Theophilus Bland Dead

We are sorry to learn of the death of Mr. Theophilus BLAND, which occurred yesterday at his home, near Grifton. He was taken with a congestive chill and soon passed away.

Arch McGowan in Fatal Accident

Mr. Arch MCGOWAN, a citizen of this township, was accidently killed Monday morning. He left his home, four miles distant, on horseback intending to come to town, Just below Parker's Cross Roads, his horse stumbled and fell, throwing him off. In the fall, Mr. MCGOWAN'S neck was broken. Two persons riding along the road at the same time saw the accident. Mr. MCGOWAN was dead when they reached him.

J.L.W. Nobles Dead

Mr. J.L.W. NOBLES, an excellent citizen of Contentnea Township, died Sunday night. He was buried Monday afternoon with Masonic honors.

Alonzo Adams Killed

Last Saturday night, near Kinston, the horses ran away with the wagon with which Alonzo ADAMS, of Pitt County, was moving Dr. H.D. HARPER'S effects to Kinston, throwing ADAMS out and killing him very soon by the passage of the wagon over him.

Wade Moore Killed
Washington Progress, Thurs., April 17, 1913
Mayor F.M. WOOTEN, of Greenville, acting coroner, went to Belvoir Township to hold an inquest. There was a party in a schoolhouse out there. After the party two boys, Wade MOORE and Moses TYSON, both less than 17 years old, had a fight and TYSON is said to have struck MOORE across the temple with a strip of board.

Boys with Guns: One Accidently Kills the Other

A distressing accident occurred near Winterville, Saturday afternoon, in which a boy lost his life. Ollie KITTRELL, a son of C.T. KITTRELL and Louis CRAWFORD, a son of David CRAWFORD, both about 16 years of age, were out together shooting at the mark with a breech loading gun. While young KITTRELL had the gun young CRAWFORD happened to step in front of it just in time to receive an entire load from the gun in his left shoulder and was almost instantly killed. Young KITTRELL, was almost wild with grief over the accidental slaying of his playmate. Both families are greatly distressed. The victim of the accident was buried Sunday.

George McGowan Dead

Mr. George MCGOWAN, a Confederate soldier died at his home a few miles from Greenville Tuesday with paralysis. He was about eighty years of age and had suffered from a stroke of paralysis for some time. His remains will be buried this afternoon on Mr. John MCLAWHORN'S place.

Ed Smith Dead

Mr. Ed SMITH, son of the late John M. SMITH, died Tuesday with consumption. He leaves a wife and one child. The remains will be buried this afternoon at Red Banks Church about five miles from Greenville.

John Jones Dead

Ayden Items, May 16 - Mr. John JONES, an aged Confederate soldier died here Sunday night and was buried in the Ayden Cemetery Monday. He was a good old man. Funeral services at the grave by Rev. E.T. PHILLIPS.

Mrs. Pattie Johnson Dead

Ayden Items - Mrs. Pattie JOHNSON, age 70, mother of Mrs. F.C. TURNAGE of our town, died at the home of her daughter, Mr. W.T. HART, near Ayden where she had gone on a visit. Mrs. JOHNSON had been living in Ayden several years and was a member of the Methodist church. The burial will take place today at Hookerton, services by Rev. G.C. BAUSE.

Mrs. J.A. Sutton Dead

Mrs. J.A. SUTTON died at her home near Greenville Tuesday night with pneumonia. She had been an invalid for a long time. Sometime ago she took a treatment at the hospital in Baltimore and improved very much after her return home until she was taken with pneumonia and died Tuesday night. The remains will be buried this afternoon at Red Banks Church below Greenville.

George W. Anderson Dead

Bethel Items, Feb. 19 - Mr. George W. ANDREWS, a soldier in the United States Army, who came home on the sick furlough Christmas, died at his brother-in-law's, Mr. Mc. G. FORD, on Friday night last. He was buried Saturday evening at the family burying ground two miles from Bethel, by the I.O.O.F. A large crowd attended his burial.

Mr. John S. Harris Dead

We learn with regret of the death of Mr. John S. HARRIS, which occurred at his home in Falkland Township on Tuesday, after a long illness. Mr. HARRIS was about 55 years of age, and is survived by one daughter and four sons. He was truly a good man, and one of Pitt County's very best citizens. Among his neighbors he was known as a man of exceeding kindness and generosity, and was never known to turn a deaf ear to an appeal for charity or help. He was one who loved uprightness, and his own life was marked with the highest honor and integrity. His death is indeed a loss to the county.

Mrs. Elizabeth Braxton Dead

Ayden Items, Aug. 18 - Mrs. Elizabeth BRAXTON died this morning, having been confined to her bed for several months with cancer of the stomach. She was taken to Kinston Hospital some weeks ago, but nothing could be done for her. She was a splendid woman, a member of the Free Will Baptist Church, was the widow of the late Teel BRAXTON, and leaves one child. Miss Cora BRAXTON, all of Ayden.

Jesse Briley Dead

Mr. Jesse BRILEY, of Bethel Township, passed away at this house on Monday about 6 o’clock. He was 74 yeas of age and a good citizen. Peace to his ashes.

Julian Marshall Dead

A letter was received yesterday morning by Mrs. Sallie MARSHALL, containing the information that her son, Mr. Julian MARSHALL, had died in Louisiana on the 8th inst. He lived in Greenville several years ago and we regret to learn of this death.

Henry Short Dead

Died on Dec. 21, at his mother’s residence in Nash County, while on his return home from Raleigh, Mr. Henry SHORT, member of the House of Representatives from Pitt County from heart disease.

Died Monday evening at his boarding house in Raleigh, Sen. Davis J. RICH of Pitt County. He was born in Vermont in 1829.

John R. Lawrence Dead

Died on July 4 in Portsmouth, Va., John R. LAWRENCE, brother of L. W. LAWRENCE, aged about 60. He left Greenville about 22 years ago and spent the last 15 in Portsmouth.

Mr. D. D. Gardner Dead

Mr. D. D. GARDNER died at 11:30 o’clock, Sunday night, at his home on Third Street, after an illness covering several months. He was 66 years of age, a native of Wilson County, and moved to Greenville some twenty years ago. Mr. Gardner was twice married, his first wife being Miss Olivia DAVIS, of Lenoir County. By this marriage there were six living children, Messers, J. Z. GARDNER, of Greenville; W. D. GARDNER, of Snow Hill; A. D. GARDNER, of Oxford; Mrs. M. E. HAMILTON, of Wilmington; Mrs. H. O. ABBOTT, of Hamlet and Mrs. C. G. WHITEHURST of Bethel. Some years after the death of his first wife he married Mr. Willie WHITEHURST, of Martin County, who with three small children survive him. The funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by Rev. J. H. SHORE, the interment being in the Episcopal cemetery.

