ABT 1565 - ____

ID Number: I84047

  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: ABT 1565, Canterbury, Kent, England.

  1. +JOHN FLOOD FLUDD
  2. +John FLOOD "the Immigrant"

Notes

"The Flood family appear to have come from Brastead and Canterbury in Kent. John Flood was the son of Nicholas Fludd (born ca 1565);

Richard Flood was the son of John Fludd (bapt. 10 August 1572 at Brastead, Kent) and a younger daughter was Katherine Fludd (bapt. 31 August 1579 at Brastead), who married Thomas Lunsford at Greenwich St. Alphage. They were the parents of Thomas Lunsford who was the second husband of Elizabeth Wormeley, who married Richard Kempe, Secretary of Virginia, as her first husband [see Noel-Currer-Briggs, "The Search for Mr. Thomas Kirbye, Gent.", Phillimore and Co., 1987]."

Sarah MAGEE?

ABT 1750 - 1784

ID Number: I23464

  • RESIDENCE: NC and Long Bluff, Marlboro Co. SC
  • DEATH: 1784
  • BIRTH: ABT 1750
  • RESOURCES: See: notes Possibly 1st Wife speculative [S800]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) MAGEE

Family 1 : John HODGES II
  1.  Mary HODGES

Notes

** Your John Hodge(s) had a first wife Sarah, who may have been the mother of several of the children listed for Ann. I estimate that your John Hodges married Sarah in about 1777. Sarah may have been a Megee (or Magee). Sarah died in after 1784, and John married Ann before 1791.

Notes from a microfilm copy of the WPA transcripts of deeds in Marlboro County show :

February 19, 1784. Deed between JOHN HODGES and James Cook both of the Parish of St. David's in the State of South Carolina......for and in consideration of one horse the sd JOHN HODGES paId by the said James, hath......Sold and delivered to the sd.James that tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and fifty acres............................................
Signed. Sealed and delivered.JOHN (X) HODGES (L.S.) SARY (X) HODGES (L.S.)

Sept. 26, 1791. Deed. JOHN HODGES & ANN his wife, of Darlington County, State of S.C. of the one part & Moses Pearson, of Marlborough County, State of S.C. of the other part. For L200 sterling, 172 1/2 acres of land................................
Witnesses: JACOB BUCKHALLS, GEORGE HODGE, ELIZABETH EVANS. JOHN HODGES (L.S.) ANN HODGES (L.S.).....................

Feb. 5, 1795. Deed of Gift. ISHAM HODGES and MARY HODGES, his wife, of Marlborough County, State of S.C. on the one part and MARY HARRY, daughter of JOHN & SARAH HODGES. We do give, one negroe woman named Phillis, one negroe boy named George .............Signed ISHAM HODGES (LS), MARY (X) her mark.............

This deed of gift is interesting. It shows that maybe John was married to Sarah and that they had a child Mary who married a Harry. I wonder if this is the same Mary who later married Noel Waddell?

Because the above deeds may cause some confusion I will tell you that at the time people lived near and on both sides of the Pedee River - those on the east side in Marlborough County and on the west side in Darlington County. [S800]

Col. William Allen WHITE

1798 - 1844

ID Number: I69897

  • TITLE: Col.
  • OCCUPATION: Planter
  • RESIDENCE: Bedford Co. VA
  • BIRTH: 1798
  • DEATH: 1844
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1615] [S2026] [S2674]
Father: Jacob WHITE
Mother: Hannah SPEARS SPIERS

Family 1 : Caroline POINDEXTER
Family 2 : Lucy McDaniel REESE
  1. +Sallie Spears WHITE

Notes

Col. William Allen White, born about 1800, son of Capt. Jacob White and Hannah Spiers White was first married to Caroline Poindexter on November 3, 1828. Second marriage to Lucy McDaniel Reese.
Col. William White was a prosperous planter of Bedford County, owning vast tracts of land and many slaves. He was a kind and lenient master, giving them always a half holiday on Saturdays, for their own pleasure and amusement. The plantation, he inherited from his father, was a village in itself. On it was located the manor house, slave quarters, store, mill, shop, etc. He was a man of fine mind, pleasing personality, well educated, public spirited, honorable, and highly esteemed. He was a Christian gentleman of the highest type, a friend to the poor, affectionate father, and a man of great influence in this county, holding positions of trust and responsibility. In 1832, he was commissioned Captain of the 91st Virginia Militia, and in 1835 he was commissioned Col. of the same company. An old roll book once belonging to him, is now the prized possession of Dr. Benjamin F. Sledd, Proffessor of English at Wake Forest College, a great-grand nephew of Col. William White, and the son of William E. Sledd, for whom on the death of his father, James Sledd, Col. White was made guardian in 1840.
Col. William Allen White married Lucy McDaniel on May 10, 1841. She was very young, scarcely more than a girl. She was noted for her marvelous beauty and gracious personality.
Col. White died in 1844- just in the prime of his life. He was laid to rest in the family burying ground at "Charlemont Lodge" by the side of his parents.
