Thomas Brewer1,2
M, b. between 1655 and 1660, d. between 27 December 1742 and March 1743
- Charts: Thomas Brewer of Glastonbury, CT
- Thomas Brewer was born between 1655 and 1660 probably in New England. His parentage has not been determined.3
- Thomas Brewer and John Brewer, appear in the records of Sudbury, Massachusetts, along with that of John's stepfather, Henry Loker. On 11 Oct 1676, the three joined other inhabitants of Sudbury in signing a petition to the General Court seeking redress for Indian depredations that occured 21 April 1676. Thomas claimed loses of £10, John2 Brewer of £120, and Henry Loker of £100. There is no record that Thomas was a proprietor, land owner, town officer, or otherwise involved in the town affairs of Sudbury either before or after October 1676.
"If the Thomas of the 1676 Sudbury list was an unrecorded brother of John2 Brewer, it is unlikley that he was Thomas Brewer of Glastonbury. John1 Brewer died before 24 March 1647 when his widow remarried. To fit into this family, Thomas would have had to have been born before 1647, and probably before the first recorded birth in the family in 1642. He would thus have been 35-40 years old at his marriage to Sarah Keeney in 1682, and 95-99 years old at his death. Although neither situation is impossible, both seem improbable."4 - Thomas Brewer married Sarah Keeney Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut, on 18 January 1682/83 both of Glastonbury.5
- Thomas Brewer died between 27 December 1742 and March 1743; when he was living at Glastonbury and when his son Joseph received a lot in the distribution of Three Mile Lots in his (father's) right.3
- Little has been learned regarding Thomas Brewer's origins. Although he may be the Thomas Brewer mentioned in Sudbury, Massachusetts in 1676, there is no evidence, or reason to suspect that Thomas is a brother of John Brewer, an early settler of Sudbury. It is thought that Thomas may be a grandson of Thomas Brewer of Ipswich and Roxbury, perhaps an unrecorded son of John2 (Thomas1) and his wife Mary Whitmore. It has been claimed that Thomas came to Glastonbury Parish from Middletown, Connecticut, but no early deeds have been found for him there. When he first attempted to settle at Wethersfield he was rejected by a vote of the town (25 Dec 1682), but the vote was later cancelled and a month later he was married to his wife at Wethersfield, probably in the part later set off as Glastonbury. Thomas was chosen fence viewer at Wethersfield in March 1686, and again on 29 Dec 1693. He served in this position again in 1697."Thomas bruer" was one of those who petitioned in 1690/91 to be allowed to build a church on the east side of the Great River. He was listed as a head of one of the families in Glastonbury when the First Meeting House was built there in 1693. On 5 Sep 1710 he is called Thomas Brewer, Sr. of Glastonbury, when he was defended in an action of debt brought by Walter Harris in Hartford County Court. There are numerous deeds in the Glastonbury records involving Thomas, including those deeding property to his sons, Joseph (Jan 1718/19), Thomas, Junr. (Mar 1718/19) and Hezekiah (Jan 1719/20). In later years, Thomas apparently lived with his son, Alexander. On 24 Dec 1741, Thomas Brewer, Sr. and son Alexander released for £50 to Lt. Jonathan Hale and others their right and title to thirteen acres on which "they now dwell." Thomas last appears in a record on 27 Dec 1742, when he and his son Alexander, sold for £30, to Benjamin Brewer, nine acres in Glastonbury. No probate record for Thomas, or his wife Sarah, have been found.3
- Thomas Brewer and Thomas Brewer, have often been confused with each other in print.6

- He was at Ipswich and Roxbury, Massachusetts and then Hampton, New Hampshire where he was called "Ould Goodman Brewer," at his death. The name of his wife has never been learned.