Sanford Gregory Dead

Bethel Items, Aug. 9…The mangled body of Mr. Sanford GREGORY who was run over by the train in Tarboro, yesterday morning, was brought down on the train last night to be buried here. He was buried this evening by the new graves of his father-in-law, Uncle Jacky BRYANT, and brother-in-law Elisha BRYANT.

We received word of the death of J. A. WILLIAMS in Washington, D. C., age 60. He was a native of Pitt County and worked at the White House for the past 22 years. He leaves a wife and children and was buried in Washington, D. C. He was the brother of Mrs. Ella GREENE and Mrs. Eva W. SATCHWELL.

Mrs. Margaret M. Carraway Dead

Died Mrs. Margaret M., wife of James F. CARRAWAY. She was born in Pitt County, married in 1851 and afterwards moved to Georgetown, S. C., where she died on June 14th in her 29th year. She was soon joined by her infant; Charlotte Ann Clementine, who died July 24th being 3 months and 25 days.

Mrs. Catharine Randolph Dead

Died in Greenville, N. C. on Dec. 20th, Mrs. Catherine RANDOLPH, 49, of apoplexy. She leaves two daughters and one son. She had been for many years a Roman Catholic, but lately too the Methodist faith.

Fred Tyson Dead

Fred, 16 year old son of Harvey TYSON of Contentnea Twsp., died on morning of Dec. 15th from the effects of a fall he got Sunday. Fred and some other boys were riding mules. The one he was riding dodged and he fell off against a bush, being hurt in the side.

Died in Farmville on Saturday, Oct. 25, Eli WILLIAMS. He was in an unstable mind for years and his business was in the hands of a guardian. He left a large estate.

Mrs. J. O. Pollard Dead

Died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. B. W. EDWARDS in Greene County last Saturday; Mrs. J. O. POLLARD of Pitt County. She was buried in the family burying ground in Beaver Dam Township.

Col. I. A. Sugg Dead

Col. Isaac A. SUGG of this town died at 7 o'clock Monday in the hospital at Washington. Colonel SUGG was 62 years old and a native of Greene county. After graduating at college and completing a course in law he moved to Greenville to engage in the practice of his profession. Col. SUGG is survived by five children, Mrs. Aylmer BROOKS, of Elizabeth City, Mrs. W. A. CLARK of Kinston, Messrs C. R. SUGG of Washington City, I. A. SUGG, Jr. of Waycross, Ga., Bruce SUGG of Wilmington and Julius SUGG of Greenville. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Henry HARDING of Greenville. One brother, Mr. B. F. SUGG of Washington. The remains were brought to Greenville on the midday Coast Line train and were taken from the depot to Cherry Hill cemetery for interment.

Funeral for Mrs. Jesse Haddock

Mrs. Martha M. (Duby) HADDOCK, 65, died at her home near Black Jack Friday night at 6:10 o’clock, after nine months of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by the Rev. J. C. GRIFFIN, Free Will Baptist minister of New Bern, and burial will be in the Mills family cemetery. They body will be carried to the church one hour prior to the time of services. Mrs. HADDOCK, daughter of the late Nabe and Martha Hardee MILLS, spent her life in the Black Jack community. She was married to Jesse HADDOCK in 1906 and he died in 1929. She was a member of the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Frank WILSON, Mrs. Prince MILLS, and Mrs. Louis Henry MILLS, all of Black Jack, and Mrs. Charlie MILLS of the home; 9 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Maggie ADAMS of Farmville and Mrs. Loudenia PAGE of Greenville; and two brothers, Ed MILLS of Galloway’s Crossroads and Mabe MILLS of Chicod School.

Mrs. Lucy DICKERSON FORBES, 57, wife of Jodie J. FORBES of near Grimesland, died Thursday in a Newport News, Va. hospital after two months of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Wilkerson Chapel Saturday afternoon at two o’clock and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. J. L. RUSSELL, Jr., pastor of St. Paul’s Pentecostal Holiness Church near Greenville will conduct the services. Mrs. FORBES spent all her life in Pitt County. She was married to Horton DICKERSON, who died in 1951. She was later married to Mr. FORBES who survives. Also surviving are a son and two daughter by her first marriage; Louis DICKERSON, Mrs. Woodrow ANGEL and Mrs. C. E. MESIC, all of Newport News, Va.; eight grand-children; five step-children; Mrs. Margaret SMALLEY of Toledo, Ohio, Joe Buck FORBES of Grimesland, Mr. J. B. OAKLEY of Greenville, Lennie FORBES and Mrs. James TYSON of Greenville; seven step-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Joe PARKS of Washington and Mrs. Pearl GASKINS of Portsmouth, Va.; and three brothers, Paul MOORE of Newport News, Va., Broadus MOORE of Grifton, and Huey MOORE of Denver, Colo.

Rites for W. H. Manning

Bethel—W. Harvey MANNING, died in a Rocky Mount hospital Sunday at 6:15 a.m. He had been critically ill for 10 days from a heart ailment. He was a member of the Bethel Methodist Church and the Bethel Masonic Lodge. The Masons will have charge of the services at the grave. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church here today at 3:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. N. W. GRANT, pastor assisted by the Rev. W. M. CASSELL, Baptist minister, and the Rev. John B. PARKER, Pentecostal Holiness minister. Interment will be in the Bethel Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Leontine DAVENPORT of Gainsville; a daughter, Mary Ann MANNING of the home; one son by a former marriage, Harvey D. MANNING of Miami, Fla.; three brothers, Jay Roy MANNING of Plymouth, George D. MANNING of Asheboro, X. G. MANNING of Bethel; two sisters, Mrs. H. J. STEVENS of Willow Springs, Mrs. John B. ROBERTSON of Clayton; his mother, Mrs. Anna J. MANNING of Bethel; two grand-children.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lula GARDNER MAYO, who died at Tayloe hospital this morning, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the graveside at Dennis SMITH Cemetery near Chicod High School by Rev. W. A. DAIL. Mrs. MAYO was born in Pitt County November 11, 1883, daughter of the late John and Julianna SMITH GARDNER. Mrs. MAYO was a lifelong resident of the Chicod community. Surviving are her husband, William B. MAYO of Route Three Washington; two sons B. A. and Dan MAYO of near Washington; six daughters, Mrs. Zeno MILLS of Greenville, Mrs. Nick ROGERS, and Mrs. H. H. STOCKS of Washington, Misses Maybelle, Henrietta and Annabelle MAYO of near Washington; two sisters, Mrs. Reba JONES of New Bern and Mrs. J. W. SHACKLEFORD of Pollocksville; two half brothers, Richard HARDEE of Ayden and Joe STOKES of Raleigh, one brother, Zack GARDNER of Vanceboro.

