JOHN TRAVIS, the local historian, writes in one of his own articles, published in 1901:

In 1872, the writer wanted to start iron founding. He negotiated with Dr. Hardman for the old building near the Gauxholme Cotton Mill. Dr. Hardman died in February 1873 aged 85, but alterations continued. Iron was first smelted on 21st. June 1873 and business continued for about 10 years with varying success.
