North Carolina Standard, Raleigh, NC, February 12, 1862 Died, on the 28th Jan., at the General Hospital near Manassas, of pneumonia, Jonas Johnston ATKINSON, son of John A. and Esther ATKINSON, grandson of Samuel RUFFIN and great grandson of Col. Jonas JOHNSTON of Revolutionary memory, who was wounded at the Battle of Camden and died on his return home. Immediately after the beginning of the war, the deceased entered the service of his country as a private in Capt. Jesse S. Barnes Company and was stationed at Ft. Macon for two months. He afterwards volunteered for the war in the same company (F), 4th Regiment, N.C. State Troops, and went to Virginia and was located near Manassas Junction. He was a mild and gentle young man in his manners, amiable in his disposition and beloved by all who knew him. Having been tenderly raised and being totally unaccustomed to the toils and privations of military life, his constitution was naturally delicate and gave way under the hardship. Although it was not permitted him to go down on the field of battle amid the fearful booming of cannon, the sharp rattle of musketry and the wild dashing of sabers; although no kind sister stood by his bedside to smooth his dying pillow and no affectionate mother was present to wipe the dew from his brow; yet his brave and noble hearted companions in arms ministered to his wants and dropped the tear of sympathy over the rude pallet of the soldier. The deceased was a native of Edgecombe County, N.C. There are at present time three more brothers in the Confederate Army, two (privates) in Virginia and one lieutenant R. W. ATKINSON in the 18th Regiment State Troops (3rd Cavalry).

Suicide---Capt. ROGERS, in command of a company of militia from Martin Co., committed suicide by shooting himself through the heart at Fort Hill on Sunday evening last. He was in middle life and leaves a wife. His mind was evidently unbalanced.
Washington Dispatch. Died in Tarborough, on the 25th ult., John R. COBB, of the Spartan Band, aged about 24.

Died, at Rocky Mount, N.C., on the 3rd inst., Captain Frederick H. JENKINS of Edgecombe Co., aged 25, from typhoid fever. He commanded a company at the battle at Newbern and bore himself well. He was a Christian and a worthy citizen. He leaves a wife and two children.

Departed this life in Wilson, N.C. on Thursday, 7th August, Major Jas. S. WHITEHEAD, 55th Regiment N.C.S.T., son of Howell WHITEHEAD, Esq., of Pitt Co., N.C. This excellent man and gallant officer was in the service of his country at the falling of Hatteras and was a prisoner at Ft. Warren from August of last year to February of this one. He was at the time in the Washington Grays, the first company formed in Beaufort County. Upon his return he raised a company of his own which was assigned to the 35th Regiment on which, upon its formation, he was elected major. During the last seven years of his life he was a member of the M. E. Church South and for several years was a useful office bearer in that church. He was in attendance upon a court martial at Kinston when he was attacked by his last illness which continued a fortnight and was endured with exemplary patience. A portion of that time he seemed especially blessed with the comforts of our divine religion. In his delirious hours his spiritual interests and his military duties seemed to absorb and divide his attention; sometimes he would be giving orders and caring for the welfare of his men and at other times would break into expressions of most earnest prayers, his words being more coherent than at other times. Thus has passed away in the 27th year of his age one of the noble army of our Christian patriots who are fighting the battle of our freedom and enrolling their names among its blessed martyrs. As a son and brother, as a citizen and soldier, as a friend and Christian gentleman, he endeared himself to many who will keep his memory fresh and lively in their hearts and strive to imitate those virtues which made him so noble a specimen of manhood.

Died in Richmond, in April last, of erysipelas, Private James W. RICKS, aged about 39 years. At Rocky Mount, 30th June, of bowel disease, Private B.A. RICKS, aged about 37. Killed in the recent battle near Richmond, James H. LAMMON, aged about 21 years; all members of the Confederate Guard, Captain E.D. FOXHALL of Edgecombe Co.

Died, near Sharpsburg, Md., Captain Jason T. JOYNER, Company K, 27th Regiment N.C.T. in the 20th year of his age. This young and gallant officer was mortally wounded in the Battle of Sharpsburg on the 17th Sept., and died on the 19th. Among the many gallant dead who sacrificed their life in defense of their country�s liberties there are none more worthy of praise than Captain JOYNER. From the ranks, he rose rapidly to the head of his own company having occupied almost every subaltern position in the short space of six months. He was twice unanimously elected captain of his company. His military knowledge combined with his genial disposition and kindness of heart gained for him the confidence and love not only of his command but of the whole regiment, both officers and men. The number of the enemy bullets through his clothes attest to his fearless courage and heroic firmness in times of danger. Pierced by four balls he remained calm and undaunted at his post until mortally wounded by the fifth, the fatal one. His brother ran to him and asked him if he was hurt much. His reply was �I am killed, brother�. These were his last words upon the field. He as borne to the camp by four of his men where he was tenderly nursed by a kind friend and his favorite physician and where he calmly breathed his last. His remains were taken to Charlestown and buried. Dear comrades, our beloved captain is gone! We will cherish his memory as long as our hearts continue to throb. He sleeps quietly in a soldier�s grave near the spot where the first armed ruffian and invader of our homes receives a just reward upon the scaffold for his hellish and diabolical purposes. He leaves a devoted mother, an affectionate sister, two loving brothers and a host of warm friends to sincerely mourn his loss. R.W.J.

At Wilson Hospital, 1st April, of erysipelas, Private Russell TIER [TYER], Company G, 44th Regiment. No braver, truer soldier than Russell Tier has fallen a victim to the war. In the skirmish, which the 44th Regiment had with the enemy at Tranter�s Creek, June 5, 1862, the conflict in which the gallant Col. G. B. SINGLETARY was killed, the subject of this notice, seeing him bleeding and almost fainting, told him to go to the rear. His heroic reply was �Captain I cannot walk, but I can fight yet�. And he did fight until a retreat was ordered. His wound disabled him for the field and he was detained in the Wilson Hospital. While there, he cut his foot severely with an axe, and typhoid fever and erysipelas supervening, he died 1st April, 1863, respected by all who knew him. R.S.

Captain Joseph Adrian WILLIAMS departed this life 23rd November, 1863 at Richmond of wounds received in battle, in the 24th year of his age. The death of this promising and young officer deserves a more extensive notice than the above announcement. He was born in 1839 in Pitt Co., N.C. His father was Dr. Robert WILLIAMS, a native of North Carolina and at an early age established a reputation as a physician. His grandfather was also a doctor of no small repute, a surgeon in our army during the American Revolution. His mother was a Miss DRAKE, an accomplished and gifted lady. His youthful training began at home under the tuition of James MURRAY, a learned scholar and completed at the University of North Carolina in 1859. During the interval from the time he graduated until the beginning of the present war, he spent most of his time traveling. He purchased a farm in Arkansas. He had just returned home to remove his household goods thither when the war began. His polished manners and generous nature were a passport to the most select social circles. His mind was strong and of great originality and his humorous disposition and ready wit made him a pleasant companion. His friendship, when once secured, was firm and steadfast, changing not with the tide of events. He was vigilant and active in the performance of his duties. He received two severe wounds in the Battle of Bristow Station on Oct. 14, 1864. His surgeon pronounced his wound mortal but he lived so long that hopes were entertained for his recovery. He was removed to Richmond as soon as possible where after lingering about six weeks he passed away. R.W.J.