Mrs. M. M. Harriss Dead

Funeral services for Mrs. Mellie M. HARRISS, one of Greenville’s oldest residents, who died at her home here Sunday afternoon at the age of 90 years after several days of critical illness, were conducted this afternoon. The services were held at Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church with a former pastor, Rev. E. L. HILLMAN assisted by Rev. T. McM. GRANT, present pastor, in charge. Burial followed in Cherry Hill Cemetery. Mrs. HARRISS was born November 3, 1850, the daughter of the late Godfrey and Margaret LATHAM LANGLEY, and was a member of one of the oldest families in the county. She was the oldest member of Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church and took an active interest in church circles as long as she was able. She was loved and admired by a large circle of friends. Mrs. HARRISS was an aunt of Miss Maggie DOUGHTY, who died Friday night. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Lena CHRISTIAN, Mrs. Mary H. MAY, Mrs. A. R. HOUSE and Mrs. Charles BLANCHARD, all of Greenville; seven grandchildren; Mrs. H. G. KELLY of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Cecil DANIELS of Stonewall, Mrs. George BEST and Mrs. Warren PEARCE of Franklinton, Mrs. Thomas BALDWIN of High Point, D. Murray HOUSE of Oakdale, La., C. D. HOUSE of Danbury, Conn., William E. CHRISTIAN of Portsmouth, Va.; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral For Mrs. Effie James Leigh

Funeral services for Mrs. Effie JAMES LEIGH, 73, who died at the home of her daughter, Mr. H. M. PHIFER, 703 West Fifth Street Sunday evening at 6 o’clock after two years illness, were conducted at S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home this afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. Ralph JOHNSON, Holiness minister of Greenville, assisted by Rev. Leonard TOPPING, Presbyterian minister of Greenville. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Leigh, daughter of the late M. A. and Laura BARNHILL, was born near Bethel. She was married to Ed MAYO of Pitt County and he died in 1908. In 1912 she was married to Calvin LEIGH of Edgecombe County, and he died in 1916. Mrs. LEIGH was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church near Bethel, and lived in Greenville for 30 years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Madie PIERCE and Mrs. H. M. PHIFER, both of Greenville, and Mrs. C. B. MARSHBURN of Farmville; three sons, Fred L. MAYO of Belvoir, Matt MAYO of Conetoe, and Tom Henry LEIGH of Norfolk, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mr. J. E. HAMMONDS and Miss Flossie JAMES, both of Rocky Mount, and Mrs. Henry GURGANUS of Greenville.

Mrs. Lena Pollard Dead

Rocky Mount—Mrs. Lena RIVERS POLLARD, 42, died Saturday night in a local hospital. She had been in poor health since last March. She was born in Grimesland, a daughter of T. F. PROCTOR and Mrs. Mattie BUCK PROCTOR. She is survived by her husband, R. B. POLLARD; her mother; four brothers, Ben. F. of Rocky Mount, Adrian G. of Baltimore, William T. of Fayetteville and James O. PROCTOR of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. John T. LEWIS and Mrs. Dan WHITE, both of Grimesland. Funeral services were held from Johnson Funeral Home at 2 p.m. this afternoon, conducted by Dr. J. W. KINCHELOE, pastor of the First Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. R. H. SULLIVAN, Christian minister of Grimesland. Burial was in Pine View Cemetery in Rocky Mount.

Zeno Stocks Funeral Held

Mr. Zeno STOCKS, 59, died suddenly at his home, 915 Washington St., Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock after having suffered a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at the Chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home Friday afternoon at two o’clock by the Rev. Walter B. NOBLES, Free Will Baptist Minister of Winterville, and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Modern Woodmen of America, Greenville Camp 12885, will be honorary pall bearers. Mr. STOCKS, son of the late Joe and Clemmie NICHOLS STOCKS, was born and spent his entire life in Pitt County. He was married to Miss Pattie WHITEHURST of near Stokes in 1912 and she died in 1918. He was later married to Miss Minnie SUGG of near Ormondsville. He was a farmer until he moved to Greenville in 1931, and for the past three years he had been employed at Blount’s Fertilizer Plant. He was a member of Pine Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife; six sons, Joseph STOCKS of Williamston, C. Ray STOCKS of Norfolk, Va., Zeno Marvin STOCKS of near Greenville, Kerren H. STOCKS, of Greenville, James R. and W. Donald STOCKS, both of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Christine STOCKS JOLLY of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. J. Leslie PATE of Goldsboro, and Mr. W. J. MORGAN of Greenville; 14 grandchildren; and two brothers, W. F. and Lonnie STOCKS, both of near Greenville.

Rites For Mrs. Jasper Jones

Mrs. Fannie Mae JONES, 43, wife of Jasper JONES, died at her home near Greenville at 8:15 o’clock Saturday night after being ill for three months. Funeral services were conducted at Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church near Greenville at four o’clock Monday afternoon by the Rev. R. N. HINNANT, pastor, and burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Mrs. JONES was born in Pitt County and spent her entire life here. She was the daughter of Alonza and Lucy PARKER ELKS. She was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church near Greenville. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Clifton SESSOMS of near Greenville; a son Raymond E. JONES of the home; four grandchildren; her father, Alonza ELKS; a sister, Mrs. Tom MANNING; and four brothers, Henry, Elijah, George and Louis ELKS, all of near Greenville.

Mr. F. V. Johnston Dead

Mrs. Minnie MCGOWAN JOHNSTON, 65, widow of Frank V. JOHNSTON, died at Pitt General Hospital at one o’clock this morning after five days illness. Funeral arrangements have not been completed pending the arrival of relatives. Mrs. JOHNSTON was the daughter of J. K. and Betty TUCKER MCGOWAN, and was born and reared in Pitt County. She came to Greenville in December, 1906 after her marriage and had lived in Greenville since that time. Mr. JOHNSTON’S death occurred in 1932. She was a member of Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church and was also a member of the Greenville Woman’s Club, the Garden Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are three sons, F. V. JOHNSTON, Jr. of San Diego, Calif., and Alton R. and S. Wesley JOHNSTON, both of Greenville; two daughters, Mrs. E. H. GRAY of LaGrange and Margaret E. JOHNSTON of Tarboro and Greenville; eight grandchildren; two brothers, C. H. MCGOWAN, Sr. and Floyd MCGOWAN, both of Greenville; and a sister, Mrs. N. G. RAYNOR of Greenville.

