This appears to be the Mathieu Gloray who married Ester Johannot. His parents are Anthoine Gloray and Marie Baibrit (? illegible), and witnesses at the baptism were Mathieu Johannot and Anne Pinet. Ester Johannot was the dau. of this Mathieu and his wife Catherine Pinet, Anne Pinet was the sister of Catherine, and the wife of the brother of Mathieu, Barthelemy Johannot. Mathieu and Ester appear in Morges 06 dec 1686 at the baptism of the daughter of Pierre Cr�gut, cy devant Ministre � Annonay en Vivaretz. By 1690, they were in Erlangen, Germany, as was the minister Pierre Cr�gut and several others of their relatives.

[9900] It has been at least 35 years since we started collecting data on the Gnaegi family and there are still many discrepancies to sort out. What follows should be no means be considered totally accurate...rather, it represents what has been collected to date and should be considered a work in progress.
Our first informant was Eber Cockley of the Somerset County Historical Society in Meyersdale, PA. Later information came from several printed works mentioned in my bibliography and the authors did not agree with one another regarding the number of children, etc. Because the family used many different spellings of the surname, the records were difficult to follow. For the sake of clarity, the spelling Gnaegi is being used in this database.
Most of the records show that Elizabeth Landis was the wife of Christian Gnaegi and it was many years before we learned that his first wife was Anna (Nancy) Seiler and she was supposedly the mother of all the children. However, a new search should be undertaken to see if additional proof can be located.

[10059] There are many different theories about the date and place of birth for Johannes Gnaegi, as well as the name of his first wife. It is entirely possible that we will never find the answers to the many questions surrounding his life. There were early Anabaptist Gnaegi families living in Steffisburg, Switzerland (near Lake Thun) who later went to the Alsace area of St. Marie-aux-mines and there were other Gnaegi families in the Palatine who could have been related.
What can be proved is that Johannes emigrated to America in 1742 aboard the ship Francis and Elizabeth, along with other Amish families named Yoder, Miller and Zook, with whom he would continue to be associated in Pennsylvania.
Several sources give the name of his first wife as Mary Holden, an English woman who was supposedly the mother of his first two children. She died on the voyage to America. J. Virgil Miller, in his Both Sides of the Ocean, suggests that the first wife of Johannes was a daughter of Christian Yoder and, after the death of his wife, Johannes married her sister, Magdalena Yoder, a common practice at that time.
By 1747 Johannes Gnaegi had land in Upper Bern Township, Berks Co., PA, which he held until 1763 when he sold to his neighbors, Jacob Kauffman and Christian Beiler. Johannes then moved to Bethel Twp. on the Little Swatara Creek, Dauphin Co, PA, which is now Lebanon Co., where he owned a mill and farms totaling over 400 acres.

Miller gives ca 1695 as date of birth, with place named Boehl (in the Palatine) and names the parents as Hans Gnaegi and Barbara Muller. Johannes' marriage to the first wife in England is shown as 1717, yet the first child was not born until 1740. It is my belief that a generation has been missed and the Palatine census lists need further exploration. The Hans Gnaegi in Alsace was probably a relative, but perhaps a grandfather instead of father?
Date of birth is shown as 1720, with place of birth Arrur, Canton Bern, Switzerland. I believe the author meant Aarau in Canton Aargau, as no place named "Arrur" has been located.
The abstract shows his name as "John" and mentions that the will was written in German. Date of 15 Dec. 1772, Bethel Twp.
Will of John Gneage (Hans Gnagi) Bethel Twp. 11/9/1772-12/15/1772 (English translation of original German): ...widow shall dwell with my children at the mill and plantation...til children marry, then each to get at marriage what the married brothers and sisters....son Christian by first wife has received his share of his mother's estate (15 pounds)...the shares of my children by my last wife of their mother's estate shall be also given to them (37 pounds 13 shillings 4 pence) and then, the residue shall be divided in equal shares...." Executors: brother-in-law Christian Yoder, widow Magdalena Gnaegi. Witnesses: Abraham Troxell, John Schrag.