J. R. Warren Dead

Died Saturday [Oct. 29] at his home near Falkland, J. R. WARREN, age 62, a good citizen of Falkland township.. He left a widow and four children. His parents came to America from England and settled in Halifax County. When but a child his parents both died leaving him without relations here and from early boyhood was compelled to work hard for his support. After he reached manhood he moved to Pitt County. He developed bright�s disease a few years ago.

Bynum Barnhill Dead

Mr. Bynum BARNHILL, one of Bethel�s oldest citizens, died at his home in that town last week. Some days before, he suffered a fall and never recovered from its effects. He was 80 years old and leaves a widow, aged 87 and several children and grandchildren. Mrs. John WARD, of this place is one of his daughters.

Judy Roberson, age 120, Former Slave

Judy ROBERSON, col., died on the Roberson farm in Belvoir township on the 13th of June, at the advanced age of 120 years. She belonged to the Roberson family, and a few years ago, before the death of Mr. John ROBERSON, son of her first master, the date of her birth was traded up and it is said that the above age is correct. She was able to do some work up to this year. She picked a little cotton and did some other light work last year.

Benjamin F. McLawhorn Dead

Mr. Benj. F. MCLAWHORN, a citizen of Contentnea township, died very suddenly on Sunday morning. Upon arising that morning he spoke of feeling better than usual, and after breakfast spent a short while in reading the Bible to his wife. Then they conversed on the Bible, and Mr. MCLAWHORN remarked that he read it through last year but was not sure that he would live to read it through this year. He put up the Bible, filled his pipe for a smoke, and upon taking a few draws leaned against the bed, near which he was sitting, and died almost immediately. Heart disease was the cause of his death. He was a consistent member of the Antioch Baptist Church, and leaves a wife and seven children. All of his children are grown.

Sallie F. Mayo Obituary

The subject of this memorial Sallie Mayo was the daughter of Luke S. and Martha FLEMING, was born Nov. 6th, 1870. She was happily married to Josephus C. MAYO Nov. 9th, 1891. To them a baby was born May 11th, 1893. It died July 8th, 1893. She never regained her health after the death of their baby. Strickened with grief for her child she contracted consumption and died December the 2nd, 1893.

Mrs. Polly DAIL, a lady said to be 112 years of age, died last Friday morning at the home of her son, Mr. Theophilus DAIL, 5 miles from Greenville, and was buried Sunday. She retained her faculties remarkably well for a woman of such advanced age. Her son is now in his 69th year.

Caswell CARSON, nearly ninety years old, died at his home near Pactolus last week. He was very feeble and died rather suddenly.

E. W. Little Dead

Thursday morning, March 7, Mr. E. W. LITTLE died at his home after five years of failing health, being seriously ill for the past week. Mr. LITTLE was a man of splendid character, being active in the community and church, and a prosperous farmer as long as his health permitted. He was loyal to his family, and an ever loving father and husband. Fifty-three years ago, Mr. LITTLE was married to Miss Mattie S. CORBETT, a daughter of the late Dempsey CORBETT. Surviving are his wife, four daughters, Mrs. N. M. DUKE and Mrs. J. F. MOORE of Falkland, Mrs. G. A. BROWN of Greenville, and Miss Mattie LITTLE, who is attending Mitchell College, Statesville, and two sons, R. J. and E. W. LITTLE, Jr. of Falkland. Dr. VENERABLE, of Farmville conducted the funeral services, in the Falkland Presbyterian church, the burial taking place in the cemetery there at 11 o�clock Friday morning. The flowers were profuse and beautiful.

T. H. Bowen Dead

T. H. BOWEN, 62, died in the Beaver Dam section yesterday afternoon at 5 o�clock. Funeral services will be conducted from his late home Sunday afternoon at 2 o�clock by the Rev. W. B. NOBLES, of Winterville. Interment will be made in the Elks graveyard at Ballard�s Cross Roads. Mr. BOWEN came to Pitt county from Craven county 22 years ago and since that time had made the Beaver Dam section his home. He was a member of the St. Delight Free Will Baptist church near Armsville, Greene county. He is survived by his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Fannie BOWENS, of Greene county. He is also survived by seven sons and two daughters, Herbert, Jasper, Johnnie, Jessie, Tommie, Mack, Glenn, and Misses Fannie May and Mildred BOWEN. He is also survived by a brother, Stephen BOWEN of Greenville, and three sisters, Mrs. Luna CRAWFORD, Greenville, Mrs. Pearl GRIMSLEY, of Ayden, and Mrs. Minnie JOLLY, of Greene county.

Mrs. Robert Vainright Dead

Mrs. Robert VAINRIGHT died this morning at 2 o�clock, after an illness of several weeks, at her home two and a half miles from Greenville. She was a daughter of Mrs. Sarah PATRICK. She leaves a husband and two small children, a mother, two sisters and one brother. The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at the family burying ground near the home.

Winterville Items.....It is with much regret that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Sarah STOX, known as Mrs. Sallie NELSON, who died Thursday afternoon at 2 o�clock. She had been sick about two weeks previous to her death. Rev. T. H. KING, her pastor, conducted the funeral services at the Baptist church at 4:15 Friday afternoon, after which her remains were interred in the Byrd burying ground about one mile from town. She had been a consistent member of the Baptist church for about sixty years, being over seventy-seven years old at her death. The sorrowing ones have our heartfelt sympathy. She left one son, Mr. Robert NELSON, of Grifton, and one daughter, Mrs. Richard DAWSON, and several grand children to mourn their loss.

She was a consistent member of the Great Swamp Primitive Baptist church. She leaves a husband and four children, Messers. James L. and W. O. LITTLE, Mrs. Cornelius BARNHILL and Mrs. Frank THIGPEN, to mourn her loss. She had been a great sufferer for about 10 years but bore it with christian fortitude. A good woman has gone to reap her reward and the REFLECTOR extends deepest sympathies to the bereaved family. She was buried Monday evening at 5 o�clock at the family burying grounds.

He represented Pitt County in one session of the General Assembly and was once a member of the Board of County Commissioners.

Black Jack Items, Dec. 13.....Died on Friday morning, Nov. 15th, 1901; as the death angel was filling his mission by order of the great Creator, he called at the home of Lewis Henry WHITE, and took him from his loving family. He leaves a wife, eight children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss, but we feel that our loss is his eternal gain. He made a confession of his sins and was baptized on the 11th, and we believe that he is gone forever to be with him �Who doeth all things well.� He was born on the 14th of Feb., 1844, making his stay on this earth fifty seven years, nine months and one day. He had been in bad health for several years, and for the last sixteen months he suffered untold misery but in his last hours he rested perfectly easy and passed away without a struggle. His funeral was preached on the 16th by Elder W. H. LAUGHINGHOUSE, of Greenville, after which his remains were taken to the family burial ground near Ayden.