Stella Hardee Kittrell Dead

Mrs. Stella Hardee KITTRELL, 87, formerly of Ayden, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy T. COX in Winterville Tuesday morning at three o’clock after a month of critical illness. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. E. G. COLE, Baptist minister of Winterville and burial will be in the Ayden cemetery. Mrs. KITTRELL, daughter of the late John Bryant and Elizabeth SMITH HARDEE, was born in Pitt County and spent her entire life in her native county. In 1885 she was married to L. L. KITTRELL, and he died in 1922. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Roy T. COX of Winterville, and Mrs. A. R. CANNON of Burlington; four sons, Ola S. KITTRELL and J. B. Mrs. P. S. MOORE, 59, of Gardner’s Cross Roads, died at her home at 11 o’clock this morning, following an illness of three weeks. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Rev. Gilbert DAVIS, Christian minister of Bell Arthur, will conduct the services. Burial will follow in the Gardner cemetery. Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. B. KILPATRICK. She spent her entire life in the community in which she died. Surviving are her husband; three sons, Edward, Francis and William MOORE; one daughter, Miss Pauline MOORE; four brothers, Moses KILPATRICK of Norfolk, Va., Jesse KILPATRICK of Zebulon; Edward KILPATRICK and Paul KILPATRICK, who is enrolled in the CCC; and two sisters, Mrs. C. W. WORTHINGTON and Mrs. Lula CHAPMAN, both of Ayden, R.F.D.

Mr. Grover Cleveland WORTHINGTON, died at his home near Winterville at 4:15 o’clock Saturday afternoon following two days of critical illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Chapel of the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock by the Rev. Perry CASE, Christian minister of Wilson, and burial was in the Worthington family cemetery near the home. Mr. Worthington, son of the late Alfred T. and Sarah MCGOWAN WORTHINGTON, was born in the Winterville Community and spent all his life there. He was a member of Reedy Branch Free Will Baptist Church and was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hattie SUTTON WORTHINGTON; six sons, Lloyd B., Carl and Norman WORTHINGTON, all of Winterville; Bryan WORTHINGTON of Greenville, Adrian WORTHINGTON of the home, and Gurman WORTHINGTON of the U.S. Air Force, now stationed in Illinois; a daughter, Mrs. Dan PEELE of Williamston; eight grandchildren; and three brothers, R. L., Heber F., and Jim Blaine WORTHINGTON, all of Winterville.

Mrs. HEMBY, daughter of the late C. D. and Florence WILLOUGHBY SMITH, was born, reared, and spent nearly all her life in the Bell Arthur Community. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church of Bell Arthur and was married to Ray HEMBY in 1922. Surviving are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. R. C. Joseph Edgar DAIL, 49, died Thursday morning, November 1, at a Wilson hospital after an illness of three week’s duration, and as a result of double pneumonia. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at his home by Rev., L. R. ENNIS, assisted by Rev. Jack TYSON and burial followed in Hollywood Cemetery. Regarded as one of Pitt County’s most highly esteemed farmers. He was a faithful follower of the Baptist faith, attending the local Baptist Sunday School regularly throughout the past several; years. Surviving are his widow a second wife, formerly Mrs. Lula HARRELL, and ten children: Misses Penina, Minnie, Louise, Ruby and Ruth, twins, Frank Douglas, Asa, Herbert and Elmer DAIL, and a sister, Mrs. Dock ROUSE, Snow Hill.

Richard S. FULFORD, 72, of Farmville, Route One, died late Sunday afternoon at his home after two years of declining health. Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock by the Rev. D. A. CLARKE, Methodist minister of Farmville. Burial followed in Fulford family Cemetery near Fountain. Mr. FULFORD had been living in the community in which he died for the past 18 years and was a well known farmer. He was a member of the Farmville Methodist Church. Besides his wife, surviving are two sons, Jesse and Jasper FULFORD, both of Farmville; two daughters, Mrs. Jesse BAKER of Elm City and Mrs. Ethel WHITE of Kinston; two half-brothers, L. A. Died Apr. 22, 1890, T. R.CHERRY. He was b. Feb. 17, 1827; m. Nov. 1, 1853. His widow and 5 children survive, 4 living in Greenville. Before the Civil War he was engaged in the merchantile business in Greenville and in 1868 formed a co-partnership with J. B. CHERRY under the style of T. R. CHERRY & Co., they did business for 20 years. At one time he was chairman of the Board of County Commissioners. The last few years Mr. Cherry’s health declined and he gave little attention to the business, and some months before his death he retired. He was buried in Cherry Hill cemetery, which was donated by him to the town several years ago.

Eugene WILSON passed away after an illness of a week. A little past two this morning Mr. Eugene WILSON died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Martha WILSON, on Dickinson Avenue. Mr. WILSON was 40 years old and for several years was a salesman in the store of his brother Mr. Frank WILSON. He is survived by two brothers, Messrs. W. B. and Frank WILSON and three sisters, Mrs. Ollen WARREN, Jr., and Misses Nannie and Lillie WILSON.

Departed this life March 7, 1881, suddenly at Clyde, Mrs. Holland SMITH in the 65th year of her age. The deceased was born in Pitt County, N. C., April 12th, 1816, and came to Darlington District, S. C. in 1846. In all relations she was an exemplary woman; as a wife she was affectionate and self sacrificing; as a mother she was noted for her maternal devotion; as a neighbor she was charitable and kind; and as a Christian she was true and faithful to the Master and His church. She joined the Gum Branch Baptist Church in 1860, and until she died lived a pious, devoted Christian life.

Mrs. Katherine CLARK DIXON died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Van. G. TAYLOR, in Everetts last Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock. Eighty years old, Mrs. DIXON had been in declining health for some time and her condition had been critical for several months. The daughter of the late Henry David and Lona SMITH CLARK, she was born in beaufort County on February 22, 1868, and spent her early life there. In early womanhood she was married to Edward L. DIXON and located in Pitt County where she lived until twenty six years ago when she came to Martin to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. TAYLOR, and Mr. TAYLOR in Everetts. She was a member of the Baptist church for many years, her daily life exemplifying its teachings and principles firmly yet tenderly. She was held in high esteem in her native and adopted communities, and although infirmities of age limited her activities in later years she continued interested in all that was good and noble. Surviving besides her daughter with whom she made her home are five sons, Edward S. DIXON of Everetts, Robert DIXON of Willard, Henry DIXON of High Point, and Jack DIXON of Williamston; four sisters, mrs. Nancy BOYD of Washington, mrs. Rachel BUCK, Mrs. Henrietta MCGOWAN and Mrs. Julia PORTER, all of Greenville; two half–sisters, Mrs. Janie SMITH of Ayden and Miss Sarah CLARK of Washington; two brothers, Wright CLARK of Vanceboro and Fred CLARK of Chocowinity; and a half–brother, Richard CLARK of Ayden. Funeral services were conducted in the Everetts Baptist Church Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by her pastor, Rev. E. R. STEWART. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston.

