Mrs. Inez Gaskins Smith Dead

ADA — Services for Inez Gaskins SMITH, 79, Ada, are 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Dr. George WARREN and Hicks SMITH III officiating. Burial follows at Rosedale Cemetery. Mrs.SMITH died Aug. 11, 2006, at a local assisted living facility. She was born Aug. 30, 1926, at Pitt County, N.C., to William Cleveland and Maud Manker GASKINS. She attended school at Grimesland, N.C., and moved to this area in 1946. She was a homemaker, a founding board member of Helping Hands Outreach Center, and was credited with starting Back-to-School-Basics, a community effort to purchase school supplies for kids in need. The project continues under the Ada Sunrise Rotary Club. She was also a board member of the Ada Community Theatre and Camp Fire, and a member of the Coffee Club started by the wives of husbands who were away serving in the military and which continued to be active for more than 50 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in youth groups and a long-time member of The Fellowship Class. She married Hicks A. SMITH Jr. April 14, 1944, at Greenville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Cleveland and Maud Manker GASKINS; brothers, Woodrow and Robert GASKINS; and sisters, Myrtle BUENACORE, Melissa HARRIS and Marie DEBRITO. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Hicks SMITH III, of the home; children, Nancy Moore and husband Wes, Allen, Texas, Lynn Snow and husband Jerry, Ada, Hicks A. SMITH III and wife Debbra, Tucson, Ariz., and Melissa Massie and husband Darrel, Duncan; grandchildren, Angie FISCHER, Trevor SNOW, both of Houston, Texas, Chad FISCHER, Ardmore, Derek MOORE and wife December, Napa, Calif., Avery SMITH IV and wife Amy, Tulsa, Lori SMITH, Tucson, Ariz., Lindsay SNOW, Ada, Josh BUTLER, Matt BUTLER, Chase MASSIE and Mitchel MASSIE, all of Duncan; great-grandchildren, Taylor FISCHER, Brady SNOW, Caty SNOW, Ashley SMITH, Jordan SMITH, Tyler SMITH, and Cage BUTLER; and two sisters, Louise AMATUZZO and Marjorie TAYLOR.

Weddington, NC- Mr. MANNING passed away at 51, March 20, 2008 unexpectedly, living his life to the fullest.
He was born in Pitt County, NC to the late Wesley Ward MANNING, Sr. and mother Betty Lou MANNING. A resident of Weddington for over 20 years, he was the founder of The MANNING Companies, Inc. and owner of La Paz Restaurant. He was an experienced pilot, an avid car enthusiast and a proud fan of the Charlotte Bobcats and Wilmington Sea Dawgs. He was a successful developer in both the Charlotte and Wilmington areas. He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of nearly thirty-four years, Laura MANNING and his children, son, Travis MANNING, his wife Melissa and their children Grace and Layla; daughter Talor, son Trey; son Trevor; and daughter Tate; son Worth Mitchell MANNING and his wife Tara of Stokesdale, NC. He has one sister, Vonnie GOURLEY. He had numerous cherished friendships in Charlotte and in the Wilmington area. He will be missed greatly and will forever be in our hearts. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 2:00 PM in Weddington United Methodist Church, 13901 Providence Rd., Weddington, NC 28104. The family visited with friends following the service in Helms Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the College Fund for Tate and Trevor MANNING, c/o Bank of Granite, P O Box 3249, Matthews, NC 28106.

E. T. CHRISTIAN, 69, former resident of Greenville, died at his home in Portsmouth, Va., Sunday morning at 6:30 o’clock from an illness of the past year. While living in Greenville he was married to Miss Lena HARRIS, daughter of Mrs. Mellie HARRIS of Greenville. They moved to Portsmouth 20 years ago. He was a member and deacon of the Court Street Baptist Church of Portsmouth and was held in high esteem. Funeral services were conducted from his late home in Portsmouth Monday at 12 o’clock by his pastor and funeral cortege left for Greenville where the remains were interred in Cherry Hill Cemetery at four o’clock. The grave services were in charge of Rev. T. M. GRANT, pastor of Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church. Mr. CHRISTIAN is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena HARRIS CHRISTIAN, one son, William CHRISTIAN; four sisters, Mrs. Bertha STEPHENSON, Portsmouth, Mrs. J. E. LEE, Portsmouth, Mrs. N. R. DENNIS, Norfolk, and Mrs. W. E. WEATHERLY of Churchland, Va. Also surviving is one grandchild.

Mrs. Eva JACKSON HEATH, 81, died at her home in Grifton Sunday morning at 4:30 after five years of illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel Monday afternoon at 2:30 and burial was in the Grifton Cemetery. The Rev. William M. EDGE, Christian Minister of Grifton, assisted by Rev. Wayne WEGWART, Methodist Minister of Grifton, conducted the services. Mrs. HEATH spent all her life in Pitt County and lived in Grifton for the past eighteen years, and was a member of the Grifton Methodist Church. Her husband John H. HEATH died in 1930. Surviving are four sons, Hugh HEATH of Grifton, Lee HEATH of Walstonburg, Howard HEATH of Raleigh and Chester HEATH of Orlando, Fla.; four daughters, Mrs. Letha GWALTNEY and Mrs. Ralph DIXON, Jr. of Grifton, Mrs. Cecil REDDICK of Greenville, and Mrs. J. E. BURDICK of Torrance, California; a grandson, Mac LANCASTER, a member of Jamesville High School faculty, who was reared by Mrs. HEATH, 13 other grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Pennie R. JOHNSTON, 73, died last night at 9:30 o’clock at her home about four miles from Greenville on the Pactolus road. She had been critically ill for a week. Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. T. M. GRANT, pastor of Jarvis Memorial Methodist church here. Interment followed in the family cemetery near the home. Mrs. JOHNSTON was born in Pitt county and spent her entire life here. She was the widow of the late Henry R. JOHNSTON. Surviving are five sons, J. S. JOHNSTON, A. J. JOHNSTON, W. L. JOHNSTON, J. C. JOHNSTON of Pitt County and W. H. JOHNSTON of Erwin, N.C.; three daughters, Mrs. C. G. BROUGHTON, Harnett county, Mrs. E. E. BAKER, Lake Worth, Fla., and Mrs. Carl HARPER of Pitt county.
Rites Held For Abram A. Joyner

