Joseph Brewer1

M, b. 27 March 1783, d. 8 July 1846
  • Joseph Brewer was born on 27 March 1783 East Hartford, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1
  • His birth date is recorded in the family Bible, along with the death dates of the couple believed to be his parents, Daniel and Sarah Brewer.2
  • He married first East Hartford, Connecticut, on 30 March 1808 Jemima Forbes.2
  • Joseph Brewer married second probably Dansville, Livingston Co., New York, circa 1838 Nancy Sommers.2
  • Joseph Brewer appeared on the census in 1840 Sparta, Livingston Co., New York, as Joseph Brewer, with a household of 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60, 1 female under 5, 1 female 30-40.3
  • The following summary of the movements of Joseph Brewer is taken from Descendants of Thomas Brewer, Connecticut to Maine, 1682-1996 (pages 36-39): In April 1807 Joseph was admitted as a freeman according to East Hartford (Connecticut) town records. Perhaps he was the Joseph Brewer who advertised in The Connecticut Courant on 13 June 1808, "Thirty Shipping Horses will be kept through the Winter on reasonable terms. Good stables and attendance." He is in East Hartford on the 1810 census with three male children, one the correct age to be his eldest son. Two older males, 16-26, are in the houshold, perhaps apprentices or borders. In 1820 the family was still in East Hartford, but with six children. Only five have been identified, so there me be another child of Joseph's yet unidentified. In 1811, Joseph's wife Jemimna received an acre of land from the estate of her grandmother, "Distributed to Jemima, the Wife of Joseph Brewer." In 1819, Joseph acquired an additional two acres from Jemima's brother, Timothy Forbes, and on 5 June 1823, Jemima and Joseph sold him three acres for $40, listing their residence as Litchfield (Litchfield Co.), Connecticut. On 29 May 1818, the Town Clerk of East Hartford called Joseph Brewer a credible witness in attesting to the reduced circumstances of Daniel Brewer with regards to the later's Revolutionary War pension application. Daniel's statement that he has no kin to support him contradicts placing Joseph as Daniel's son. Perhaps Daniel lied in order to collect the pension, and Joseph's Bible does record Daniel and Sarah's birth dates.
Family tradition and several printed sources say that Joseph and Jemima went to Cortland, Cortland Co., New York with Chester and Nelson Spencer of East Hartford to start a papermill between 1820 and 1825. Joseph Brewer was thought to be a papermaker and papermaking was an industry which exisited in each of the towns inwhich he lived after 1825. In December 1825, Joseph Brewer purchased packing barrels, flannel and buttons from the store owned by William Randall in Cortland, New York. Nelson Spencer, the papermill owner, originally from East Hartford, bought Henry Brewer (Joseph's son) a hat in the same store in the same month. In March 1830, Adin Webb, Cortland sheriff, advertised a sale of the property owned by Nelson Spencer, indicating the papermill had closed. No Cortland County records show Joseph or Jemima as property owners at anytime. On the 1830 census, Joseph is found at New Hartford, Oneida County, New York (east of Cortland). New Hartford had paper manufacture among its industries. His daughter, Huldah, stated in her family Bible that she married Stephen B. Gaylord in New Hartford on 13 March 1830.
In 1832 the Brewers were in Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., New York, selling their son Henry, still of Cortland, a plot of land for $525 near the papermill andbordering the Erie Canal tow path. It is not known how or when this land was acquired or when the Brewers arrived at Seneca Falls. On 26 August 1834, Jemima died and was buried near the Erie Canal property in the Ovid Street Pioneers Cemetery. On 27 February 1836, Joseph sold his remaining Senaca Falls property to Chauncey Marshall, owner of the papermill there, stating his residence as Cohocton, Steuben County, New York. In 1836, Joseph purchased 80 acres of farmland in Cohocton but lost it to foreclosure in 1839. Apparently an unsuccessful attemp to farm. About this time, Joseph married his second wife, and they appear on the 1840 census in Dansville, Livingston Co., New York with two children. Dansville was another town with papermaking and book production industries. Joseph, Nancy (his second wife) and their daughter Joanna are buried in Dansville.4
  • He died on 8 July 1846 Dansville, Livingston Co., New York; when he is no longer found in the census records.5
  • He was buried Greenmount Cemetery, Dansville, Livingston Co., New York.6
