BANK ROBBERY OF SHAMBAUGH SAVINGS BANK
 Issue: Nov 20, 1921
On Thursday afternoon, November 19, 1921 four unmasked men entered the Shambaugh Savings Bank. It was close to 2 pm that cashier J. W. DENNY was in the front of the bank talking with WILLIAM C. PINKERTON on business matters, when a gruff voice accosted them and looking up they realized they were "covered" by a man with a gun. Assistant cashier Mrs. J. W. DENNY was inside the cage of the bank at the time. It turned out that two armed men were in the bank, one of whom proceeded to march Mr. WILLIAM C. PINKERTON and Mrs. DENNY into the rear of the bank and shut them inside the toilet, turning the key on the outside. He (the robber) then came back to assist the other robber, who was commanding Mr. DENNY to open the safe. "I'm so nervous, I'm afraid I can't open it," said the frightened cashier. "Open the safe dam you," said the man with the gun. Mr. DENNY tried the combination, which worked the first time and the safe was opened. Mr. DENNY was then marched to the rear of the bank and put into a dark closet, then the other two (WILLIAM C. PINKERTON and Mrs. DENNY) were placed in the same closet, which the robbers locked, leaving the key in the outside of the lock. The men then made quick work of gathering up cash in the drawer and the safe, $3,300 all told. Also about the same amount in Government Bonds in the safe, and joined a third comrade, who was on guard at the front door of the bank. The three then getting into a high-powered car standing in front, with the motor running and the fourth accomplice at the wheel. They made quick work of driving a block north to the central office corner, then west to Hwy. 71, where they turned north to Shambaugh. The car was a maroon colored Studebaker, bearing Ohio Plates and was soon doing 75 miles an hour, so the three men at engineering work on the new paving said as they saw the car whiz pass.