Abram A. JOYNER, 76, one of the oldest and a highly esteemed citizen of Farmville, succumbed to a brief illness Sunday afternoon at 3:45 o’clock. Funeral services were conducted from his late home here on Monday at three o’clock by Rev. E. C. SOPER, pastor of the Bell Arthur Methodist Church, of which he had been a member since early manhood, and by Rev. R. A. CLARKE, of the Farmville Methodist Church. Interment was made beneath a large and handsome floral tribute. Favorite hymns were rendered by Mrs. M. V. JONES, Mrs. C. N. BOSTIC, Mrs. A. W. BOBBITT, Elbert C. and John D. HOLMES. Mr. JOYNER was the son of the late Abram and Mrs. Allie WILKES JOYNER, and the last member of his immediate family. A native of Pitt county and a well known planter of this section, he retired from active farming operations and moved to Farmville 12 years ago. Affiable and genial, Mr. JOYNER had a large circle of friends. He was a member of the Septuagenian Society. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna FORBES JOYNER; three daughters, Mrs. Arnold P. LEE, of Columbia, S.C., Mrs. L. L. MEWBORN, of Grifton, and Miss Bertha Rae JOYNER; three sons, Arthur F. JOYNER, Elbert A. JOYNER and Leonard L. JOYNER, and six grandchildren.

Mr. Eli RODGERS, 72, died at his home in Robersonville Thursday afternoon after suffering a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at the home Saturday afternoon at three o’clock by the Rev. J. M. PERRY, Christian minister of Robersonville. Members of the Stonewall Lodge No. 298, AF&AM, will render a Masonic service in the Robersonville cemetery. Mr. RODGERS son of the late Slade and Susan KEEL RODGERS, was born and reared in Pitt County and went to Robersonville in 1919 where he had lived since then. He was a member of the Robersonville Christian church. He was recently awarded a 50 year certificate for his service in masons. He had been a member of the Robersonville School Board. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alma JENKINS RODGERS; a son, Alton RODGERS of Robersonville; two daughters, Mrs. John MATTHEWS of Greensboro and Mrs. John WARREN of Robersonville; a step-sister, Mrs. Fannie PERKINS of Gold Point, and two grandchildren.
William Solomon Wiggins Dead

Mr. William Solomon WIGGINS, 61, died at his home near Vanceboro at three o’clock Thursday morning following a week of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at Juniper Chapel Free Will Baptist Church near Vanceboro Friday afternoon at three o’clock and burial will be in the churchyard. Mr. WIGGINS, son of the late Ned and Lucy JOYNER WIGGINS, was born and spent his entire life near Vanceboro, and was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Ella WIGGINS; two sons, William Arthur WIGGINS and Thomas Henry WIGGINS, both of the home; a daughter, Miss Bloomie WIGGINS of the home; a brother, Pete WIGGINS of Greenville; and three sisters, Mrs. W. M. MORRIS of near Vanceboro, Mrs. Linwood DUNN and Mrs. Henry COWARD, both of New Bern.
R. B. Parker Dead

Farmville and vicinity was saddened Monday evening, May 23rd, to learn of the death of Mr. R. B. PARKER at the home of his son, Mr. Cleveland PARKER. This was the final termination of a long life of usefulness, Mr. PARKER being seventy-four years old at his death. He has been ill for quite a while and when death touched him in the cool of this May evening it was no surprise to those of his loved ones who were with him at the parting. He was a conservative gentleman, never making a great demonstration of his opinions and beliefs, but sincere and earnest in everything he went about. Rev. CRISP, of Falkland, conducted the funeral rites at the family burying ground. The many attendants upon the funeral attested the loving esteem in which Mr. PARKER was held. He is survived by four sons, Messers. R. A. PARKER, Cleveland PARKER, Frank PARKER and William PARKER; two daughters, Mrs. Watt NEWTON and Mrs. W. B. HEARN, and one sister, Mrs. W. H. NICHOLS.
Lewis Thomas Wilson Dead

Lewis Thomas WILSON, 60, died at his home near Ayden at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon after suffering a stroke of paralysis early Tuesday morning. Funeral services were conducted at the home this afternoon at 3:30 by Rev. W. H. BRUNSON, Christian minister of Ayden. Burial will be in the Wilson family cemetery near Venter’s Crossroads. Mr. WILSON, son of the late Louis Henry and Martha WILSON, spent all his life in the Ayden community. Surviving are his wife, the former Cora Lee BUCK of Pitt County, and two sons, John Thomas WILSON and Bruce D. WILSON, both of the home.
Archibald Beddard Claimed By Death

Archibald BEDDARD, 81, died shortly after noon today at his home at the corner of Ninth and Cotanche streets after having been in declining health for several years. Mr. BEDDARD had been living in Greenville the past 15 years. His wife died the latter part of last summer. Surviving are two sons, --------BEDDARD ....[microfilm scratched].... Nathan BEDDARD of Ayden; two daughters, Mrs. J. R. ALLEN of Greenville and Mrs. H. C. SHAFER of Concord; one half-sister, Mrs. Martha BEDDARD of Washington, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Red Banks Primitive Baptist church, of which he was a member, tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock by Elder Luther JOYNER, Primitive Baptist pastor.

