FORBES, 45, died at his home in Winterville at 10:45 p.m. Friday after several months' illness. Graveside services will be conducted in the Winterville cemetery Sunday at 3 p.m. by Rev. W. B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville. Members of Mohican Tribe No. 56, Improved Order of Red Men, will have charge of the services. Mr. FORBES, son of the late Allen and Winnie STOCKS FORBES, was born in Pitt County and had lived in Winterville for about 15 years. He was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church and Mohican Tribe No. 56, Improved Order of Red Men. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dora WILLOUGHBY FORBES; a daughter, Mrs. Mary F. FORLINES of the home; a foster son, Z. L. (Tick) FORBES of Ayden; a half-brother, O. L. PARKER of Kenansville, and two sisters, Mrs. Walter JAMES of Greenville and Mrs. Frank T. WHITEHURST of Bethel.

Mr. Thomas (Tom) MILLS, 63, died Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock at Parrott Hospital in Kinston, N.C. after a week of illness. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 at the Wilkerson Chapel by the Rev. Floyd B. CHERRY, pastor of the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Mills Family Cemetery near Black Jack. Mr. MILLS was born and reared in the Black Jack community and had been living near Kinston for the past 16 years. Surviving are four brothers, Hyman MILLS, Louis Henry MILLS, Glenn MILLS and Horace MILLS, all of Black Jack; three sisters, Mrs. Fred HADDOCK of Hollywood, community, Mrs. Daisy JAMES of Calico and Mrs. Jasper HARDEE of Ayden.

John R. Overton Dead

Mr. John Richard OVERTON, 44, died in Tayloe hospital in Washington Wednesday afternoon at 1:15 following two weeks of critical illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Missionary Baptist church in Pactolus this afternoon at 3:30 by the Rev. J. E. HOYLE, baptist minister of Winterville, and burial was in the Wilson family cemetery nearby. Members of the Pactolus Ruritan club served as active and honorary pallbearers. Mr. OVERTON, son of the late James Redman and Mary WILSON OVERTON, was born, reared and spent his entire life in Pitt county. He was married to Miss Annie NOBLES of near Stokes in September, 1936. He worked with the State Highway Department from 1927 to 1937, and since that time, he had been a farmer. Mr. OVERTON was a member of the Pactolus Ruritan club and the Pactolus Missionary Baptist church. He was also committeeman for the Pactolus Township A.A.A. Surviving are his wife; and four sisters, Mrs. J. S. CHERRY of near Washington, Miss Pauline OVERTON of Washington, Mrs. M. H. LINTON of Durham, and Mrs. M. K. PORTER of near Greenville.

Mrs. John Randolph Dead

Mrs. Renda WHICHARD RANDOLPH, 74, widow of John F. RANDOLPH, died in a Raleigh Nursing Home Thursday night at 8:30. She had been in failing health for the past few years. Funeral services were conducted at the Sweet Gum Grove Free Will Baptist Church Saturday afternoon at three o'clock by the pastor, the Rev. W. H. WILLIS, assisted by the Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist Minister of Bethel. Burial was in the Bethel Cemetery. Mrs. RANDOLPH spent all her life in the Stokes community and was a member of Sweet Gum Grove Free Will Baptist Church. She was married to Mr. RANDOLPH in 1905 and he died in 1952. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Zula W. RAWLS of Eastover, S.C., Mrs. John YEAGER of Rochester, New York, Mrs. F. D. COOPER of Raleigh, and Mrs. Gordon A YOUNT of Hickory; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ida Purser Dead

VANCEBORO-----Miss Ida PURSER, 61, died Sunday at 5:45 a.m. at her home in Vanceboro following several months of ill health. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 3 p.m. at the Vanceboro Methodist Church and burial was in the Vanceboro Cemetery. Her pastor, the Rev. H. B. JONES conducted the service. Miss PURSER had spent all of her life in the Vanceboro community and had been associated with several stores in Vanceboro. She was a member of the Vanceboro Methodist Church and was the Sunday School secretary and treasurer for 20 years. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Emma BUTLER PURSER of the home; two sisters, Miss Ethel PURSER of the home, and Mrs. C. L. SPIVEY of Vanceboro; and a niece, Mrs. D. W. LANGLEY of Raleigh.

Mr. John W. MOORE, 86, died in Lenoir County Memorial Hospital in Kinston Friday morning at 12:27. He had been in declining health for two years. Funeral services will be conducted at the home in the Willow Green Community near Ormondsville Saturday afternoon at three o'clock by the Rev. Danny WAINRIGHT, Free Will Baptist minister of Greenville. Burial will be in the Hollywood Cemetery in Farmville. Mr. MOORE spent most of his life in the Willow Green community and was a member of Saints Delight Free Will Baptist Church at Ormondsville. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mattie BRAXTON MOORE; two sons, Belmont MOORE of Washington and Melvin MOORE of Farmville; six daughters, Mrs. Lyda BUTTS of Williamsburg, Va., Mrs. Carrie ELKS of Newport News, Va., Mrs. Rena TAYLOR of New Bern, Mrs. T. E. POLLARD of Greenville, Mrs. R. T. ALLMOND of Denbigh, Va., and Mrs. Charlie COX of Maury; 53 grandchildren; 71 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Georgia Ann BAKER and Mrs. Pattie PILGREEN, both of Greenville.

