HENRY THOMAS (Bub) KEY
HENRY THOMAS (Bub) KEY born January 15, 1864 at Monoville, Smith Co. Tn.
His parents were James Marcus Key and Caphira Hemjuana Haynie. He was
married to Betty Smith, daughter of Jesse Smith and Melinda Wilkerson
of Cato. He was a farmer and businessman. He owned and operated the grist
mill on Peyton's Creek at Monoville for a number of years. In 1915 he was
elected to the state legistature. He served as a deacon and superintendent
of Peyton's Creek Baptist Church for over twenty-five years.

R.D. Brooks wrote the following in the Smith County History:

" In my thirty-four years in the ministry, I have never known a Baptist
Deacon to take such as stand against his wife-----From the Peyton Creek
Baptist Church minutes: Deacon Bub Key arose and said my wife Betty Key
has claimed sanctification or second blessing. She is present, ask her.
The moderator and pastor, Rufus B. Davis, ask her and she said "Yes".
Her husband Deacon Bub Key made a motion to exclude her and the motion
carried. Will we ever see his likeness as a Baptist Deacon again? "

Henry Thomas Key died Jan.17, 1926 and was buried in Hines Cemetery at
Monoville. He was my greatgrandfather.