Mrs. Elsie Briley STOCKS, 64, widow of Nile S. STOCKS, died at Pitt General hospital at nine o’clock Saturday morning after two weeks of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons funeral home Sunday afternoon at three o’clock by the Rev. R. B. CRAWFORD, Free Will Baptist Minister of Greenville, and burial will be in the Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Cemetery. Mrs. STOCKS was born in Pitt county and spent most her life in the Reddy Branch community, coming to Greenville to make her home five years ago. Mr. STOCKS died in 1946. She was a member of the Greenville Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are five sons, Ormond J. STOCKS of the home, Leon STOCKS of Durham, Bonnie STOCKS, Doc Edgar STOCKS and Leo E. STOCKS, all of Greenville; three daughters, Mrs. Jack FUSSELL of Winterville, Mrs. Dixie SMITH of Greenville, and Mrs. Jack R. BISHOP of White Hall, Ill.; 26 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four half-brothers, Ola BRILEY, Vance BRILEY, Raymond BRILEY, all of Greenville and Joe BRILEY of Washington.
James Bryant Sutton Dies in New Mexico

News was received here today of the death of James Bryant (Bonnie) SUTTON, 66, of Helena, Montana. Mr. SUTTON was a native of Pitt County but left this section more than 30 years ago to make his home in the west. His death occurred last Saturday in Cameron, New Mexico, where he was visiting in the home of his son. Pitt County survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Edward W. SMITH and Mrs. J. J. JENKINS and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Clifton R. BRILEY, 48, died apparently of a heart attack about nine o’clock Thursday night. He was hunting in the woods near Staton’s Mills when he was stricken. Funeral services will be conducted at the Chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home Saturday afternoon at three o’clock by the Rev. C. D. PATTERSON, pastor of the Meadowbrook Presbyterian Church, and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Mr. BRILEY, son of the late Mack J. and Lula LEGGETT BRILEY, was born in Pitt County. He was a veteran of World War II, and for the past several years had been a salesman for Eastern Merchantile Co. He was a member of Parker’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. In 1947 he was married to Mrs. Alta SIMMONS JAMES, and she survives. Also surviving are three step-daughters: Mrs. C. H. JAMES of Bethel, Mrs. C. F. MacAndrew of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. William Frances TYSON of Stokes; four sisters, Mrs. Frank WHITAKER, Mrs. Brodie RADFORD, Miss Mae BRILEY and Mrs. Bennie COBURN, all of Greenville; 8 brothers, Johnnie BRILEY, Jeniss BRILEY, Eugene BRILEY, Edgar BRILEY, Lyman BRILEY and Leland BRILEY, all of Greenville; Earl BRILEY of Wilson and Dallas BRILEY of Ayden.

Joseph M. SIMPKINS, 65 of New Bern, Route 1, died [scratched microfilm]—day at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at the Spruill family burial ground three miles east of Vanceboro, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, by Rev. Duffy TOLAR, Free Will Baptist minister of Chocowinity, and interment will follow immediately afterward in the graveyard. Mr. SIMPKINS was a member of Macedonia Free Will Baptist church at Ernul. He was a farmer, and spent his entire life in Craven county. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ellen L. SIMPKINS; two daughters, Mrs. C. W. NOBLES of Ayden, and Mrs. D. P. POWERS of New Bern, Route 1; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at the home of a son, Leslie CONNIE, at Red Oak near Rocky Mount at three o’clock Friday afternoon by the Rev. Willie BRANTLEY, Holiness minister of Sharpsburg, and burial will be in Battleboro cemetery. Mr. CONNIE was born and reared in Beaufort County and had lived at Old Sparta and near Pactolus, and also recently at Leggetts. He is a member of Edgewood Free Will Baptist Church near Crisp. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Senie JONES CONNIE; five sons, Johnnie and Odie CONNIE, Jr. of Scotland Neck, Leslie CONNIE and Ellis CONNIE of Red Oak, and Hugh Lee CONNIE of Greenville; three daughters, Mrs. George Thomas WILLIAMS of Belvoir, Mrs. Joe JOHNSON of near Tarboro, and Mrs. Joe WEBB of near Scotland Neck; a brother, Swift CONNIE of near Pinetops; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah POLLARD of Belvoir and Mrs. Jack WESTBROOK of Kinston; and 29 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Amanda ALLEN SERMONS, 64, widow of W. A. SERMONS, who died at the home of her son, Bill SERMONS, 403 Student St. at 10 o’clock Sunday night following three months of illness, were conducted at the chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon at four o’clock by Elder S. B. DENNY, Primitive Baptist minister of Wilson, assisted by the Rev. R. B. CRAWFORD, pastor of the Greenville Free Will Baptist Church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. SERMONS, a native of Pitt County, spent most of her married life in the Red Banks community of Pitt County. She was married to Mr. SERMONS in 1906; he died in 1936. She was a member of the Greenville Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Murray SULLIVAN of Aulander, Mrs. Amos J. EVANS, Mrs. W. H. FORBES and Mrs. L. E. MANNING, all of Greenville; two sons, Bill and E. R. (Pete) SERMONS, both of Greenville; a sister, Mrs. N. T. STOKES of Norfolk, Va.; two brothers, J. T. ALLEN and J. R. ALLEN, both of Greenville; and 16 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Ann MOYE, who died early Wednesday morning at the home of her son-in-law, Jim FLAKE at Ayden, were conducted yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock at the home of her sister, Mrs. Catherine MCLAWHORN at Winterville. Burial followed in the Winterville cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. J. T. MOYE, Rev. R. F. PITTMAN and Rev. M. A. WOODARD. Mrs. MOYE, a 77 year old, was a member of a prominent family in this section. She was well known throughout the county and had a large number of friends. She is survived by nine daughters, Mrs. Allen FLAKE, Mrs. Jim FLAKE, Mrs. George HARRINGTON, Mrs. Jim NOBLES, Mrs. Walter BRAXTON, Mrs. Lester SUTTON, Mrs. Eva FLEMING, and Mrs. John BALDREE; five sons, Ed MOYE, Joe MOYE, Jeff MOYE, Bill MOYE and Meekin MOYE, and her sister, Mrs. MCLAWHORN.

Mrs. Carrie MANNING HOLLOWAY, age (?), widow of W. B. HOLLOWAY, died Monday afternoon at 1:08 o’clock at her home in Kinston after having been ill for several months. Funeral services were conducted from the home Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock by the Rev. Frank Julian, Jehovah’s Witness minister of Greenville, and burial was in the Hanrahan cemetery near Grifton. Mrs. HOLLOWAY was born and reared in Pitt county and had been living in Kinston for the past several years. She was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Surviving are six sons: Walter HOLLOWAY of Greenville, Owen HOLLOWAY, Julius HOLLOWAY, Edward HOLLOWAY, Jamie HOLLOWAY and Russell HOLLOWAY, all of Kinston; a daughter, Mrs. J. C. LUNDSTROM of Kinston; and two brothers, J. T. MANNING of Greenville and Lee MANNING of Kinston.

