Dawson County: Created December 3, 1857 mainly from Lumpkin County.   Later a portion was taken from Gilmer County.

County seat is Dawsonville. (In 1850, Calhoun, Ga was called Dawsonville before it was renamed.)

The County was named for Judge William C. Dawson. See The Political Graveyard: Dawson County, Ga.

From Walt Foster

My great great great grandfather, James Foster, built the "FIRST" Dawson County Courthouse...The newly formed county contracted with James Foster to build a building to be used by the "Inferior Court". It is recorded in the first ordnaries book on pages 2 and 3. The contract in the amount of $29.75 is awarded to James Foster in 1858. He was paid $30.00 on completion of said building.  I found the Ordinaries book in the Third Dawson County Courthouse about 13/14 years ago.

by the Dawson County Historical and Genealogical Society -

This project was an effort to locate and record all the known cemeteries in Dawson County. The project began in 1999, and all the cemeteries were surveyed at least twice, and the entries proof read several times.

The cemeteries are listed in alphabetical order, with markers listed by row number and marker number, followed by name, birth date, death date, and other pertinent genealogical information found on the marker. There may be more than one marker listed for some of the graves. For example some graves may have a funeral home marker and a tombstone; therefore, each would be listed.

The book is 8-1/2 x 11", hardbound, attractive, contains 252 pages, and several photographs of tombstones. There are two maps (North and South) which show the cemetery locations in Dawson County. Additionally, the GPS (Global Positioning System) are included which is especially helpful in locating those hard-to-find cemeteries. The book also has a full-name index.

This is a great resource book for genealogical researchers and libraries! It was published with the assistance of a grant from the R. J. Taylor, Jr., Foundation.

The cost is $30.00 plus $5 shipping and handling, to be ordered from: Dawson County Historical & Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 1074, Dawsonville, GA 30534.