Bethel Items, Mar. 12.....Little Belle, daughter of Mr. J. L. PEAL, while playing out in the old mill yard last Tuesday evening, caught on fire. She ran to the dwelling house which was about one hundred yards, but was so badly burned before the flames could be extinguished she died that night. She was buried Wednesday evening. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. A. FORBES. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.

Mr. Jesse P. BROWN died at 4 o�clock Sunday afternoon at his residence on Pitt Street. The interment took place this morning in the Methodist cemetery, services being conducted by Rev. N. M. WATSON. The pall bearers were Messers. L. C. ARTHUR, James BROWN, J. B. JARVIS, G. E. HARRIS, Wiley BROWN and N. H. WHITFIELD. The deceased was born in Belvoir township, this county, Dec. 2nd, 1834, making him in his 65th year at the time of his death. He first began studying medicine in Greenville under Dr. W. M. B. BROWN and afterwards attended Richmond College from which he graduated in 1862. He also took a diploma in the University of New York in 1866. He was the first commissioned surgeon in the Army of Virginia. After the war Dr. BROWN returned to his native county and located in the neighborhood of his old home, and some years later moved to Greenville where he spent the remainder of his life. He united with the Methodist church here in 1894. He leaves a widow to survive him, his only child, Mrs. J. D. BULLOCK, of Oxford, having died a few weeks ago.

County Home, April 16......Lanie PHILLIPS an inmate of this home died suddenly today at 12:30. Lanie was a remarkable woman having been here 18 years and her health has been so perfect that it is said she never missed a meal in that time. She was of one of the best families in this county, the lamented ex-commissioner, Mr. Jesse SMITH being her uncle, and Rev. J. T. PHILLIPS being her cousin. Although idiotic she had the respect of all who knew her, was peaceable and harmless and will be greatly missed in this home. My family are sorely shocked at her untimely death. Winterville Items......It is with sadness that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Louisa COX, who had been sick with lagrippe for some days. She died Wednesday morning about 10 o�clock. The funeral was preached in the Baptist church Thursday afternoon, by Rev. T. H. KING, of Smithfield, after which the body was taken to the Cox grave yard, near Hancock church, and interred beside her husband, Mr. Abram COX. A large crowd was present to pay their last tribute of respect. She was about 78 years of age; a good neighbor, a loving sister and a loyal member of Winterville Baptist church. She leaves one brother, and several other relatives and friends to mourn her departure. We tender our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives.

We learn from the Greenville Express that Mrs. Fanny COBB, of Farmville, while at dinner at her house on Thursday the 12th inst., was laughing and talking with some lady friends who were dining with her, when suddenly becoming quiet her guests looked up and saw that she had, as they thought, fainted. Upon going to her she was found cold in death. Heart disease is supposed to have been the cause of her death. Mrs. COBB�S sudden demise adds to the gloom over the section which the recent violent deaths of Mr. ATKINSON and Mr. YOUNG had created. She was a good neighbor and an excellent lady and leaves a multitude of sorrowing friends to mourn her untimely death.

Dr. Richard Williams Dead

Dr. Richard WILLIAMS the oldest citizen of Greenville, died at his residence at 9:25 A.M., on Monday morning last and was buried yesterday afternoon in the Episcopal cemetery by the side of his lovely daughter who preceded him only a few months. The funeral services were conducted by the Rector of St. Paul�s Parish, Rev. Alban GREAVES, assisted by the Rev. Nathaniel HARDING of St. Peters, Washington. A large concourse of people were in attendance to testify their regard for the subject of this obituary and his esteemed family. Dr. WILLIAMS was born July 19th A.D. 1813, had he lived until the 19th of next month he would have been 81 years of age. He moved to Greenville just after the close of the war from his old home near Falkland, Pitt county, and so long as he was physically able took a lively interest in the well being of both town and county, having several times served both in a public capacity. He has been for 60 years a consistent member of the Episcopal Church and for a number of years was the only male member of St. Paul�s Parish. He leaves a widow and five children to mourn his loss. His remains were borne to their last resting place by the hands of the following pall-bearers: Messers. Wm. M. KING, Chas. SKINNER, R. M. STARKEY, J. B. CHERRY, H. HARDING and D. D. HASKETT.

W. D. Moore Dead

Died on Tuesday evening the remains of Mr. W. D. MOORE reached Greenville and were taken out to his former home, near Grindle creek, for interment. Mr. MOORE died in the State Hospital at Raleigh, where he had been an inmate for several months.

Bettie BARNHILL, 99, one of the oldest and most highly respected colored women of this community died at her home here last night at 10:54. Funeral services will be conducted from Sycamore Hill Baptist church, of which she was a devoted member, Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o�clock. She was born May 11, 1835, near Sheppard�s Mill, Pitt county. She moved to Greenville 39 years ago and had been active until last October. She had been confined to her bed since that time. She was the mother of Ferd BARNHILL, one of the best known colored men in the community.

He was married to the former Hattie SUMMERLIN and they had made their home in the Belvoir community since 1912. He was a member of Gum Swamp Free Will Baptist Church and a prominent farmer of the Belvoir section. Surviving are his wife; seven sons, W. H., Johnnie, Willie, and C. D. Mrs. Sophia Stocks Succumbs

Mrs. Sophia STOCKS, 87, died at her home in Swift Creek Township Wednesday morning at 6 o� clock following illness of ten days from pneumonia. Funeral services were conducted from her late home yesterday afternoon by Elder W. H. LAUGHINGHOUSE, and burial followed in the family burying ground near the home. The deceased is survived by a son, J. C. STOCKS; a sister, Laura STOCKS; five grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren. Mrs. STOCKS was a native of the Swift Creek community and died in the house in which she was born. She was one of the oldest members of the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church at Black Jack, and manifested much work in the progress of the denomination prior to her illness. She joined the church seventy years ago. She was of a lovable Christian character and was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends who received news of her death with great sorrow.

Burial was in the family cemetery plot near Winterville. Surviving are one son, W. L. STOCKS; two daughters, Mrs. Walter BUCK of Ayden and Mrs. W. A. SMITH of Winterville; 20 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Grandsons served as active pallbearers.