W. K. MCGOWAN, a prosperous farmer, who lived about three miles from town on the Pactolus road died Monday morning after a long illness with typhoid. He was unmarried. Two brothers survive him.

Funeral services were conducted this afternoon for Joe MCLAWHORN of Ayden, former sheriff of Pitt county, who died at his home last night following an illness of several months. The services were conducted by Rev. W. H. BRUNSON and burial followed in the Ayden cemetery. Mr. MCLAWHORN, the son of the late Jerry and Susie MCLAWHORN, was an extensive farmer and served as sheriff of the county for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy HARRINGTON MCLAWHORN; two daughters, Mrs. W. B. PHILLIPS and Mrs. H. J. JACKSON of Grifton; four sons, Kitchin MCLAWHORN of Greenville, Hubert MCLAWHORN, Asher MCLAWHORN, and Jack MCLAWHORN of Ayden.

Bethel News, July 2........Mrs. Mahala WHITEHURST died yesterday morning in Bethel. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church today at one o’clock by Rev. S. A. COTTON. She was interred at the family burying ground two miles from town.

Bethel News, July 2........Mrs. T. C. DAVENPORT died Tuesday morning near Dardens depot. Her remains were brought here on the A.&R. train yesterday morning and conveyed to the home of her father, W. R. FORD. Funeral services were held by S. A. COTTON, after which she was buried.
Allen Tucker Dead

Mr. Allen TUCKER, an aged citizen of this township, died on last Friday night. He was buried Sunday afternoon near the home of J. J. MAY with Masonic honors, he being a member of that ancient order. Mr. TUCKER was a veteran of the Mexican war, and was a worthy citizen. The attendance at his funeral was very large, showing that he was held in high esteem among the people of the county.

Ayden Items.....Mrs. Sallie GARRIS, wife of R. H. GARRIS, died Sunday morning after an illness of a few weeks. She suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she never recovered after a complication of diseases developed. She was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery adjacent to the church which her husband built himself after the death of her only son, Luther, a few years ago. Funeral services were held from their church, Luther Chapel, by Rev. J. R. TINGLE and we think it, in our judgment, as impressive as the writer ever heard.

Funeral services for Burton Green ALBRITTON, 71, will be conducted at the chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock. The Rev. Rashie KENNEDY, pastor of the Greenville Free Will Baptist Church, will conduct the services, and burial will be in the Thigpen family cemetery near Greenville. Mr. ALBRITTON died at his home at Pamlico Beach early Sunday morning. ALBRITTON, a native of Pitt County, was married to Miss Sallie Elizabeth KEEL of Pitt County in 1903, and came to Greenville as a rural mail carrier in 1909, and retired in 1942. Mrs. ALBRITTON’S death occurred in 1926. After his retirement he went to live at Pamlico Beach. He was a member of Withlacoochee Tribe, No. 35, Improved Order of Red Men of Greenville. Surviving are a son, James Burton ALBRITTON of Greenville; two daughters, Mrs. C. B. THOMPDSON of New Bern, and Mrs. Eddie BOETZMEYER of Miami, Fla.; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

He is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Victoria CARR, and the following sons and daughters, all by his first wife, who was Miss Usula BARROW of Greene county before her marriage; J. F. Mrs. Lizzie Ann DANIEL, wife of John L. DANIEL, died Friday night a little past 9 o’clock, after a lingering illness. Mrs. DANIEL was born Aug. 8th, 1838, making her a little past 68 years of age at the time of her death. She was married 46 years ago and is survived by her husband and three daughters---Mrs. Maggie HAMMOND, Mrs. J. L. BARNHILL and Miss Louie DANIEL. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. A. HORNADAY at 4 o’clock this afternoon in the Methodist church, of which Mrs. DANIEL was a faithful member. The interment was in Cherry Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Huldah Harris Dies At Suffolk, Va.

News has just been received here of the death of Mrs. Hulda HARRIS, wife of J. F. HARRIS, who died March 8th at her country home near Suffolk, Va. She had been sick only a few hours, and her death came as a distinct shock to her family and friends. Mrs. HARRIS was the daughter of the late Edward H. DUDLEY. She was born in Paudah, Ky., May 10, 1878. She came to Greenville with her parents when quite young, and was a resident of the county for a number of years. She was married to Joseph Fenner HARRIS in 1897. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church at Parker’s Chapel, a few miles from Greenville. Mrs. HARRIS was a woman of sterling character and was loved by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband and eight children: Mrs. Annie Lee MANNING? of Durham; Sudie, Martha and Nell and Herman HARRIS of Norfolk; Edward, Joseph and Charles HARRIS of Suffolk. The deceased was buried in Bethlehem cemetery near the home.
John Hudson of Shelmerdine Accidently Shot Self

Johnnie HUDSON, aged thirty-two, of Shelmerdine, this county, accidently shot himself last Tuesday afternoon with a shot gun and died in a hospital at Washington Wednesday night at eleven o’clock. Mr. HUDSON had been out hunting and while on his way home stopped at a negro’s house and in sitting his gun down on the porch it fell through in a hole. In falling the hammer struck a sill under the porch and fired and the entire load of No. 6 shot entered the body of HUDSON near the groin and stomach. He was taken immediately to the hospital in Washington where he died. Mr. HUDSON was a farmer and married with a wife and three children.

