Rollo never claimed the title of Duke. He was Count in Rouen,
nothing more. The title was occasionally used interchangeably
with Count by his descendants through Robert II (Rollo was
Robert I) the Magnficent. Robert's son, William II (the
Conqueror), insisted on the title
of Duke, though his right to it is not at all clear. As no one
ever got the better of William for long, what he demanded was
accepted all around. The only "Dukes" in France were the former
kingdoms Burgundy, Brittany, Aquitaine and Gascony-Guienne. The
title was only used for "royal" rulers who could not claim royal
authority and descent. No King of France "created" a Duke until
the reign of John II (1350-1364), who restricted it to his
younger sons (Anjou, Berry) and to close relations (Bourbon).

ROLLO was Norwegian; he repeatedly attacked the shoe of England
and fought King Alfred's forces. He then crossed the Channel
and sailed up the Seine toward Paris, laying waste whatever was
in his path. He and his marauding Norsemen settled along the
river and the northwestern coast of what is now France, giving
the area its name, Normandy.
The Frankish King, Charles the Simple (879-929), a great-great
grandson of CHARLEMAGNE, after 20 or 30 years recognized that
the Norsemen were there to stay. ROLLO agreed to accept
Christianity and acknowledged the suzerainty of CHARLES, and in
912 he was made DUKE OF NORMANDY and formally granted the fief
upon which he and his Norsemen had been settled for years.
Banished from Norway to the Hebrides about 876; in 890
participated in Viking attack on Bayeux where Count Berenger of
Bayeux was killed and his dau Poppa captured and taken in 886 by
Rollo as his 'Danish' wife. Under the Treaty of St Claire in 911
he received the Duchy of Normandy from Charles III the Simple.

It is less than certain that Rollo of Normandy was the same as
Hrolf Rognevaldsson.
I only know of two children by Poppa - Longespee and the
daughter (Adele) married to William of Poitou. There are no
known children by Gisela. taf

After invading northwest France, Rollon (Rollo) seized Rouen and
the land surrounding it and Charles the Simple granted him part
of Neustria. Rollo then embrace Christianity and became ruler of
Normandy. He was known as "The Dane", 1st Duke of Normandy.
Yeilded homage for his Dukedom to Charles the Simple, King of

He had a Viking career, raiding in Scotland, Ireland and France.
He was defeated outside Chartres in 911 but his right to lands
in the Seine valley was later confirmed by the emperor and he
was baptised by the Archbishop of Rouen. Info from David C