Funeral services will be conducted at Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o�clock by the Rev. C. L. PATRICK, Free Will Baptist minister of near Ayden, assisted by the Rev. Walter B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville and burial will be in the Stocks family cemetery near Chicod. The body will remain at the S. G. Wilkerson and Sons Funeral Home until an hour prior to the time of services, when it will be taken to the church. Mr. STOCKS was a lifelong resident of Pitt county and was a farmer. He was a member of Rose Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Herman EVERETT of Norfolk, Va.; Mrs. W. Z. LOFTIN of Chicod; and Mrs. Joe SMITH of Greenville; two sons, Heber STOCKS of Chicod and Herman STOCKS of Ayden; 29 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

He was married tto Eula DUDLEY of Pitt County in 1923 and spent most of his married life in the Clayroot community of Pitt County. For the past year he had been living in the Pactolus community. He was married to the former Eva STOKES of Craven County on May 20, 1901. Mr. CAUSEY was a member of the Riverside Christian Church. Surviving are his wife; eight daughters, Mrs. John CLARK of Greenville, Mrs. Chester BARBOUR of Smithfield, Mrs. Duff PORTER and Mrs. Collie OWENS, both of Portsmouth, Va., Mrs. J. H. Mr. James Kelly HEDGEPETH, 68, of Route 1, Farmville, died in a Goldsboro Hospital Monday night following an illness of 18 months. Mr. HEDGEPETH was a lifelong resident of Farmville, a member of the King�s Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church, a retired farmer and a member of the Red Men. He is survived by one daughter, Miss Edna Earle HEDGEPETH of the home; one son, Harvey HEDGEPETH of the home; one sister, Mrs. Jamie HEATH of Snow Hill; four brothers, C. D. and C. R. HEDGEPETH, both of RFD Kinston, Herman and Joe HEDGEPETH, both of Maury; three grandchildren. Funeral services are incomplete.

Mr. John Dixon Dead

Mr. John DIXON, an aged and highly respected citizen of Chicod township was found dead in his bed on Thursday morning of last week. He had been in usual health and his death was unexpected. The day before he had been to Washington and did not get back home until about 8 o�clock in the evening. About day break Thursday morning a servant went into his room to get instruction about some stock, and Mr. DIXON talked to him. Later when he did not come from his room to breakfast one of his family went to call him and found him dead.

Mr. J. B. PITTMAN of Falkland passed away Saturday at noon at the home of his son, Henry PITTMAN, in Falkland. He suffered a stroke of paralysis last Monday while at his son�s home and was unable to speak again up to the time of his death. The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at three o�clock in the Presbyterian church at Falkland, and were conducted by Rev. FLEMING of Pinetops, assisted by Rev. S. K. PHILLIPS, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city. The body was laid to rest in the Falkland cemetery. Mr. PITTMAN was a Christian gentleman of splendid character, and while the news of his death was received with sorrow by his many friends and relatives, this sorrow is made lighter by the thought that he has gone home to Him that heals all sorrow and pain. He was sixty-three years old, having been born in 1856, and was married three times. Mr. Henry PITTMAN of Falkland being the son of his first wife; Mrs. L. T. PIERCE of Falkland and R.. E. PITTMAN of Greenville and Dr. E. E. PITTMAN of Richmond are the children of his second wife. His third wife is still living and has no children.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ida H. GAY, 56, wife of Will G. GAY, were held from her late home near Walstonburg, Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o�clock, by Rev. M. A. WOODARD, of Winterville and Rev. J. C. MOYE, of Snow Hill, Free Will Baptist minister, and interment was made in the family burial ground near the home. Mrs. GAY had been a faithful member of the Howell Swamp Free Will Baptist Church for thirty-five years. In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ralph PARKER, of near Farmville, Miss Estelle GAY and four sons, Theodore, Melvin, Hubert and Harvey GAY, all of Walstonburg; a sister, Mrs. R. L. SPIKES, Farmville, and three brothers, W. R. and Emmett SHIRLEY of Walstonburg, and Arthur SHIRLEY, of Maury.

Funeral for Claudius F. BLAND

Greenville, June 28----Funeral services for Claudius Franklin BLAND, prominent Greenville resident who died at his home, 502 East Ninth Street Sunday as a result of an accident in Rocky Mount early in April, were conducted from Jarvis Memorial Methodist church Monday afternoon. The services were conducted by Dr. G. R. COMBS, pastor of the church, of which Mr. BLAND was a member. Following the funeral, the cortege left for Washington, N.C., former home of Mr. BLAND, where interment was made. The rites at the grave were conducted by Greenville and Washington Masons. Mr. BLAND died at 5:55 Sunday afternoon as a direct result of injuries he received on April 8, when he was installing an automobile lift at a filling station in Rocky Mount. He spent some time in Parkview Hospital in Rocky Mount, returning home three weeks prior to his death. After living in Conetoe a short time, he moved to Washington in 1900 and established the Harris Hardware Company, which he operated until 1916 when he moved to Hendersonville where he also operated a hardware store. He came back to this county some time later, moving to Farmville, thence to Greenville in 1933, where he has since made his home.

SPIVEY, a highly esteemed Greene county woman, died suddenly Saturday morning at an early hour, following a slight illness of several days, which had not caused her to be confined to her bed. Funeral services were conducted from the home near Farmville, Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o�clock, by Rev. Mr. CRITCHER, of Snow Hill, and Rev. Mr. PHILLIPS, of Hookerton, Methodist ministers. Interment was made in Forest Hill cemetery. Mrs. SPIVEY is survived by her husband, her father, P. L. CARR; four sisters, Mrs. J. R. JOYNER, Mrs. W. J. Mrs. Marshall HARDEE, 58, wife of Marshall HARDEE, died in her sleep at her home near Greenville early Saturday morning. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mrs. HARDEE, daughter of the late Willie and Louvenia Gold MCDANIEL, was born and reared in Clarksville, Va. and had lived in Pitt County for the past 44 years. She was first married to Claude BRAXTON on December 16, 1908 and he died in 1918. She was married to Marshall HARDEE July 25, 1923, and he survives. Also surviving are a son and two daughters by her first marriage, Willie BRAXTON, Mrs. F. O. NUNN and Mrs. Ester WILLIAMS, all of Greenville; two daughters and a son by her second marriage, Mrs. Jack STOKES of Ayden, and Mrs. J. C. MOORE and Earl HARDEE, both of the home; 7 grandchildren; five brothers, Jack MCDANIEL of Greenville, and Thomas, Willie, Johnny and Sam MCDANIEL, all of Henderson; and four sisters, Mrs. Frank NEWTON, Mrs. John DANIEL, Mrs. James OVERTON, and Miss Martha MCDANIEL, all of Henderson.

Triple Drowning in Tar River

On Sunday Allen FORBES and his son Charles, together with Henry ARNOLD, Charles BRAXTON and Louis ALLEN, all white, went to Bell�s seine beach, about three miles below town, on Tar river. Late in the afternoon the five men crossed the river in a canoe. Just before reaching land the boat took water and sank. Louis ALLEN and Charles BRAXTON swam ashore and saved themselves. Allen FORBES and Henry ARNOLD had also nearly reached a place of safety when they saw Charles ALLEN [FORBES], who was a cripple, struggling in the water and went to his aid. The three were drowned together. Tidings of the accident reached town some later and a messenger went out to the home of Mr. FORBES to advise his wife of it. When the messenger reached the home he found mourning already there, an eight months old child having died about the time the drowning occurred. All the bodies were found today.