J. E. Whitehurst Dies in Florida

J. E. (Ed) WHITEHURST, 77, died at his home at Leesburg, Fla., Tuesday morning at 5 o'clock. Funeral services and burial will be held in Greenville at a time to be announced. Mr. WHITEHURST was born near Leens. He was a farmer and had lived in the Greenville and Bethel communities until he went to Florida about three years ago. He was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Cary MOORE WHITEHURST; a son, L. A. WHIITEHURST of Greenville; two daughters, Mrs. J. E. DAVIS of Fredericksburg, Va., and Mrs. Mary A. CRANDALL of Washington; one grandson; three brothers, L. F. and D. C. WHITEHURST of Hobgood, and G. V. WHITEHURST of Robersonville.

E. A. TRIPP, prominent Bethel citizen, died in the Park View Hospital, Rocky Mount, last Monday afternoon at 3:15 following a brief illness. Mr. TRIPP was 67 years old. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 o'clock in the afternoon in the Bethel Methodist Church. Rev. W. M. HOWARD, the pastor, and Rev. O. D. HOLT, officiated. Interment was made in the Bethel cemetery. Surviving are one son, Roy TRIPP of Greenville, two daughters, Mrs. William SMITH of Farmville and Mrs. Harvey D. MANNING, Jr., of Miami, Fla.; three brothers, ED TRIPP of Ayden, Rufus TRIPP of Whaleyville, Va., and Z. N. Mrs. Victoria Smith Dies

Mrs. Victoria SMITH, 82, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. C. EVERETT in Parmele Wednesday at 1:25 p.m., following a lingering illness. Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. SMITH in Bethel Thursday afternoon at 3:30, conducted by Elder J. D. FLYE, Primitive Baptist minister of Rocky Mount. Burial was in the family cemetery in Bethel. She was a daughter of the late Richard and Patsy WORTHINGTON HILL of near Ayden, but was reared by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Getting WORTHINGTON. She was a member of Little Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Conetoe. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Letha WORSLEY, Mrs. H. K. BROWN and Mrs. J. L. MANNING, all of Bethel, Mrs. R. C. EVERETT of Parmele and Mrs. Olivia BULLOCK of Robersonville; three sons, Leslie SMITH of Greenville, Marvin SMITH of Newport News, Va., and Elliott SMITH of Philadelphia; 35 grandchildren and 11 great–grandchildren.

James A. Whitley Dies in Stokes

Mr. James Ashley WHITLEY, 70, died at his home in Stokes Wednesday of last week about 2 a.m.; following several years of illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church in Stokes by the pastor, Rev. L. B. BENNETT, Thursday afternoon at 3:30, and burial was in the Bethel cemetery in Bethel. Mr. WHITLEY was born, reared and spent his entire life in Pitt County. He was a farmer and a member of the Methodist Church at Bethel. He was married to Miss Della JAMES January 4, 1905. Surviving are his wife, four sons: Paul E. WHITLEY of the Belvoir community, Ellis WHITLEY of Edgecombe County, and David Alton WHITLEY and Forrest WHITLEY, of Stokes; three daughters, Mrs. Joseph E. HARRIS and Mrs. L. E. BREWER of the Belvoir community, and Mrs. John Gray LEGGETT of Stokes; and eleven grandchildren.

Mrs. Lucy Roberson Barnhill Dies

Mrs. Lucy ROBERSON BARNHILL, highly respected and beloved citizen of Stokes, died in a Greenville hospital Monday morning at 4:45. Mrs. BARNHILL was born and raised in the Stokes community and spent most of her life there. She was recognized as one of the section's finest women and enjoyed the friendship and admiration of many people in Martin and Pitt counties. She first married C. F. PAGE and prior to his death in 1925, they made their home in Williamston. She later married L. F. BARNHILL who died in 1936. Her mother died when she was quite young and for several years she made her home in Robersonville with Mr. and Mrs. A. S. ROBERSON. Funeral services were held from the home in Stokes Tuesday afternoon with Elder A. B. AYERS of Bear Grass conducting the last rites. She was 68 years old and a member of the Briar Swamp Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by three step–daughters, Mrs. Elias NOBLES of near Winterville, Mrs. Arthur BARNHILL of near Greenville, and Mrs. Herman GARRIS of near Greenville, five step–sons, Jim BARNHILL of Pactolus, Arthur BARNHILL of near Statons Mill, Lam BARNHILL, Jr. of Bethel, Clarence BARNHILL of Belvoir and Leon BARNHILL of Sweet Gum Grove Community; two brothers, R. Mrs. Maggie Briley Died in Bethel

Mrs. Maggie BRILEY, widow of Watson BRILEY, died of a heart attack at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Louis DAIL, in Bethel, last Friday night. Mrs. BRILEY was 79 years old. Funeral services were held at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church Sunday at 3 p.m., with the pastor, Rev. D. W. ALEXANDER officiating. Interment was made in the Bethel cemetery. Surviving are five sons, William, E. B. and J. B. BRILEY of Bethel, and G. B. and Gus BRILEY of Greenville; eight daughters, Mrs. Louis DAIL, Mrs. Elmer BLAND and Mrs. Fred BOYETTE of Bethel, Mrs. Raymond LEE, Mrs. Henry LEE and Mrs. J. J. FARMER of Williamston, and Mrs. W. Funeral for Gus Bullock

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the home near Spring Green for Augustus BULLOCK, Pitt County native, who died the day before following an illness of a few days. He was 58 years of age. Mr. BULLOCK was born in Pitt county, in the Stokes community, and lived there until about 11 years ago, when he moved to Martin County, near Spring Garden Church. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lizzie LEGGETT BULLOCK of the home; one son, Paul E. BULLOCK of Portsmouth, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Jesse BATEMAN of Portsmouth, Va., Mrs. Robert HOLLIS of Robersonville, and Mrs. C. B. Mrs. Jesse P. Matthews, 60 years old and wife of W. B. MATTHEWS, died early last Sunday morning at her home in Rocky Mount following an illness of three weeks. Mrs. MATTHEWS was born June 13, 1886 in Pitt County near Bethel. She was the daughterb of the late W. G. HATHAWAY and Laura SMITH HATHAWAY. Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, James Alton MATTHEWS of the home and W. G. MATTHEWS of Robersonville; two daughters, Mrs. Eddie BRYANT and Mrs. Howard HIX of Rocky Mount; three brothers, W. C. HATHAWAY of Suffolk, L. T. HATHAWAY of Norfolk, and M. M. HATHAWAY of Rocky Mount; four sisters, Mrs. Jesse WHITFIELD and Daisy HATHAWAY of Norfolk, Mrs. C. M. BOONE of Rocky Mount, and Mrs. G. W. WILLIAMS of Elizabeth City. The funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. A. H. BUTLER of the Falcon Holiness church, in charge. He was assisted by Rev. J. R. COGGINS, pastor of the Nashville Free Will Baptist church, and the Rev. V. W. CALLAHAN, Rocky Mount Holiness minister. Interment was made in the Robersonville cemetery.

