James Marcus Key & Caphira Hemjuana Haynie Key
James Marcus Key (16 Dec 1836-14 Apr 1922) was born, reared and died in Smith
County, TN, on land received from the Revolutionary War land grant of his
grandfather, Jonathan Key. His grandmother was Mary Davis. Jim Key was the
son of Mary (Polly) Stovall and Logan Davis Key, a veteran of the War of
1812. Polly's parents were Revolutionary War veteran Bartholomew Stovall
and his wife, Sarah Nancy Turner.
James Marcus Key fought in the Civil War with the 23rd Tennessee Infantry,
CSA. His brother, Henry, also with the 23rd, was killed at the Battle of
Chickamauga.
James Marcus Key and Caphira Hemjuana Haynie were married 8 Sep 1859, in
Smith County. Caphira was the daughter of Milton and Elizabeth Haynie and
the granddaughter of Elijah Marcus Haynie, veteran of the War of 1812, and
Clarkey Beasley. Elijah's parents were Revolutionary War veteran William
Haynie and his wife, Ann Bradley. Clarkey's parents were Revolutionary War
veteran Isham Beasley and his wife, Mary (Polly) Andrews. All lived most of
their lives and died in Smith County.