Died suddenly at her residence in Pitt County, Friday, September 28th, between eleven and twelve o�clock, of heart disease, Mrs. A. P. wife of W. G. LANG Esq. Mrs. LANG was a daughter of Alfred and Orpah MOYE and was born in Pitt County January 12th, 1833, united with the Diciples Church in 1852 and was married January 8th, 1856. She leaves a husband and five children, two sons and three daughters. Her death was unexpected and is a great blow to relatives and friends. She was buried Sunday evening at the family burying ground, five miles below Marlboro, a very large assemblage of relatives and friends being present. Owing to the absence of the pastor of the church, with which she held her membership (Corinth), Rev. Redding MOORE, of the Methodist Church, conducted the burial services. Mrs. LANG was a sister to our townsman Elder Moses T. MOYE.

Mrs. Maggie A. HUDSON, aged 76, wife of John Allen HUDSON of Chicod township, died yesterday afternoon at four o�clock following a stroke of paralysis which occurred sometime ago. Funeral services were conducted at the home near Hudson�s Cross Roads this afternoon at 3 o� clock by Rev. Luther JOYNER and Rev. Jim COBURN. Mrs. HUDSON was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. Besides a husband, Mrs. HUDSON is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Marshall BUCK; three sons, W. A., L. A. and Dr. J. H. HUDSON; two brothers, Cas and Calvin EVANS. Burial was made at the family burying ground at the Hudson graveyard.

Mr. K. W. LANGLEY died at his home near Fountain on Tuesday morning from heart failure. He lived only ---- hours after he was stricken. He was 64 years of age and had lived at the present home since he was 9 years old. Mr. LANGLEY was a splendid old man, a grand neighbor and devoted husband and father. His wife predeceased him in death about nine years ago, and since her death he has centered his devotion on his children and grandchildren. Mr. LANGLEY is survived by three daughters, Mrs. W. H. LILLEY, Mrs. Cam SMITH and Mrs. Herbert LEWIS. Aklso a sister, Mrs. Van HARRIS, and two brothers, Messers Walter and John Thomas LANGLEY, all of Fountain township.

Jesse L. Smith Drowns

Information reached here early this morning that Mr. Jesse L. SMITH, a prominent farmer of Beaver Dam township, was drowned last night. The particulars as could be learned were that Mr. SMITH and one half dozen neighbors went to Bryant Creek Friday to set nets and camp out for the night. Sometime between one and two o�clock Mr. SMITH got up and left the camp while his companions were asleep. The first known of his leaving the camp was the others being awakened by hearing something fall heavily in the water and it was discovered that Mr. SMITH was missing and had in some way fallen into the creek. The body was found about half an hour after sun rise and was taken to his late home. Mr. SMITH was 52 years of age, a good citizen and a man generally liked by every one. He leaves a wife and nine children, and was a brother of Mr. J. S. SMITH of Greenville. The burial will be take place Sunday afternoon by the Masonic fraternity, he being a member of that order.

Mr. Joseph Peyton TUNSTALL, 91, of 104 Northwest Avenue, (North Shores), Washington, NC, passed away at his home on October 8, 2008 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late Phrocine Frisbee TUNSTALL of Belhaven, NC and Claude TUNSTALL of Greenville, NC. On August 10, 1943, he married Emily Bryan SQUIRES, who preceded him in death. Surviving are his son, Dr. Joseph P. TUNSTALL, Jr. and wife Judy, and his daughter, Martha GRAVELY and husband Steve, all of Washington, NC; grandchildren, Joseph P. TUNSTALL, III, Esq. and wife Hilaria of Tarboro, NC, Jenny TINKLEPAUGH and husband Eugene of Rocky Mount, NC, Abbott TUNSTALL and wife Hillary of Greenville, NC, Chuck GRAVELY and fianc� Tracy REEVES of Charlotte, NC, and Ross GRAVELY of Burlington, NC; and great-granddaughter Emily Bryan TINKLEPAUGH of Rocky Mount, NC. Joe was born on February 10, 1917 in Greenville, NC. At an early age he moved to Belhaven where he attended public school. In school he played football, basketball and baseball. Joe enjoyed his childhood in Belhaven and life on the Pungo and Pamlico rivers. From the age of nine, he always held one or two jobs. When he was eleven years old, he built a rowboat and at fourteen he built a 16 foot sailboat. He stayed on the river whenever he had the opportunity. In 1935, he graduated from Belhaven High School. With the money he saved in high school, a scholarship and the jobs he held, he worked his way through UNC- Chapel Hill. He was a charter member and president of the student branch of the NC Pharmaceutical Association and a member of the Phi Delta Chi Fraternity. At graduation, he received the Buxton Williams medal for campus citizenship and scholarship. In 1939, Joe graduated from the school of Pharmacy at UNC-Chapel Hill. He returned home to Belhaven to work at O�Neal�s Drug Store, where he worked in high school. From there, he moved to Washington and began his fifty-two years career with Tayloe Drug Company. In the field of pharmacy, he was a Charter Member and officer in the North Carolina Northeast Pharmacy Club. He was inducted in the prestigious North Carolina Academy of Pharmacy and served on the NC Pharmacy Foundation Board for needy students. He was elected to the statewide Executive Board of the NC Pharmacy Association. Joe was inducted into the Fifty Year Club of the Pharmacy Association and was elected to serve as permanent Secretary- Treasurer of the class of 1939. Joe loved and supported Washington and Beaufort County and devoted much time giving to it. He was on the committee that visited Florida prior to PCS Phosphate locating in Aurora. He was on the fundraising committee that made it possible to have ferry transportation to the phosphate plant. Joe was a charter member and Vice-President of the Washington Jaycees, Vice-President on the Washington Chamber of Commerce Board, an officer in the Washington Merchants Association, a member of the Local Housing Authority Board, a member of the United Way Board, the American Cancer Board, the American Heart Association Board and served many years on the Beaufort County Board of Health and the Salvation Army Board of Advisors. He was appointed several times to the First United Methodist church Board and was elected to two terms as Chairman. He served on the Beaufort County Community College Foundation Board. He served on the steering committee for county water, and served as Beaufort County Representative on the Five County Council on Aging. He was a member of the Friends of Brown Library, Pamlico Tar River Foundation, the Beaufort County Arts Council, Bath Historical Association and Washington Yacht and Country Club. Joe was a Red Cross driver for cancer patients. He served as a Sergeant in the North Carolina State Guard during WWII. He enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the John and Betty More Association, established in 1890, and the Frisbee Family Association. He was a member of the Ramblers Supper Club and a charter member of the Monday Night Poker Club for over 40 years. A funeral service will be on Friday, October 10, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church on West 2nd Street, with the Rev. Danny ALLEN officiating. She was also a member of the Pitt Family Researchers and of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She was the daughter of the late Thomas Ambler SPADY and Marion Elizabeth THOMPSON SPADY. She was married to Leslie T. BLAND, who preceded her in death June 13, 1997. She was a graduate of Aurora High School and attended Florida Keys Community College. She was the secretary for the family business from 1962-1976. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Ann BLAND BRYANT of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Marion S. STILLEY of Washington; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Christopher C. (Kit) Bland was Confederate Veteran and a Hero of Fort Fisher