George Williamson Dies near Stokes

George Riley WILLIAMSON died at his home near Stokes at 8 a.m. last Wednesday after being critically ill a week. Funeral services were conducted from the home Thursday at 3 p.m. by Elder A. B. AYERS and Elder B. S. COWAN, Primitive Baptist minister of Bear Grass. Interment was made in the Robersonville cemetery. Seventy–three years old, Mr. WILLIAMSON was born and reared near Bethel and spent most of his life in the Bethel and Stokes communities. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Amanda JEFFERSON WILLIAMSON; three sons, William Luther WILLIAMSON of near Stokes, George G. WILLIAMSON of Tarboro, and James Daniel WILLIAMSON of Pinetown; six daughters, Mrs. Maggie BULLOCK of Norfolk, Mrs. Hattie TERRY of Robersonville, Mrs. Rosa DAIL of Tarboro, Mrs. Mary EDWARDS of near Pactolus, Mrs. Annie JONES of Bethel, and Mrs. Josephine BUTTS of Fountain; one brother, James Alfred WILLIAMSON of Norfolk.

Allen G. Stocks Takes Own Life

[Abstract] Alfred F. STOCKS, veteran of World War II and a hard working young farmer of near Robersonville, ended his life at his home last Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. It seems on Sunday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock his step–father and mother, Mrs. Pearl EVANS STOCKS ROBERSON, and other members of the family decided to visit in the neighborhood. STOCKS said he planned to go to the show. His body was discovered by his younger brother, Wiley STOCKS, 11 years old, about 5 o'clock. The tragedy came as a marked surprise to members of the family. He had been married and separated from his wife, but appeared to be getting along alright. STOCKS was born in Pitt County near Winterville, spending most his early life there before going with his family to Tarboro. The family moved to Martin County about five years ago. Besides his young brother, mother and step–father he is survived by three sisters, mrs. J. Clifton ROEBUCK of near Robersonville, Mrs. John T. BUNTING of Parmele and Velma STOCKS of the home. A brother, Pvt. Joseph G. STOCKS, was killed while serving in the country's armed forces somewhere in Holland on September 23, 1944. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock by Rev. J. M. PERRY, Robersonville minister. Burial was in the local cemetery.

Mrs. Bonnie ROLLINS WORSLEY died at her home in Bethel early Saturday night. Fifty–six years old. Mrs. WORSLEY had been in ill health for approximately 10 years and critically ill for ten days prior to her death. Daughter of H. A. and Betty BRYANT ROLLINS, she was born and reared in the Bethel community. Funeral services were held Monday at 3 p.m., in the Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. A. H. BUTLER of Falcon and Mrs. Eva Belle BROWN of the local church officiating. Burial was held in the Bethel cemetery. Surviving are three sons, Julius N. WORSLEY of Robersonville, and William E. WORSLEY and W. Z. WORSLEY, Jr. of Bethel; six daughters, Mrs. J. L. DAVENPORT and Mrs. W. M. POLLARD of Greenville, Mrs. Robert ROBERSON and Mrs. W. James SMITH of Bethel, Mrs. L. N. TERRY of Aulander, and Betty Jean WORSLEY of the home; a half–brother, William Henry ROLLINS of Vanceboro; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Venie Brown Dies

Mrs. Venie MOORE BROWN, one of Martin County's most unique characters, died at her home near here Monday, January 20th. A member of the local Chirstian Church, Mrs. BROWN was recognized by every one as a jolly, lovable personality. She was widely known and had a kind and humorous word for everyone and her contacts were many. Although she was 80 years old she was active and visited her friends frequently until ill health forced her partial retirement several months ago. Miss Venie, as she was known to everyone, was a native of Pitt County. For a long number years she made her home in the community near Joe WINSLOW'S. Mrs. BROWN loved people and this affection was reciprocated by a large circle of friends. She was the widow of H. T. BROWN, also a native of Pitt County. Funeral services were held from the home yesterday with Rev. J. R. EVERETT of the Baptist Church conducting the last rites. Interment was made in the family cemetery. Surviving are one son, Raymond BROWN, of the home and nine stepchildren.

James Oscar Williams Dies

James Oscar WILLIAMS died at his home in Pitt County last Friday, January 31, at 8 p. m. Seventy–three years old Mr. WILLIAMS was only seriously ill one hour before his death but he had been in declining health for several months. His death was attributed to a heart attack. Son of the late Willis H. and Sallie E. WILLIAMS, he lived at Leens and was born and spent most of his life in Pitt County. He was married to Ludie COREY, also of Pitt County in 1906. He was a member of the Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church and a farmer by profession. Funeral services were held from the Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church near Robersonville at 3 p. m. Sunday with Elders W. E. GRIMES and A. B. AYERS conducting the last rites. Interment was made in the Robersonville cemetery. Surviving are his wife, and a sister, Mrs. Mattie HINES of Hamilton.

W. James Meeks Dies in County

Critically ill for two months Mr. W. James MEEKS, prominent farmer of the county, died at his home near Robersonville last Friday, November 28th. The last surviving member of a large Martin County family, Mr. MEEKS was in ill health for at least five years and most of that time he was confined to his bed. Seventy–nine years old, Mr. MEEKS was born and reared near Robersonville. He was a faithful member of the Free Will Baptist Church at Cedar Grove near the home for at least 30 years. Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. W. B. NOBLES of Winterville Free Will Baptist Church and Rev. J. M. PERRY of the local Christian Church officiating. Interment was in the family cemetery near the home. Surviving are two sons, John D. MEEKS of Portsmouth, Va., Lester MEEKS of Robersonville; five daughters, Mrs. R. C. GURGANUS of Williamston, Mrs. Luther TAYLOR of Williamston, Mrs. F. A. NELSON of Raleigh, Mrs. Leslie SIMPSON of Robersonville, and Miss Bessie MEEKS of the home.

Charlie X. James Dies

Charlie X. JAMES, prominent Martin County farmer, died at his home near Flat Swamp Church last Thursday morning at 6:15. Forty–seven years old, Mr. JAMES was married in 1921 to Miss Rosa WORSLEY. A native of Pitt County he moved to Martin County 18 years ago and made his home near the Flat Swamp Church. He was a farmer, highly respected and enjoyed the friendship of many people in this section. A victim of heart trouble, Mr. JAMES had been in declining health for some time and his condition had been regarded as critical for three weeks. Funeral services were held from the Missionary Baptist Church here Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. Interment was in the local cemetery. Rev. J. R. EVERETT, pastor, conducted the last rites. Surviving are his widow; three sons, Charlie Curtis JAMES, Robersonville RFD 1, Robert Worsley JAMES and Clyde JAMES of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Walter R. KEEL of Robersonville; four brothers, George JAMES, Robersonville RFD 2, F. C. JAMES of Bethel, J. B. JAMES of Williamston, and J. L. JAMES of Greensboro; four sisters, Mrs. N. A. Farmville, Nov. 10---Mrs. Victoria OAKLEY, 71, wife of the late J. K. OAKLEY, died at her home in Saratoga Sunday morning following several months of illness. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. L. B. MANNING, pastor of Marlboro Free Will Baptist Church, of which Mrs. OAKLEY was a member. Burial followed in the family cemetery near Fountain. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Mary WHITLEY of the home, Mrs. Bettie HARRIS of Wilbanks and Mrs. Jack OWENS of La Grange; two brothers, Matthew HAMILTON of La Grange and Joe HAMILTON of Fountain.