Mrs. Martha JONES died June 20 after an illness of about 6 weeks, supposed to be brights disease and brain trouble. Mrs. JONES was 79 years old. She was the daughter of Sylvester TAYLOR of Pitt county. She married the late Dan JONES who died about 10 years ago. Since that time Mrs. JONES made her home with her son, R. D. JONES. She leaves four sons, J. F. JONES, M. G. JONES, W. L. JONES, R. D. JONES, and J. T. JONES and two daughters, Martha J. BENNETT and Mrs. Emma REDDICK. She leaves 48 grand children and 26 great grand children. Mrs. JONES was called a good woman by all who knew her and she was a faithful member of the Methodist church for many years. The interment was made at the Holly Spring graveyard at the Short place Thursday afternoon. The funeral was conducted by M. R. CHAMBERS, her pastor, assisted by A. J. MANNING.
Elder G. W. Stokes Died Last Night

Elder G. W. STOKES, aged 59 years, died at his home near this city last night after a three weeks’ illness from sleeping sickness. The interment will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 in the family burying ground at Hardee STOKES. Elder STOKES was the one of the county’s most beloved citizens having been a Primitive Baptist preacher for over 17 years. He will be greatly missed in his community and throughout the county where is held in high esteem. The deceased is survived by his aged mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. STOKES, his wife, seven children, Mrs. Clarence CARRAWAY, Mrs. Dalton JONES, Messers. William Jennings, Oscar, Leland and Kitchin STOKES, five brothers, Messers. J. M., J. F., N. T., J. T., H. M. STOKES, and one sister, Mrs. S. A. BRIGHT.

He had suffered a stroke of paralysis several weeks ago and his death on Wednesday morning was not unexpected. Mr. BURNETTE was born and reared in Pitt County, but had lived in the neighboring county of Greene for the past 40 years. He was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church, Marlboro, and the Farmville Septuagenarian Society. Surviving are his wife, formerly Miss Mary T. MOORE; two daughters, Mrs. W. Following an illness of several months, Mr. Stephen HOLLOMAN, age 73, very quietly passed away on last Sunday night at 9:30. He was very much loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed by all friends and relatives. Funeral services were conducted in the home Monday afternoon at two o’clock by Rev. B. B. SLAUGHTER, of the Methodist church in Farmville, after which the remains were taken in charge by the Masons, of which order he was a faithful and loyal member, and was taken to the Farmville cemetery for burial. Besides his wife ten children survive as follows: Mesdames G. E. ALLEN, W. C. MOORE, and E. L. RUSSEL, Misses Louise and Nellie HOLLOMAN, and Messers. Albert, Ray, Jarvis, Arthur and David HOLLOMAN.

Mrs. Kate Harris HEATH, 86, widow of James HEATH, died at the home of her son, Blaney HEATH, Tuesday morning, following a stroke suffered several weeks before. Mrs. HEATH had lived in Pitt county up until a few years ago, when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. J. B. VANDIFORD, in Greene county. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. B. MASHBURN, pastor of the Christian church, at the home of Blaney HEATH, at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon and the interment was in Forest Hill cemetery. Active pall bearers were her grandsons and floral bearers were granddaughters. Surviving are her children: five daughters and three sons, as follows: Mrs. J. B. Greenville, July 1st.----After a lingering illness Mrs. R. L. SMITH passed away at her home near here yesterday afternoon at 2:05 o’clock in the fifty first year of her age. The deceased was a native of Greene county and a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. TURNAGE. She was united in marriage to R. L. SMITH, February 25th 1886. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Farmville where they resided for a few years, later on, moving to this city, which has been their home for the past twenty years. The deceased is survived by her husband, son, W. H. SMITH and two daughters, Mrs. C. R. TOWNSEND of Farmville and Mrs. L. G. COOPER of this city. The funeral took place from the residence on Evans street this afternoon at 6 o’clock and the interment made in Cherry Hill cemetery. The services were conducted by the Rev. W. P. SHAMHART, pastor of the Christian Church.

W. A. STOCKS, well known Pitt county farmer, died at his home in Chicod township this morning at 7 o’clock following illness of one year. Mr. STOCKS was one of the best known growers of his community and spent all of his life in this section. He was member of Pleasant Hill Free Will Baptist church and evidenced much interest in the work of the denomination until illness prevented active service. He is survived by his wife and ten children: Gladys, Wilbur, Leroy, Blanch, Dorothy May, Athelene, Bernice, Mack, Mary and William STOCKS; his Mother, Mrs. Rebecca STOCKS, of Greene county, and three brothers, O. Mrs. EDWARDS was well known in the Falkland community and news of her death was received with sorrow by a wide circle of friends.

James Redmond DEANS, 58, died at 3 o’clock this morning at his home in the Falkland community as a result of heart trouble with which he suffered over a period of three months. Funeral services will be held from the late home Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock and burial will be made in the Moore graveyard near Fountain. Mr. DEANS moved to Pitt County from Wilson County about twenty years ago, and since that time had been engaged in farming. He was held in high esteem throughout the community. He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. R. S. HARRIS, Mrs. J. C. DEAL, Mrs. Ira L. HARRELL and Sarah Louise DEANS, five sons, Johnnie, Otis, Jimmie, David and Bartley DEANS. Mrs. CASE, who was well known and highly esteemed here, having been a resident of Farmville many years before going recently to make her home with the Rev. Mr. and Mrs. NEWTON, was the daughter of the late Edwin G. and Mrs. Emily JOYNER CASE, and the widow of the late G. A. CASE, of Greene county. Mrs. Martha Frances DALE, 85, widow of the late B. L. DALE, one of Farmville’s oldest citizens, and highly esteemed in the community, died at her home early Saturday morning after being in a state of declining health for several months. She had been a member of the Free Will Baptist church for more than 60 years, and funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by ministers of that faith, the Rev. J. W. ALFORD, of Kenly, and the Rev. M. A. WOODARD, of Winterville. Burial was made in the family cemetery in Greene County, with her nephews, Moses Mac Earl and Joe JONES, E. Bruce, B. Edwin and J. Paul DALE. Surviving Mrs. DALE are two daughters, Mrs. W. E. WATERS, of Rocky Mount, and Miss Alice DALE, of Farmville; a son, B. T. DALE, of Snow Hill, and two sisters, Mrs. Emma F. Peyton P. ATKINSON, native of Pitt County and 59 year-old Spanish American War veteran, died in a Veterans hospital at Hampton, Va., Wednesday morning following an illness which lasted several years. He had also spent some time in Oteen Veterans Hospital. Funeral Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock, at his home near Farmville and burial was in the family cemetery near the home. C. HOLMES and C. F. BAUCOM. Interment was made in Forest Hill cemetery. Mr. CARR died Thursday morning at nine o’clock, as a result of a stroke of apoplexy, at the home of his son, Dr. M. L. CARR, in LaGrange. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. James SCHMUS, of Norfolk, Va., a son, Dr. M. L. CARR, LaGrange, and a brother, P. L. CARR, of Greene county.