(Special Correspondence). Greenville. Oct. 18th. Christopher C. (Kit) BLAND, a hero of Fort Fisher, ended his life at his home in Ayden Tuesday morning by shooting himself with a shotgun, blowing away a large part of his face and head. He suffered a severe attack of illness a few years ago from which he never fully recovered and was never himself since. He was 73 years old and leaves a widow and several children, among whom is Mr. Lee BLAND, a hotel man of much reputation running the Ricks at Rocky Mount and also proprietor of the Bland at Raleigh and several others. Mr. BLAND was raised on a farm. He enlisted in the war of 1861-5 in Company K, Thirty-sixth Regiment and was at Fort Fisher in the last fight. On the 24th day of December 1864 during a most heavy bombardment, the Fort Fisher garrison flag was shot away. To replace the flag was a dangerous and difficult task, but a call for a volunteer to replace it on its staff brought forward Private C. C. BLAND who amid shot and shell flying thick and fast around his, climbed the staff and tied the flag back to its pole with his necktie. When coming down, his attention was called to the flag which was flapping by one corner, he re-climbed to the top and tied it again, and safely descended though a shell passed so closely to his head that the air brushed his hair. Later he lost a leg and surrendered when the fort fell. Returning home, he became a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and later took up the ministry, in which he spent his best days only giving it up when his health failed. He had been a successful farmer, but of later years he lived in Ayden. Transcribed by Billy D. Bland

C. Frank BLAND, 78, of 935 Greenwood Drive, Hendersonville, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon in a local hospital. Mr. BLAND was a native of Beaufort County, a son of the late Claudius Franklin and Minnie C. GABRIEL BLAND, Sr. He had lived in Arlington, Va., prior to moving to Hendersonville in 1963 after 30 years service with the Department of the Navy as a marine engineer. He was a Navy veteran of World War-1. Surviving are his widow, Frances SWEENEY BLAND; a brother, R. Barnes BLAND of Farmville; and two sisters, Mrs. P. A. CABELL of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. R. R. Daniel R. Bland Meets Tragic End

Word reached New Bern Wednesday morning of the death Tuesday afternoon near Vanceboro of Daniel R. BLAND, prominent 54-year old farmer of that section, when a tractor he was driving turned over on him. He was a son of the late James L. BLAND who once was a member of the board of commissioners of Craven county. Coroner U. W. DAUGHERTY, investigating the accident, found that the Fordson tractor driven by Mr. BLAND was pulling a large disc harrow and that the harrow had a tendency to stall in soft spots in the field where stumps had recently been removed. The harrow had bogged down in one of those spots, and Mr. BLAND was endeavoring to make the tractor pull it out when the front wheels of the tractor left the ground and the tractor turned over backwards on him. Another worker in the same field heard the tractor choke down. Because of the trouble Mr. BLAND had been having, he looked in that direction to see the tractor in the air as it turned over backward. He didn't see Mr. Bland, but he ran to the tractor to find the driver pinned between the overturned tractor and the disc harrow. Apparently the steering wheel had crushed Mr. BLAND'S chest and he breathed only once or twice after he had been reached. Help was summoned at once, but fifteen or sixteen men were unable to free the driver. He was soaked about the waist with gasoline and oil, but the fact that the engine had choked as it turned over probably prevented a fire, says Coroner DAUGHTERTY. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of a Greenville mortician, and word concerning them had not arrived in New Bern Wednesday at Noon. Mr. BLAND, a resident of Vanceboro route one, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sallie SAWYER BLAND; a son, J. L. BLAND, who is in the Navy in the Pacific; and a daughter, Mrs. Armeta GODFROY of Cleveland, Ohio. Brothers are J. T. BLAND, R. H. BLAND and R. G. BLAND, all of Greenville; J. H. BLAND of Salisbury; J. F. BLAND of Winston-Salem; Sgt. D. C. BLAND of the United States Army and now stationed in Texas, and G. W. BLAND of Vanceboro. Dr. Del Mar Earl BLAND, 55, of 289 Canterbury Trail, passed away at Forsyth Memorial Hospital Thursday evening, after a brief illness. He was the son of James Frank and Beulah TILTON BLAND. Dr. BLAND was educated at Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, graduating in 1953. He had been in private practice in Winston-Salem since 1957, was Clinical Instructor at N.C. Baptist Hospital and was Attending Physician at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. Dr. BLAND served in the Army Medical Corps, and was a member of the American Medical Association, Forsyth Medical Society and Forsyth Country Club. Surviving are his wife, Maxine HUDSON BLAND of the home; one son, Michael David BLAND; two daughters, Miss Minxy and Miss Lisa BLAND, all of the home. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Edward A. and Margaret (SULLIVAN) TYLER, and lived in Worcester for 66 years before moving to Charlton where she spent the last 19 years. Miss Bland was a daughter of the late Theophilus and Mary SMITH BLAND of Pitt County, but she spent most of her life in Kinston. She was matron at Parrott Memorial Hospital for 25 years before her retirement some 17 years ago. She had been in ill health for several years. Her work as matron dated back through the influenza epidemic of the early 1920's. Surviving are a brother R. E. Born April 15, 1906, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., she was daughter of the late Charles Sedgewick COOLEY and Mabel HART COOLEY. She attended the public schools of Poughkeepsie and Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today at Harry and Bryant Chapel in the Oaks. Mrs. Fleta HAWKINS BLAND, 72, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, in Craven Regional Medical Center surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel with the Reverends Mike SCOTT and Neil COX officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. Fleta was a native of Craven County and raised in the Cove City community, until she was married, when she then lived in the Fort Barnwell community. She married Henry BLAND on December 3, 1949 and worked with the family farming and construction businesses. Mrs. BLAND was a member of Cove City Christian Church, Wintergreen Freewill Baptist Church and graduated salutatorian from Dover High School. She enjoyed collecting dolls, especially Barbies, antiques and other collectibles, and talking on the phone. Her Thursday night ceramic class was one of the highlights of her life until losing her vision to macular degeneration and glaucoma. She always looked forward to attending the Myrtle Beach Doll Show each year in March and any of her grandchildren's activities at school or church. Mrs. BLAND was also a founding member of the Fort Barnwell Fire and Rescue Departments. She labored in many fund-raising functions for community- oriented events. A loving mom, grandma, Miss Fleta, Aunt Fleta, or just plain Fleta will be greatly missed by all who knew her and those who came to her home to buy vegetables, eggs and pecans. Mrs. BLAND was preceded in death by her parents, Clinton and Stella HAWKINS, sister Jimmie HAWKINS and grandson Clint BLAND. MADISON-- Frances S. BLAND; age 90, died on Sunday, December 12, 1993, at a local nursing home. The former Frances SWEENEY was born in Campbellsport, Wisconsin, on August 24, 1903, the daughter of Michael and Anna PREHN SWEENEY. Frances graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1923 and from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in 1926. She was married in 1938 to C. Frank BLAND in Washington D.C. They lived there until his retirement in 1962, when they moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they lived until her husband died in 1979. She then moved to Madison. She is survived by two brothers, Dr. Walter SWEENEY of Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Leo SWEENEY of Madison; a sister, Evelyn OFSTIE of Madison; and many nieces and nephews. VANCEBORO - Funeral services for George W. Mr. Bland was born in Grifton, a son of the late James L. and Julia DIXON BLAND and had lived in the Epworth community since 1907. He was a member of the Epworth Methodist church, superintendent of the Sunday school for the past 40 years, and had served on the boards of stewards and trustees. He was also a member of the Vanceboro Masonic lodge, and the Camp Boys Hunting lodge at Havelock. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary HOLLOWELL BLAND; one son, Allen Baker BLAND of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Keith SAWYER of near the home, and Mrs. Robert C. VANCEBORO - Mr. G. S. (Pug) BLAND, 78, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998. The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in the Epworth United Methodist Church, Honolulu Road, Vanceboro. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Masonic Rites. Mr. BLAND, a native of Craven County, lived most of his life in the Epworth community. He served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was an active farmer and a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, the Vanceboro Masonic Lodge# 433, AF&M, and the Vanceboro Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by two wives, Nancy VALENTE BLAND, who died July 30, 1963 and Merlene WALL BLAND, who died April 21, 1987. Mrs. Grace Burrus BLAND, age 88, a resident of 426 Main Street, Edward,died Thursday, September 13, 2001 at Beaufort County Hospital In Washington. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 17, 2001 at Edward Christian Church in Edward with Rev. Stanley JONES officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. She taught elementary school at Cape Hatteras and Buxton. In 1930, Mrs. BLAND was awarded the title of �Miss Dare County�. She was a member of the Edward Christian Church. Mrs. Bland was active in the Eastern Star as long as health permitted. On December 23, 1937, she married Henry Ford BLAND, who survives. Surviving with her husband are two sons, Wiley BLAND and wife, Marilyn of Billings, Mont., Henry B. Lightning Bolt Kills Heber Bland At Barn Near Vanceboro