Ernest Williams Dead

Ernest WILLIAMS, 67, died Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Tayloe Hospital in Washington of injuries received when struck by a car at Dudley’s Crossroads last Wednesday night. Funeral services will be held at the home Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. J. B. ROBERTS, Primitive Baptist minister of Farmville. Burial will be in the Williams family cemetery near Cannon’s Crossroads. Mr. WILLIAMS was born in Pitt county and lived in the Cannon’s Crossroads community. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anne STOCKS WILLIAMS; two sons, Larry WILLIAMS of near Scuffleton and Lorie WILLIAMS of New York; three daughters, Mrs. Almeta SIMONS of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Eldridge STYRON of Atlantic, N.C., and Mrs. DeWitt WATERS, Jr., of New York; two brothers, W. D. WILLIAMS and D. W. WILLIAMS of near Ayden; a sister, Mrs. John STOCKS, of Ayden; 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Alex Blow Died of Heart Attack

Alexander Lillington BLOW, Jr., 59, died at a local hospital Sunday nght at 11:30 following a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted from the home, 405 Biltmore Street, Tuesday, at 3 p.m. by his pastor, the Rev. Roscoe C. HAUSER, Jr., Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the old Episcopal Churchyard. Mr. BLOW was the son of of the late Alexander Lillington BLOW and Alice MONTEIRO BLOW of Greenville. He was born, reared and spent his entire life in Greenville. He attended the city schools here and N. C. State College. Since leaving school, he had been engaged in the insurance and was well known. More recently he was associated with H. A. WHITE and Sons. On April 11, 1919, he was married to Miss Mabel GRIFFIN of Selma. Surviving this union is one daughter, Mrs. Walter C. Mrs. Cottie Dixon Dies in Vanceboro

Mrs. Cottie DIXON, 76, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Grover C. LANCASTER, in Vanceboro Monday night at midnight following six months of illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Epworth Methodist Church near Vanceboro Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. W. R. CROWDER, the pastor assisted by the Rev. A. E. BROWN, Methodist minister of Bridgeton and burial will be in the churchyard. The body will remain at the S. G. Wilkerson & Sons Funeral Home until Wednesday afternoon, and will be carried to the church one hour prior to the time of services. Mrs. DIXON, daughter of the late David C. and Henrietta WAYNE SMITH, spent all her life in the Vanceboro community. She was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church. She was the wife of Charlie House DIXON, who died in 1904. Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. J. C. IPOCK of New Bern, and Mrs. Grover C. LANCASTER; four sons, Ezra, Ravernell and Charlie DIXON, all of Vanceboro, and Guy DIXON of near Vanceboro, 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Laura LANCASTER and a brother, L. E. SMITH, both of Vanceboro.

Mrs. J. J. Oakley Dead

Mrs. J. J. OAKLEY, 87, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. L. COX, in the Calico Crossroads community Monday night at 9:25. She had lived in Pitt County all her life and was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. F. L. COX of Calico, Mrs. A. J. COX of Greenville, Mrs. H. D. COX of Washington and Mrs. Lucretia COX of Washington, D.C., one son, Johnnie OAKLEY of the home, one sister, Mrs. Annie GODLEY of Grimesland, and one brother, Tom ADAMS, of Chocowinity, 28 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. F. L. COX Wednesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. D. W. ALEXANDDER. Burial will be in the Oakley family cemetery.

Willie Williams Dies of Heart Attack

Willie WILLIAMS, 65, died of a heart attack at his home in the Cox’s Mill community Sunday at 4:30 a.m. He was born and reared in Pitt County, the son of the late Billy and Sal Laza WILLIAMS. Mr. Williams was first married to Nolia STOCKS and in 1906 married Allie Elizabeth CANNON. He was a farmer. Surviving are his wife, Allie Elizabeth CANNON WILLIAMS, six daughters, Mrs. Bonnie MILLS, Mrs. Ellis ADAMS, Mrs. Roy BEACHUM of near the home, Mrs. W. O. WHITE, Jr., of near Greenville and Evelyn Louise and Mary Rose of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Tom MOORE and Mrs. Maggie SUTTON; one half sister, Mrs. Lonnie WHITE of near Cox’s Mill; one brother, Ernest WILLIAMS, of near Cox’s Mill; three half brothers, Marshal Williams, Coon Williams and Thad Williams, all of Greenville; and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the home Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the family cemetery near the home. Red Men will have charge of the services.

J. R. Vandiford Dies of Heart Ailment

J. R. VANDIFORD, 59, died at 3 o’clock Monday morning at Pitt General hospital from a heart ailment after only two days illness. Funeral services were conducted from the home in Craven county this afternoon at two o’clock by Rev. J. W. NORRIS, Free Will Holiness minister of Pink Hill, and burial followed in the Manning family cemetery in Littlefield. Mr. VANDIFORD was born, reared and spent his entire life in Pitt county. He was a member of the Black Jack Free Will Holiness church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leona BUCK VANDIFORD; two sons, Benjamin VANDIFORD and Linwood Earl VANDIFORD, both of the home, one daughter, Ordatha Rose VANDIFORD, also of the home; two brothers, Matthew and David VANDIFORD of New Bern, and one sister, Mrs. Bryce BRATCHER of near New Bern.

Miss Mary Ann Pilgreen Dies at 93

Miss Mary Ann PILGREEN, 93, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. T. P. LANGLEY of near Pactolus Saturday afternoon at 5 o’clock after a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted from the home Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. J. J. BELL, Pentecostal Holiness minister of the Pactolus community. Burial followed in the family cemetery nearby. Miss PILGREEN spent her entire life in Pitt county and was one of its oldest residents. Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. T. P. LANGLEY and Mrs. Susie DUNN both of Pactolus, and three nephews, R. M. and J. R. PILGREEN both of Ballard’s Cross Roads, and T. G. PILGREEN of Pactolus.

