Corey Morris, Hero
On 14 AUG 2009 several young people were playing in the Missouri River near Huntsdale. When an 8 year old child fell into the dangerous current and was being swept away, 15 year old Corey Morris acted without hesitation. Corey leaped into the current and pushed his young friend to safety. Corey was then unable to escape from the current himself. He was found a short time later in shallow water.
He was pulled from the river and rescuers quickly began CPR. Sadly, it was not possible to revive the young hero. Corey gave his life to save another.
The M. Graham Clark Chapter of the SAR was proud to present the SAR Medal of Heroism to Corey in ceremonies held at Hickman High School, where Corey would have been a sophomore. Corey's parents and many friends were present to accept the award. As part of that ceremony, a tree and marker were placed in Corey's memory.
The chapter honor guard participated in the memorial ceremony. Compatriots Devenney, Merrill, Reynolds, and Lybarger were among those present.
