Biography

Arlene Houghton: John Carroll was originally from Washington State. Apparently, his grandfather was an architect there and designed the first ramp for theatres for disabled persons. I believe that theatre is still standing. Also, I believe his mother was a music teacher. And one of his grandfathers had a dry goods store in Seattle where he traded with Native Americans. He was an accountant at International Harvester and was also in WWII as a lieutenant in the navy. He was in charge of a landing craft in Okinawa and served in Japan after the war. His wife was Gwendolyn Phillips, who worked in the bookstore at Mills College.¹
