ID:      1561
Full Name:      Edwin Walker Houghton
Occupation:      Architect
Gender:      M
Nationality:      UK/US
Birth Date:      08/05/1856
Death Date:      05/16/1927
Family:      Spouse: Houghton married Margaret Ann Crudge in 1884.
Parents: His father was Thomas Houghton (born c. 1818 in Edgbaston, Warwickshire, UK), who in 1861 at the time of the English Census worked as a grocer in the town of Hartley Wintney. His mother was Eliza Augusta Brown Houghton (born c. 1824 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, UK). His family had been involved in architecture and surveying in England; he apprenticed in the architecture firm of an uncle and of his older brother, Thomas Marcus Houghton (born c. 1846 in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, UK). In 1861, the Houghton Household included Thomas Marcus (born c. 1846), Eliza Augusta (born c. 1848), Catherine (born c. 1851), Albert (born c. 1853), Arthur Henry (born c. 1858) and Miriam Sarah (born c. 1860). All of the Houghton children were born in the Hartley Row Neighborhood of Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, UK. Thomas Marcus, Edwin, Arthur, and Miriam lived in with their parents in Crookham Common, Hampshire in 1871. Thomas worked as a farmer on 14 acres of his own land, while Eliza operated a "ladies school." Thomas Marcus Houghton was recorded working as an unemployed joiner.
Children: Edwin W. Houghton practiced architecture with his sons between 1913-1927; in 1900, the Houghtons had had two children, only one of whom was alive, according to the sometimes accurate US Census of that year.
Relocation: Born in Hartley Wintney, a town in the northeast of Hampshire, England, UK, Edwin Walker Houghton's family lived there in 1861, the year of an English Census. Two servants and a boarder also lived with them at this time. In 1881, Edwin lived with his brother Albert H. Houghton, his wife and son on Shaw Lane in the city of Shaw-cum-Donnington, West Berkshire, Berkshire, England. He and his brother were reported to have been working as joiners. Houghton immigrated to the US in 1884; he worked as a farmer in El Paso, TX, and as an architect in Pasadena, CA, before moving north. He arrived in Port Townsend, WA, in early 1889, and to Seattle soon thereafter, drawn to the city after the Great Fire of that year. Margaret and Edwin Houghton lived in the Occidental Hotel, in the center of Seattle's Pioneer Square, in 1900. Houghton died in Seattle, WA.
Biographical Information:      Education: Houghton received an education in public and private schools in Birmingham, England; B.S., King Edward's College,

Miscellaneous: A City of Seattle web site on the Maud Building, (see Web Sites), indicated that Houghton and Saunders may have met each other in California before incorporating with each other in Seattle, WA. In his obituary of 1927, the writer for the Washington State Chapter American Institute of Architects Monthly Bulletin, stated: "During his active career many of the older buildings on Seattle were designed by Mr. Houghton and he was particularly distinguished as a designer of theatres. A genial personality and never failing optimism, were characteristic of the man and it seemed fitting that this should continue to the end, which came suddenly while at his office desk." An Illustrated History of Los Angeles Co., CA, p. 748
EDWIN WALKER HOUGHTON, architect, Pasadena, was born in Hartley Row, England, in 1856. His father was a business man, farmer and builder. After attending school until eighteen years of age, he associated himself with his brother at Elongate Hill, London, where he learned the art of architecture.
Studying this six years, he, in company with his brother, came to America. Two years subsequently he returned to England, and October 13, 1884, married Miss Margaret H. Crudge, daughter of Mrs. Crudge, of Tiverton, Devonshire. Soon afterward he came again to America and settled in El Paso, Texas, two years, and then came to Pasadena. His office is in the First National Bank Building. He has designed and superintended the construction of the following residences in Pasadena: James Hewitt's, $3,000; Mrs. Graham's, $5,000; J. G. Rust's, $3,500; T.Jones's, $4,000; Dr. Arthur's, $6,500;
Dr. McQuilling's, $6,500; Dr. Schultz's, $2,000; H. H. Rose's, $4,000; A. E. McBride's, $4,000; T. N. Harvey's, $4,000, and Mrs. E.B. Dexter's, $7,500. Mr. Houghton's charges are as follows: Preliminary studies, 1 per cent; working drawings and specifications, 2 per cent; working drawings and details, 3 percent; working drawings and superintending, 5 per cent.

Moore Theatre
1932 Second Avenue (Edwin W. Houghton, 1907)

The Moore is Seattle's oldest existing theater, and is managed by Seattle Theatre Group (STG). The building was designed by premiere Seattle architect Edwin W. Houghton (1856-1927), whose other theater projects included Seattle's Grand Opera House and Majestic Theatre, the Clemmer Theatre in Spokane, the New Whatcom Theatre in what became Bellingham, and the Grand Theatre in Aberdeen, among more than 70 theaters on the West Coast, in Salt Lake City, and in Boston. Named for its developer and original owner, James A. Moore (1861-1929), the Moore has been a stalwart workhorse among Seattle's theaters for more than a century, providing a constant, serviceable, poignantly atmospheric venue for live performance.

When it opened, the Moore was considered to be one of the finest theaters on the West Coast. The Moore was part of a larger building that incorporated a hotel and basement swimming pool. James Moore owned and operated the Washington Hotel (formerly called the Denny Hotel) on 3rd Avenue between Denny and Virginia streets on the summit of Denny Hill. That hotel was demolished to make way for the Denny Regrade project, which leveled Denny Hill and lowered Moore's land. The Moore Theatre/Moore Hotel building was constructed on that lowered site.

The Moore's enormous lobby -- reputedly the largest on the West Coast -- boasted wainscoting of Mexican onyx and lighting fixtures made of solid brass. The floor was constructed of marble set in a mosaic pattern. Houghton's design included gently sloping ramps rather than stairs connecting the lobby to the balcony level. The balcony was supported by massive steel girders that spanned the width of the house, negating the need for any vertical support posts. None of the Moore's seats had obstructed views, an almost unheard of situation in theaters at that time. The theater featured 26 large boxes high in the auditorium and three more at ground level. Multiple exits and a heavy asbestos curtain prompted theater publicity materials boasting that the house could be completely cleared in two minutes in the case of fire.4
Notablea noted theater architect
ResearchArlene Houghton: Originally family from New York State; settled in Seattle WA. (I think I told you that one of them designed the first ramp for disabled persons for theatres. That theatre is still standing in Seattle, I believe)
One of them also had a dry-goods store there and traded with Native Americans.9