Jonas Stanley WARREN, 78, a former resident of Farmville, died early Saturday at the home of his son, J. D. WARREN, in Washington, after an illness of two weeks duration. A brief funeral service was held at the WARREN home in Washington, Saturday afternoon, by Rev. Sidney MATTHEWS, Episcopal minister, and the Rev. J. R. EVERETT, of the Baptist church. Services were held here later in the afternoon, by the Rev. Mr. MATTHEWS, assisted by Rev. C. B. MASHBURN, Christian minister. Interment was made in Forest Hill cemetery. Mr. WARREN is survived by his second wife, formerly Miss Elizabeth PADLEY, a daughter, Mrs. J. F. TEEL, of Wilson, and two sons, W. S. WARREN, of Fountain and J. L. WARREN, Washington, and a sister, Mrs. H. C. WAINRIGHT, Farmville.

Thursday evening telegrams were received here stating Miss Jackie MOORE, who formerly lived in Greenville, but recently in Whitakers, died Thursday in a hospital in Richmond, where she went some time ago for an operation. She was recovering from the operation when she contracted pneumonia, which proved fatal. Miss MOORE was well known throughout Pitt county and her many friends regret to learn of her death. She had just past her fiftieth year. She was a sister of Mrs. B. H. HEARNE, of Greenville; Mrs. David HYMAN, of Stokes; Mrs. Joseph FLEMING, of Pactolus; Messers Guilford and L. C. MOORE, of Stokes; Misses Malissa and Ellen MOORE and Messers G. C. and Zeno MOORE, of Whitakers, to whom we extend sympathy. The funeral took place at Whitakers Friday afternoon.

Mr. Robert TURNAGE, aged 76 years, died at his daughter’s, Mrs. Martha JOYNER, Wednesday night at 10 o’clock. Mr. TURNAGE was one of Pitt County’s oldest citizens. He leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. He had a large family of children, many of whom are still living. G. L., Henry C., and A. P. TURNAGE are his sons; Mrs. Martha JOYNER, Mrs. Sarah SHEPPARD, Mrs. Selecta MOORE, Mrs. Dicey GAINOR and Mrs. Julia FIELDS are his daughters. Those who knew him best loved him most. His was a quiet, consistent pilgrimage through life and his highest aim was to do unto others as he would have them do unto him. Twenty years ago he witnessed the death of his wife, whom he laid away in the family graveyard where his remains were interred this evening.

Mr. James WHICHARD, an aged and highly esteemed citizen of this county, died Thursday, 15th, at his home eight miles from Greenville. He had passed beyond the allotted three score and ten years, and the last few years of his life he was confined to his bed a greater portion of the time. He was an excellent man, quiet and unpretentious in his manner, devoted to his home and family, and a faithfully friend. He was as honest as the days are long, a plain and industrious farmer, and was one of the few men in the county who lived by strict attention to his business that something of this world’s goods can be accumulated by following the plow.

James Alonza Forrest, 65 died last night at 11:45 o’clock at his home, 112 West Twelfth street. He had been in declining health for the past two years, his condition becoming critical only two weeks ago. Funeral services will be held from the late home tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock by Rev. T. M. GRANT, pastor of Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church, due to the absence of his pastor, Rev. W. A. RYAN. Interment will follow in the family cemetery near Scuffleton, Green county. Mr. FORREST retired from active work three years ago with Garris Evans Lumber Co. He had been employed there for 13years. He was born in Greene county October 12, 1871, son of the late Jesse Thomas and Mary PHILLIPS FORREST. He moved to Greenville in 1916 and had made his home here since. Mr. FORREST was a faithful member of Eighth Street Christian church here. Surviving are his wife, who before her marriage was Anice B. SPARKS, and four sons, J. G. FORREST, V. M. FORREST, A. E. FORREST, and James Thomas FORREST, all of Greenville; three daughters, Mrs. B. R. PEED, Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Jesse S. FORBES, Washington, and Mrs. L. B. WORTHINGTON, Winterville; also one brother, D. R. FORREST, of the old home in Greene county; and two sisters, Mrs. C. B. SIMMONS, Kinston, and Mrs. S. A. HUMBLE, Greenville; ten grandchildren and 28 nieces and nephews.

Robert SMITH, 76, of Greene county near Scuffleton, died this morning at the home of his son, J. C. SMITH, with whom he had been living for two months. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of his son, by Rev. M. A. WOODARD, Free Will Baptist minister of Winterville. Burial will follow in the Winterville cemetery. Mr. SMITH is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rebecca SMITH; five sons, J. L. SMITH, of Scuffleton, M. Z. SMITH, of near Rountree’s church, R. E. SMITH of Winterville, W. K. SMITH of Greenville, and J. A. SMITH of Scuffleton; two daughters, Mrs. J. D. VICK of Bethel and Mrs. J. L. SAVAGE of Greenville; two brothers, Danieel SMITH of Scuffleton and Furney SMITH of Lenoir county; three sisters, Mrs. W. L. MCLAWHORN of Ayden, and Mrs. J. P. LONG of Bolton, and seventeen grandchildren. Mr. SMITH spent most of his life in the Winterville community. He was a farmer until forced to retire several years ago. Since then he had made his home with his sons, J. C., R. E. and W. L. SMITH. He was a member of Elm Grove Free Will Baptist church of this county.

