Welcome to the Greene County Historical Society's webpage! Based in Springfield, Missouri, the Society was established in 1954 to foster and maintain an interest in the history of Springfield and Greene County. Today the Society meets this goal through programs, publications, projects, and other outreach activities.

The Society's webpage is designed to give visitors more information about the Society's work. It also serves as a tool for finding other websites with useful information about this region's history and culture.

Unfortunately, the Society's volunteers cannot help with reference questions. We suggest you visit our webpage on Local Libraries and Archives to find help with your research needs.

What's New

  • Join us for the Fall Meeting on Sunday, October 29, at 2:00 p.m.

State Historical Society of Missouri President Bob Priddy will provide a sneak preview of the Society’s $40 million headquarters (scheduled to open in 2019). Located in Columbia, this new facility will be a gathering place for researchers, allow for increased gallery space to showcase Missouri art and artists, and have room for public programming.

More details are available here.

  • Attention undergraduate and graduate students! The GCHS now offers a fellowship program to help underwrite expenses related to research projects related to the history, development, and/or care of the Missouri Ozarks. Complete details are available here.
  • Now's the time to join the Greene County Historical Society! The 2017 membership form is available online. Membership dues for 2017 are only $5.00 per household. Please take this opportunity to join us in preserving our region's unique history.