Knott Sutton Dead

Mr. Knott SUTTON, 49, died in a Greensboro Hospital Wednesday afternoon after one day of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel Friday afternoon at four o'clock by the Rev N. D. BEAMAN, Free Will Baptist minister of Snow Hill, assisted by the Rev. Willis WILSON, Free Will Baptist minister of Robersonville. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. SUTTON was a native of the Black Jack Community and had been employed in Greensboro for the past twelve years. He was the son of the late Richard SUTTON and the late Mrs. Lula SUTTON HADDOCK. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Herbert TRAVIS of Black Jack Community; one brother, Ralph SUTTON of Grimesland; three half-sisters, Mrs. John STOCKS of Black Jack Community, Mrs. Robert L. OWENS of Greensboro, Mrs. Albert PHIPPS of Cherry Point; and his step-father, Levi HADDOCK of Black Jack Community.

William F. Evans Dead

William Franklin EVANS of the Allendale Apartments, 34-24 Eighty-second Street, Jackson Heights, Queens, principal attorney of the Office of Division Counsel, Bureau of Internal Revenue, Empire State Building, died yesterday in St. John's Hospital, Long Island City, Queens. His age was 67. Mr. EVANS was born in Greenville, N.C., and was a former State Senator from Pitt County. He served for several years as prosecuting attorney at Raleigh, N.C. Entering the Federal service in 1930, he started with the Treasury Department. Later he was with the Home Owners Loan Corporation. He had held the divisional post here for nine years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Eva ALLEN JACKSON, and two sons, Robert H. EVANS of Jackson Heights and William F. EVANS, Jr. of Wilmington, N.C.

Mr. Marvin Glenn NICHOLS, 54, died Wednesday afternoon at Pitt Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack a few hours earlier. Funeral services will be conducted at the home in the Penny Hill Community Friday afternoon at four o'clock by the Rev. L. B. MANNING, Free Will Baptist Minister of Fountain. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. NICHOLS was a native of Greene County and had lived in the Penny Hill Community for the past twelve years. He was a farmer and a member of Little Creek Free Will Baptist Church at Scuffleton. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Adell ELKS NICHOLS; three sons, Marvin and Curtis NICHOLS of Penny Hill and Clifton NICHOLS of the home; six daughters, Mrs. Franklin T. POLLARD of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Floyd H. HARRELL of Tarboro, Mrs. William F. WHICHARD of Texas, Misses Shirley Faye, Evelyn, and Myrtle Lou NICHOLS of the home; eight grandchildren; two brothers, David NICHOLS of Penny Hill and Elmer NICHOLS of Pitt County; two sisters, Mrs. W. P. GIBSON and Mrs. C. W. HOLLARD of Greenville.

Mrs. Lula CAMPBELL MAYO, 68, widow of J. H. MAYO, died at 4:45 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at her home in Grimesland. She had been critically ill for two weeks. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at four o'clock at the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by the Rev. J. J. GRIMES, Methodist minister of Grimesland. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. MAYO spent all her life in the Grimesland community and was the daughter of the late William and Julia HODGES CAMPBELL. She was married to Henry MAYO in 1904, and he died in 1940. She was a member of the Grimesland Methodist Church. Surviving are five sons: Sam MAYO and David MAYO of Grimesland, Roy MAYO of Winterville, and Arthur MAYO and Charles MAYO of Miami, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Joe BULLOCK of Tarboro, Mrs. H. A. JONES of Verona, N.C., and Mrs. Robert YOUNG of Chula Vista, California; 19 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; seven sisters, Mrs. Mittie CARSON of Chocowinity, Mrs. Tom ANGE and Mrs. L. F. ANGE of Newport News, Va., Mrs. L. F. TAYLOR and Mrs. L. G. WYNN of Grimesland, Mrs. J. S. TAYLOR of Greenville, and Mrs. George HEATH of Oak City; and two brothers, W. J. CAMPBELL of Greenville and J. A. CAMPBELL of Washington.

Mr. G. Hendrix HARRIS, 86, died Sunday at 3:45 a.m. at Pitt Memorial Hospital following a year of declining health. . Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the Wilkerson Chapel by the Rev. Milton WORTHINGTON, pastor of Parkers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mr. HARRIS spent all his life in the Greenville community of Pitt County and was a farmer until he retired and moved to Greenville 12 years ago. He was first married to Lellie JOHNSON and she died in 1949. He was later married to Mrs. Letha NICHOLS, who survives him. He was a member of Parkers Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife; four sons, Jack HARRIS, C. Paul HARRIS, and George H. HARRIS, Jr., all of Greenville, and Earl HARRIS of Washington, D.C.; five daughters, Mrs. J. V. WHITEHURST of Bethel, Mrs. Ruby H. EDWARDS of Greenville, Mrs. Ruth LOMBARDO of Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Allie MCCASKILL and Mrs. Martha STRINGER, both of Washington, D.C.; 32 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 10 step children, John, Floyd, Ray, Hilton, James and Carl NICHOLS, and Mrs. Ed HARRELL, Mrs. Willie WILLIAMS, Mrs. Johnnie SIMMONS, and Mrs. Joseph HADDOCK, all of Greenville; and a brother, W. Robert HARRIS of Greenville.

Mrs. Jennie WILSON LEGGETT, 75, widow of James F. LEGGETT, died Wednesday morning at 9:30 in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Va. after months of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Leggett was born and spent most of her life in the Greenville Community in Pitt County and for the past fifteen years had lived in Norfolk, Va. with her daughter, Mrs. Mildred LEGGETT PENDERGRASS. Mr. LEGGETT died in 1925. She was a member of the Fairmount Park Free Will Baptist Church in Norfolk, Va., and the extension department of the Indian River Baptist Church. Surviving are two sons, James F. (Jack) LEGGETT of Norfolk, Va. and Clarence LEGGETT of Cary; four daughters, Mrs. Mildred L. PENDERGRASS and Mrs. Gurney HARRELL of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. R. W. WILLIAMS of Rocky Mount and Mrs. L. C. BELL of Greenville; 15 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother, Willie Fink WILSON of Sykesville, Md.; and a sister, Mrs. Mary FORBES of Morehead City.