James H. Williams Claimed By Death

James Henry WILLIAMS, 81, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Vicey BARNES of near Red Banks church, at two o’clock this morning. He had been ill for five months and critically ill for two weeks. Funeral services will be conducted at Red Banks church Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock by the pastor, Elder J. B. ROBERTS and burial will follow in the churchyard. The body will remain at S. G. WILKERSON and Sons Funeral Home, 625 Dickinson avenue, until 1:30 Tuesday afternoon and will then be moved to the church. Mr. WILLIAMS was born, reared, and spent his entire life in Pitt county. He is survived by one son, James I. WILLIAMS of Grifton; four daughters, Mrs. Vesta STOCKS and Mrs. Vicey BARNES of near Greenville, Mrs. Stella ALLEN of near Williamston, and Mrs. J. H. WILLIAMS of Pollocksville; 23 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren; one brother, Jodie WILLIAMS of Black Jack and one sister, Mrs. Almeta SMITH of Mount Holly. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

C. S. Smith Dies at Home

Mr. C. S. SMITH, aged 58 years, died at his home in Ayden yesterday afternoon after several days illness from pneumonia. The interment took place this afternoon in the Ayden cemetery. Mr. SMITH has been in this city since August 1922, in the employ of Tucker and Clark and was held in the highest esteem by a host of friends. For several years, prior to coming to Greenville, he was chief of police of Ayden, a position which he held with credit and honor. He is survived by his wife and three sons.

Mrs. Ida M. Boyd Dies

Mrs. Ida MOORE BOYD died Wednesday afternoon at the home of D. J. SPAIN at Hudson’s Crossroads, following a year’s illness. Mrs. BOYD was born in Kinston, the daughter of W. J. MOORE and the late Annie MOORE. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church of New Bern. Mrs. BOYD was first married to T. B. CARNEY and of this marriage two sons, Albert CARNEY of Monks Corner, S. C., and James A. CARNEY of San Antonio, Texas, survive. She was later married to Wess BOYD, and one son, Percy BOYD of Pink Hill, survives. Also surviving are two sisters; Mrs. T. L. HUGGINS of Wilmington, and Mrs. Emma M. CARTER of Kinston; one brother, Lonnie MOORE of Kinston, and her father, W. J. MOORE of Dudley’s Crossroads.

Mrs. J. H. Stocks Claimed by Death

Mrs. J. H. STOCKS, 62, died at her home near Ayden early this morning as the direct result of a heart attack suffered yesterday following an extended illness. Funeral services will be conducted at the Ayden Baptist church at 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon, by Rev. Frank MORRIS, Mrs. STOCKS’ pastor, assisted by Rev. L. A. LILLEY, Ayden Methodist minister. Burial will follow in the Cox cemetery, five miles east of Ayden. Mrs. STOCKS was twice married, first to Hylan COX. Of this union two sons, Lee and Jesse COX, survive. Later she was married to Mr. STOCKS, of which union eight daughters and three sons survive. They are Misses Elva and Elizabeth STOCKS of the home; Mrs. Louis LANCASTER of Lenoir county, Mrs. Jesse HARRIS and Mrs. Robert DAIL of Kinston, Mrs. Walter BROOKS of Greene county, Mrs. Larry WILLIAMS and Mrs. C. W. GARRIS of Ayden, Luther STOCKS of Ayden, Lathan STOCKS of Greene county and Herman STOCKS of Ayden.

Last Rites for Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth WILSON, 87, daughter of the late Nahum and Chrischaney GARRIS, were conducted at the home of her son, Willie C. WILSON, of near Ayden Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. L. A. LILLEY and interment was in the Wilson cemetery. Assisting Mr. LILLEY with the services were the Rev. BALLARD of Greenville, Walter NOBLES of Winterville, MERRIEE of Snow Hill. Mrs. WILSON was born Oct. 3, 1853 and reared in Pitt county. For the last few months, she had been in declining health. At the time of her death she was visiting with her son, J. W. WILSON, of La Grange. Mrs. WILSON was a member of the Latter Day Saints. One daughter, Mrs. J. A. HARDEE of Greenville, is a survivor by the first husband, Ben STOCKS. In 1882 Mrs. WILSON was married to Joseph WILSON. Of this marriage three children survive; J. W. of LaGrange, W. Zeno of Hobgood and W. C. of Winterville; 19 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Samuel F. Harper Dies at Home

Samuel Furney HARPER, 53, a prominent Pitt county farmer, who died at his home in Centreville, at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, following a stroke of paralysis, was buried at 2 o’clock this afternoon in the Ayden cemetery. The funeral service was conducted from the late home, by his rector, Rev. A. C. D. NOE, of Ayden, assisted by Rev. R. F. PITTMAN, of Ayden. The Masonic lodges of Ayden and Grifton took part in the service at the grave and members of the fraternity acted as pallbearers. Mr. HARPER was a valued citizen of his community and a vestryman of old St. John’s Church, near Grifton. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Mae HART of Ayden; four children, Earl, Margaret, Claudia and Billy, all of the home community; four sisters, Mrs. R. H. BROOM, Mrs. J. C. GRIFFIN, Mrs. Mollie ROBERSON, of Ayden, and Mrs. W. O. ROLLINS of Winterville.

C. A. Ipock, Sr. Claimed by Death

C. A. IPOCK, Sr., 82, died at his home at Ernul this morning at 10 o’clock after several months of illness. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the home by Rev. Bruce BARROW, assisted by Rev. Duff TOLER, both Free Will Baptist ministers. Burial will follow in the family burial ground near Ernul. Mr. IPOCK was fist married to Miss Julia Alice IPOCK of Craven county, in 1890. She died in 1915. To this union there are surviving: D. A. IPOCK and C. A. IPOCK, Jr., of Ernul, and the following daughters: Mrs. Ellis IPOCK, Mrs. L. M. BAYSDEN, Mrs. D. W. FERREBEE, Mrs. John SMITH of Ernul, and Mrs. J. L. STEWART of Sanford; 32 grandchildren, one great grandchild, three sisters, Mrs. Mollie WILLIS of Bridgeton, Mrs. Sarah MILLER of Ernul, and Mrs. Ed MCLAWHORN of Vanceboro. Mr. IPOCK was a member of Macedonia Free Will Baptist Church of Ernul. He was a farmer and had spent his entire life in the Ernul community.

J. J. Hathaway Dies

J. J. HATHAWAY, 83. died at his home in Belvoir township Sunday morning about 9 o’clock, following long illness. Funeral services were conducted from Gum Swamp Church, of which the deceased was a member, this afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. E. B. JOYNER, of Saratoga, burial following in Hathaway graveyard. Mr. HATHAWAY is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Annie JOYNER, one brother, Bill HATHAWAY, and two sisters, Mrs. Palina RIDDICK and Mrs. Puss SHELTON, all of this county. The deceased was a Civil War veteran. He was highly esteemed in the community where he lived for so many years.
