In 1788, Cornelius, along with several of his neighbors, namely David, John, and Dennis Mead, John Watson, Thomas Morton, and James Randolph moved to Crawford County, Pennsylvania where they settled and founded the city of Meadville. The Pioneer Outline History of Pennsylvania describes a May 1791 incident in which Cornelius was captured by two Indians but managed to escape. When he was 87 years old, Cornelius wrote a memior and the manuscript is in possession of the Pennsylvania Historical Society. He served as the first sheriff and first collector of the five counties surrounding Meadville. He was also an assessor and had to file his returns at Pittsburgh.3