Mrs. Rebecca Ann SPEIGHT, 90, died this morning at 5:25 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jack WILLIAMS, near Greenville. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home of Mrs. WILLIAMS by the Rev. J. C. SPIVEY, pastor of the Pentecostal Holiness church of Greenville. Burial will be in the Henry Allen family cemetery. Besides Mrs. Williams with whom she made her home, surviving are two sons, J. L. SPEIGHT and C. O. SPEIGHT of near Greenville; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Mrs. SPEIGHT was born in Pamlico county on Oct. 8, 1849, and was familiar with many Civil war activities around New Bern. She married Alex SPEIGHT of Pamlico county 65 years ago and shortly thereafter they moved to Pitt County.
Offie Dail Passes at Son’s Home

Offie DAIL died at the home of his son, Arthur DAIL, here Saturday night at 8 o’clock. Mr. DAIL was 70 years old and had been in ill health for several weeks prior to his death. Mr. DAIL was a native of Leens, Pitt County, but worked here several years ago when the hosiery mill was in operation. When the mill closed he returned to his original home but returned here two years ago to live with his son. The deceased was well known by the elderly people of the town and he was well-liked and respected by everyone who knew him. He was of an unpretentious nature and humble in his dealings with his neighbors and friends. The funeral services were conducted here Monday afternoon by Rev. E. C. SHOE at the late home. He was assisted by Rev. FITTS of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Winterville cemetery. Mr. DAIL was a member of the Missionary Baptist church. Mr. DAIL was first married to Julie SERMONS of Pitt County. His second marriage was to Miss Percie, also of Pitt County. The following children survive: J. B. DAIL, of Durham, Mrs. Perlie STOKES, of Winterville; Mrs. Nina JONES, of Parmele; Mrs. Emma HASTEY, of Roanoke Rapids; J. J. DAIL, of Bethel; Mrs. Nacy EDMONDS, of Everetts; Mrs. Betty HUTCHINSON, of Robersonville and Arthur DAIL of Robersonville.

Mr. BROWN was a member of a large family, but is survived by only one brother, Mr. Henry BROWN, of this town, who is now 86 years old.
James Thomas Dies at Home of Sister

James THOMAS, 49 years old, died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Minnie WHITLEY, on the Hamilton road, near Williamston, last Saturday morning at 10 o’clock. He had been in ill health for some time, death being attributed to a complication of ailments. Taken with influenza last February, he had been confined to his bed since that time. The son of the late James and Crissie THOMAS, he was born in Greenville. When seven years old, he came to this county and spent a greater part of his life in and around Williamston. For 15 years he lived in the Robersonville community where he farmed. He married twice and leaves beside his sister, Mrs. W. R. WHITLEY, two children, Henry and Emma Thomas, both of this county. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Whitley home by Rev. J. M. PERRY, local minister, and Rev. R. R. GRANT. Burial followed in the Daniel Cemetery in Williams Township.
Mrs. Biggs Cox Dies at Home

Mrs. Biggs COX, highly respected and greatly beloved woman of the Hassell section, died at her home there last Friday afternoon following an illness of two weeks. She had been in failing health for several months, but was able to be up and visit her children until about two weeks ago, when she was forced to her bed. The daughter of the late Thomas and Mima HART, prominent family of Pitt County, Mrs. COX was born near Ayden 67 years ago, where she grew up and married while a young woman. When 13 years old, she joined the Christian church in Ayden, and was a loyal member of that faith until her death, or for more than half a century. In the latter part of 1915 she moved with her family to this county and made her home near Hassell, where she was soon recognized as a good neighbor and loyal friend, a good woman who found peace and joy in her kindly acts for others. Although she reared a large family of her own, she found time to help others and to hold her home open to the needy. Eleven children, all of whom are now living, were born to the union, and in addition to caring for and rearing her own children, she adopted a niece, Miss Louise COX, now of Speed, and took her into the home as one of her own children. Mr. COX died about three years ago, and she was the last member of the immediate Hart family. The names of the children are Mrs. Zylphia MCLAWHORN and Mrs. Zula MCLAWHORN, both of Ayden; Mrs. Zadie CANNON, of Kenansville; Mrs. Zenobia HAISLIP, wife of County Commissioner R. A. HAISLIP; Messers. Zadock COX, of Speed; Zeber COX , of Macclesfield; George COX, of Winterville; Rev. Thad COX, of West Point, Va.; Lee and Desmond COX, of Hassell; and Gaston COX, of Ayden. Funeral services were conducted at the late home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. C. B. MARSHBURN, of Farmville, a former pastor of the family. Interment was in the family plot in the Ayden cemetery.
J. K. Ross Dies After Long Illness

J. K. ROSS, one of this section’s oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his home here early last Friday morning following a long period of declining health. He was confined to his bed for more than two weeks before his death, his conditions being critical during most of that time. Infirmities of age and complications contributed to his death. Mr. ROSS was the son of the late J. R. and Margaret E. ROSS, members of prominent Pitt County families. They moved to this county soon after their marriage many years ago and settled here. Mr. ROSS was born 78 years ago. For a long number of years he was engaged in the Merchantile business here, but for some time prior to his death he devoted his time to farming. Despite his advanced age, he was unusually active until his health began to fail him several months ago. Although not a member of any church, he attended the Primitive Baptist services regularly, contributing freely and doing much work of a religious nature. He was widely and favorable known and held the high esteem of neighbors and numerous other friends throughout this section. Mrs. ROSS with one son, Hugh ROSS, of Philadelphia, survives. He also leaves one brother, Mr. J. C. ROSS, the last of a family of eight children. Funeral services were conducted at the late home last Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by Elder FITTS, of the Methodist church here. Interment was in the Whitfield cemetery, near here.
Death of Mrs. J. H. Roberson, Jr. Brings Sorrow

Funeral services were held in the local Missionary Baptist church here last Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock for Mrs. J. H. ROBERSON, Jr., one of this section’s most highly esteemed and greatly beloved citizens. The end came peacefully at her home on Main Street about midnight Thursday, following an illness of nearly eight weeks, during the early part of which she suffered an attack of influenza and later pneumonia and complications developed to cause death. Rev. E. C. SHOE, her pastor, conducted the last rites, assisted by Rev. James M. PERRY, pastor of the local Christian church. Interment was in the New Cemetery here. Mrs. Verna LITTLE ROBERSON, 59 years old was born in Pitt County, the daughter of the late I. H . and Della GAINOR LITTLE, prominent family of that section. Thirty-seven years ago, she married Mr. J. H. ROBERSON, Jr., marking the beginning of a useful life for this, her adopted town. In the home she was an understanding companion, a thoughtful mother, and in her every walk of life a true Christian ideal was ever present. She was at home with all classes, including the section’s very poor people. She willingly administered to the sick and needy, and in her life and deeds all people found a worthy example to follow. In the advancement of the religious and civic interests of this community, she always rendered a valuable aid and was an active member of the local Baptist church for many years. Mrs. ROBERSON’S passing brought sadness to the hearts of many whom she had befriended time after time as well at to those with whom she came in contact daily, and the high 4steem in which she was held was exemplified in the extensive floral offering and the large number attending the last rites to pay mute tribute to her memory. Besides her husband she is survived by three children, Mrs. Geo. L. MADRE, of Windsor; and Vance L. ROBERSON and Miss Della ROBERSON, of Robersonville. She also leaves three brothers and sisters, Mr. G. L. LITTLE, of Elizabeth City; Mr. W. J. LITTLE and Mrs. N. C. EVERETT, of Robersonville, and six grandchildren.