Heber BLAND, 21, of the Epworth section near Vanceboro was struck and killed by lightning Monday afternoon during the storm which caused so much damage in this section, while Ruby BLAND, 12, was severely burned. Glasgow BLAND, 12, a cousin, was knocked unconscious and another cousin, Shade BLAND, 19, was injured when he was knocked from the top of a tobacco barn near which the bolt struck. Heber Bland was lying on a pile of tobacco sticks at the side of barn during the storm, which seems to have skirted New Bern from Pollocksville, between the city and Greenville, through the Vanceboro section. The single terrific flash hit a transplanter near where BLAND was lying, destroying the tongue of the machine and leaping to the young man, who was instantly electrocuted. Ruby BLAND, a younger sister, received body burns and had her clothes burned. The group had been working at the barn when the sudden storm approached. It was reported that only a few minutes before the bolt struck BLAND had handed his eight month old baby to another at the barn. The others injured by the lightning were reported yesterday to be recovering nicely. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the home by Rev. T. E. DAVIS. Interment followed in the family cemetery plot. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Margaret KENT BLAND, and the eight month old infant; his parents; two sisters, Misses Ruby and Mary BLAND; and three brothers, Len, Matt and Hartley BLAND. Considerable damage was done to crops in the Epworth and Vanceboro sections. Hailstones and the driving rain destroyed seven acres of tobacco on the farm of R. E. CLEVE and several acres on the Warren farm. Damage to poles of the Tidewater Power company done by the storm in the Pollocksville section yesterday was estimated by C. L. CARTER, head of the company's branch here, at between $100 and $200. Three poles were on the road and one was broken off. New Bern suffered only lightly, bearing only the edge of the storm. The telephone company reported 30 phones in the city out of order and a few toll lines damaged. Lightning struck a radio in the home of C. GREEN, and completely destroyed it, but nothing else in the house was hurt by the bolt. Sections around Maysville and Trenton were lightly hit. Transcribed by Billy D. Bland

Burial will be in the Epworth cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the service. Mr. BLAND, 57, died at 8:45 a.m. yesterday at a local hospital. He had been ill for five days. He was born in Vanceboro on May 3, 1897, the son of James and Martha DIXON BLAND. Mr. BLAND came to Winston-Salem about 27 years ago, after serving in the Navy in World War I. He was a salesman here for Southern Insulation Company and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Epworth Methodist Church in Vanceboro. James L. BLAND, prominent resident and former Craven county commissioner, died at the Bland homeplace at Epworth at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He was 80 years old last February 4. Father of a large and prosperous family, Mr. BLAND was one of the county's most popular as well as prominent residents and farmers. He had been critically ill for the past week during which little hope was held for his recovery. Funeral services will be held from Epworth Methodist church, of which he was a devoted member, this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. Henry B. LEWIS, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. A native of Craven county, Mr. Bland resided at Epworth all his life. He was married three times, his first wife being Mrs. Julia DIXON BLAND of Craven County, and his second being Mrs. Martha HUDNELL BLAND of Beaufort county. VANCEBORO, NC - Funeral services were held at the Epworth Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock for J. T. BLAND, 64, a retired construction engineer who died at his home in Greenville Saturday. He had been critically ill for several weeks, following a longer period of ill health. Burial was in the Epworth church cemetery. A native of Vanceboro community, Mr. BLAND was a graduate of Whitsett institute near Greensboro. He became superintendent of the Washington Gas and Electric company in 1905 and manager of the Carolina Gas and Electric company in Kinston in 1924. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mabel BLAND; two sons, Joseph M. BLAND of Ashville and J. Death of an Infant

Epworth - Funeral services were conducted from the home here Monday afternoon for Joseph Allen BLAND, two day old infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow BLAND. The child passed away early Monday morning. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H. B. LEWIS, Vanceboro Methodist minister, and interment in the Epworth church cemetery followed. In addition to the parents, the child is survived by one brother, Jack BLAND; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Jennie BLAND of the home, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ava JONES of near Ayden. Joseph H. Bland Dies in Hospital

