Notes by John Travis, contemporary historian:

In 1860 Messrs. Marland Bros. of SUN VALE IRON WORKS, Walsden, built the Deanroyd weaving shed for about 300 looms, together with the usual accommodation of warehousing etc. and the firm now having gone thoroughly into the iron trade they made their own steam engine and shafting for the place. After the works were finished, and there being no tenant ready, it stood unoccupied for a considerable time, after which Messrs. Andrew Pilling and Sons, who had been tenants at the JOINT STOCK MILL, took the premises, and removed their machinery, and two or three years later during the cotton panic, purchased the place.

Deanroyd Mill Co. cotton manufacturers – Walsden

Case heard before Rev. Thomas Sutcliffe, and J. A. Ingham Esq. at Todmorden for employing 17 women, young persons, and children, after 12.30 on Saturday 9th July. Penalty £3 – Costs £3-9s-0d. Penalties in six cases, 11 withdrawn on payment of costs.

22nd December 1887

Deanroyd Mill Co. cotton manufacturers – Walsden. Case heard before J. A. Ingham, D. J. Crossley and J. Greenwood Esqs., at Todmorden for employing one child without having obtained a certificate of due attendance at school. Penalty – 5s fine and 12s costs.

14th November 1889

J. Watson, cotton manufacturer, Deanroyd Mill, Walsden. Case heard before D.J. Crossley, G. Sutcliffe and W. Ormerod Esqrs. At Todmorden Police Court for allowing a child to clean machinery whilst in motion. Penalty 5s – Costs 13s-6d.