Funeral services for W. K. WOOLARD, 78 year old prominent Stokes citizen, who died last Friday night, were conducted from the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment was made in the burying ground near the home. Services were conducted by Rev. Warren DAVIS, of Washington, a former pastor and Rev. Mr. HUDSON, of Roanoke Rapids, present pastor of the deceased. Mr. WOOLARD, prominent and large land owner of the Stokes community, was a charter member of the Oak Grove Christian church. He had been a member of that church for approximately 60 years and was the oldest living member of the church. He served on the board of deacons for a number of years and took an active part in all affairs of the community and was highly respected by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Minnie Gertrude WOOLARD; one son, J. H. WOOLARD, of Greenville; three daughters, Mrs. W. T. WARREN and Mrs. J. A. CRANDELL, of Stokes, and Mrs. Brown HARDISON, of Aurora.
Miss Eliza Nelson Dies Near Hassell

Miss Eliza NELSON died Sunday afternoon at the home of her brother, J. C. M. NELSON, near Hassell, following a stroke of paralysis. Miss NELSON was born in Pitt County 61 years ago and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse NELSON, well known resident of that section. After the death of her parents some years ago she moved to this county and made her home with her brother since that time. She was known as a devout Christian. Miss NELSON had been a member of the Conoho Primitive Baptist church for a number of years. The funeral service was held at 4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the home of her brother, and interment followed in the family burying ground in the community. She is survived by three brothers: J. M. C. NELSON, Jim NELSON and Walter NELSON; and two sisters, Miss Eunice NELSON and Mrs. Alice TRIPP; all of whom reside in the upper section of this county.

Three sisters, Mrs. Will BAILEY, Mrs. James BRILEY and Mrs. J. E. OVERTON, survive. Funeral services were held at the home last Saturday afternoon by Rev. R. N. FITTS, pastor of the local Methodist church, assisted by Rev. E. C. SHOE, pastor of the local Missionary Baptist church. Interment was in the Whitaker burial ground, near Stokes.

Mr. JAMES was active until about a year ago when ill health forced him to retire. He was married twice, his first wife who was Mrs. Luvenia BULLOCK, preceded him to the grave about thirty years ago. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Bethel. Funeral services will be conducted from the home by the Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER, Free Will Baptist minister, assisted by Rev. J. G. PHILLIPS, Bethel Methodist minister. Interment will take place in the family cemetery near the home. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Martha PARKER JAMES, and the following children: W. C. Mrs. Lydia PERKINS died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sackey GURGANUS, in Stokes, at 10 o’clock last Thursday morning. Mrs. PERKINS, 71 years old, had been ill for only two weeks. Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. GURGANUS Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock and interment was made in the Perkins family cemetery near Stokes. Mrs. PERKINS, a native of Pitt County, was the widow of the late L. T. PERKINS, who died in 1919. She was a member of Hickory Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Thomas L. PERKINS; two daughters, Mrs. Sackey GURGANUS and Mrs. Grace PARKER, both of Stokes; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

J. F. A. BRYANT, for several years a resident of Robersonville, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frances AYERS, in Bethel Monday night, February 16th. Mr. BRYANT was 60 years old and for the past several months was inactive on account of ill health. For several months he operated a filling station here but due to illness retired from this business last June. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4:00 o’clock in the Bethel Methodist Church by Rev. J. G. PHILLIPS and Rev. M. M. JOHNSON. Mr. Bryant was married three times. Surviving are his third wife, Mrs. Frances ROBERSON BRYANT, and the following children by this union: Luther, Eugene and George O. BRYANT, all of Robersonville; seven children by former marriages: Mrs. W. R. KEITH, of Hobgood; Fred BRYANT, of Kansas City, Mo., J. D. BRYANT, U. S. Navy; Mrs. C. D. TRACEY, Washington, D. C.; James BRYANT, U. S. Navy; Talmadge BRYANT, of Hawaii; Mrs. L. R. AYERS, and Ray BRYANT, of Bethel.
Last Rites for Anson Andrews

Funeral services were held for Anson ANDREWS, 66 of near Bethel last Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock. He died Monday, February 12th, and the interment was made in the J. A. Edmondson cemetery. He is survived by five sons, L. W. and D. W. ANDREWS, of Farmville; J. C. ANDREWS, of Rocky Mount; Clayton W. ANDREWS, of Fortress Monroe; and J. H. ANDREWS, of Langley Field; four daughters, Mrs. Chester LEWIS and Mrs. W. Z. ROBERSON, Greenville; Mrs. W. E. BULLOCK, Mrs. J. W. NORTON, of Tampa, Fla. and two brothers, E. C. ANDREWS of Parmele, and J. J. ANDREWS, of Jolle, California.
Richard Evans Dies Near Stokes

Richard EVANS, 70-year old citizen of the Stokes community, died at his home last Wednesday afternoon. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Funeral services were conducted from the graveside in the Evans family cemetery near Bell’s Fork, Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock, by the Rev. W. B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist minister, of Winterville. Mr. EVANS was a native of Pitt County and spent his entire life in the Stokes section where he was engaged in farming. Surviving are three sons: Victor EVANS, James EVANS and Bonage EVANS, all of Pitt County; three sisters, Mrs. Nancy ROSS, of Stokes; Mrs. Lizzinie VINCENT, of Winterville; and Mrs. Lee MCGOWAN, of Bell’s Forks; three brothers James T. EVANS and Guilford EVANS, of Pitt County, and EVANS, of Martin County.