Joseph House BLAND, 61, of 300 Confederate Avenue, manager of the Salisbury district of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for a number of years and well known civic and church leader died last night in Rowan Memorial Hospital. Mr. BLAND succumbed at 9:10 o'clock following an illness of several months. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Friday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. R. A. ELLIS in charge. He will be assisted by Rev. Moultrie MOORE of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Following services here, interment will be in the Salem Cemetery in Winston-Salem. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Board of Deacons and Board of Trustees of the First Baptist Church, members of the Salisbury Rotary Club and employees of the Salisbury District of the Metropolitan Life Insurance company. The honorary pallbearers are asked to meet Friday at the church at 1:15 o'clock. Mr. BLAND was born in Craven County on September 12, 1887, son of James Lanier BLAND and Julia DIXON BLAND. He was married August 11, 1913, to the former Meta BISSETTE of Spring Hope, who survives. In 1909, Mr. BLAND joined the Metropolitan in Kinston and became manager of the Winston-Salem district when he opened it for the company in 1922. He remained in Winston-Salem until 1931 when he was transferred to New Orleans, La., as district manager. Mr. BLAND came to Salisbury in 1935 as district manager and had made his home here since that time. Mr. BLAND was a member of the Rotary Club, the Masonic order in Winston-Salem, was a active deacon of the First Baptist Church and a former member of the board of trustees. He was for five years president of the Metropolitan Veterans Association, a group with more than 25 years service with the company. In addition to his widow, Mr. BLAND is survived by a son, J. H. BLAND of Columbia, S.C., one grandchild Lillier Rebecca BLAND also of Columbia, one sister, Mrs. Henry HUFF of Washington, N.C. and the following brothers. G. W. BLAND of Vanceboro, J. Joseph House BLAND, Jr., of Charlotte, son of the late Joseph BLAND and Mita BISSETTE BLAND of Salisbury, NC, passed away on August 7, 2002 in Myrtle Beach, SC. He was born on May 4, 1924 in Winston Salem and graduated from Boyden High School and Georgia Military Academy. He attended the Citadel and the University of South Carolina. His studies were interrupted by WW-II when he served active duty aboard the USS Intrepid aircraft carrier in the Pacific. Mr. BLAND graduated with honors from the School of Interior Design in New York City in 1956. He was employed in an executive capacity with Bridges Furniture Company. He later worked as a sales representative throughout the Southeast and established BLAND Realty Company in Charlotte, NC. He was a member of Myers Park Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC, and later First Presbyterian Church, Boone, NC. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed his retirement at Little River, SC. Mr. BLAND is survived by his wife, Meredith BRIDGES BLAND of Little River, SC; daughter, Rebecca B. Cunningham of Columbia, SC; granddaughter, Colleen VOWLES of Columbia, SC; grandsons, Patrick J. MCSWEENEY of Candler, NC and Daniel B. MCSWEENEY of Kansas, City, MO; and great grandson, Kenneth VOWLES of Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Harry and Bryant Company, "Chapel in the Oaks", 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, with the Reverend Joseph D. ALDRICH, officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Leander Duke BLAND, 78, of 112 East Grainger Avenue died in a local hospital about 10 p.m. Thursday. He was a retired accountant and tobacconist, son of the late Richard E. and Louise Faulkner BLAND of Lenoir County, a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge Number 4-AF and AM and a member of York Rites Bodies, Sudan Temple of the Shrine in New Bern, Queen Street United Methodist Church. He attended Richmond Business College in Richmond, Va. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. from the chapel of Garner's Funeral Home. Rev. Harold LEATHERMAN, Methodist, will officiate. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery with Masonic rites. Surviving are his wife Mrs. Mildred Cox BLAND of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Willard ROUSE of Seven Springs Route 1 and Mrs. G. Robert HOUSE of Chesapeake, Virginia, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers, Harry and Beck BLAND, both of Kinston, one sister, Mrs. Norwood BIZZELL of Kinston. Death of Infant

Leander, year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Leander D. BLAND, residing near the city, died at 1 a.m. today. The parents are well known. For several weeks the baby suffered successively from pneumonia, measles and double pneumonia, surviving the first two despite a delicate constitution and the severity of the attacks. Mrs. Lemmie ALLEN BLAND, 70, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital Friday morning. Her residence was near Cherry Oaks, Greenville. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel by Elder Marvin E. GARNER and Elder Joe SAWYER. Burial will follow in Pinewood Memorial Park. Mrs. BLAND was a native and life- long resident of Greenville. She was a member of Great Swamp Primitive Baptist Church. She was first married to Arthur C. DAIL of Winterville who died in1936. EDWARD, NC: Funeral services for Mrs. Maude BLAND, 73, who died at her home Saturday night, were conducted from Edwards Christian church Monday at 2:30 p.m. by Rev. Rufus WALKER. Interment was in Oakhaven cemetery. Mrs. BLAND was born in the Edward community of Beaufort county, and she was married to John BLAND who died in 1959. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are two sons, Leslie T. BLAND of Key West, Fla., and Henry F. BLAND of Nags Head; one daughter, Mrs. Charlie L. GODLEY of Route 2, Aurora; one step-son, J. B. BLAND of Raleigh; one step-daughter, Mrs. Byron DICKENSHEETS of Milton, W. Va., and seven grand children. NOTE: Lenora Maude (TUTEN) BLAND was the second wife of John William BLAND. Leslie Bland is Victim of Auto Wreck

Leslie BLAND, 19 year old son of Herman BLAND, farmer of the Winterville community, was killed in an automobile accident on the___ ___ ___ ___ between Grifton and Ayden Sunday morning about three o'clock according to information reaching the city today. Coroner E. S. WILLIAMS investigated the accident Sunday morning and the jury returned a verdict that the young man came to his death while driving on the wrong side of the road. The accident happened at a cross roads between Grifton and Ayden. BLAND was going in the direction of Ayden and collided with an automobile occupied by J. O. CANADY and J. VANN both of the Ayden community. The Canady car, it seems, was towing another vehicle to town, and had stopped at the cross roads to turn around. It was while maneuvering the cars to go in the opposite direction that the BLAND car came along and ran into them. The BLAND car is said to have turned over two or three times, catching the driver under it. Young BLAND's head was crushed and his body cut by the impact. Mrs. Louisa FAULKNER BLAND, 87, died at her home on Liberty Hill near Kinston about 6 p.m. Sunday following a lengthy illness. She was a widow of R. E. BLAND and a member of the Queen Street Methodist Church. She was a daughter of the late Leander and Rebecca FAULKNER of Lenoir County. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday from Garner's Funeral Home with burial to follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Services will be conducted by her pastor, Rev. Mark LAWRENCE. She is survived by four sons, L. D., F. B., H. M., and R. W. BLAND, all of Kinston; one daughter, Mrs. M. W. BIZZELL of Kinston; six granddaughters, including Mrs. Willard ROUSE of Moss Hill whom she reared; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jessie WALLACE of Kinston. John Ben THOMPSON Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Memorial Park. She is survived by one son, Hartley BLAND, Jr. of Morganton; two daughters, Edith Ann RILEY and Rena REGISTER, both of New Bern; two sisters, Lena BELL and Marie JOYNER, both of Grantsboro; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
