Paul, I am looking for Benjamin Surratt's ancestory. He had a son named Arthur Surratt. Arthur was born in 1898. Arthur had a son named Ronald Surratt that was born in 1945.
Would you know which line of Surratt's that he is from? His grandfather ( Benjamin Surratt) is buried in Water Vally Cemetery in Missouri.
Benjamin came from North Carolina. If you have any information it would be greatly appreciated.
Please send email to: Linda Pieniozek [email protected]

Subj: B. C. Surett and son, Taylor
On a recent trip to Pontotoc County, MS. I went in search of the cemetery where Benjamin Cruso Surett is buried, Mt. Liberty Baptist Church. I found it and his headstone. Next to him is Taylor Surett, I assume it is his son, with the dates of b. Nov 10, 1874 d. Nov 3, 1900.
B. C. and his brother Crockett lived in this county at least 1890 until 1894 because their children are on the school censuses there.
The children of Crockett are listed as living with D. C. Suratt Range 4, Township 11.
B.C. Suratt was in Range 2, Township 11 according to the book.

Nell,
You were not in "Ponotoc Co.", MS. See: Benjamin Caruso is buried in Lafayete Co., MS.
The son you found is William "Taylor" SURRATT, 1st s/o B.C.

Hi
I hope this email gets to you.
I am a descendant of Samuel Sarrett who married Nancy Pennington. Last winter I just started on my grandmothers family name.
I did not find this on your website:
1880 Spelled Sarat, living in Lamar county Alabama, Betts Beat, District 133 Page 6. Ancestry has the page enumeration incorrect. Family Search has the correct one, I will not even attempt the deciphering of the names. I do see Loo Ella , my GGmother listed.
1900 Benj. C. Surrett is in Calhoun county Mississippi Beat 3 District 13, page 32 with 8 children, I do not see my ggrandmothers name listed, so perhaps she has married. I am still looking for her and the Palmer she married which she is listed as a widow in 1910.
1910 Benjamin Caruso Sarrett was living in Beat 4, Lafayette county MS District 32. He is at the bottom of page 10 of 27 with his named spelled as Ceretti. His age listed as 67 and Georgia as 55. How I know this to be correct, on the next page is my ggmother Ella Palmer listed as daughter and my grandmother, Doris Palmer.
There is another Surrett/Sarrett family connection, Nannie Surrett married a Blaker, cousin to the Blaker that my gmother Doris Palmer married.
If this email goes through I will find what connection that is if you wish.
I live in Lamar county Alabama but was born in Lafayette county Mississippi. So these areas except for Calhoun county Mississippi are very familiar to me.
I hope this will be of help to you

SURRATT, James "Junius"
1st E-Mail: Dated: Thu, 17 Jul 2008 11:57 am
Hello Paul,
In the course of doing amateur online genealogy research, my brother and I found your page about the Surratt/Surrett family located here:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~prsjr/families/ms/lafayette/fgs1301.htm
My grandfather is Hugh M. Surratt, the son of James "Junie" Surratt and the women that we knew as "Ma Bettie."
This website was a most interesting find for us because, unfortunately, my grandfather, Hugh M., can't remember much about his father, James. The only thing that he CAN remember is that his father's name was Junius. Indeed, Hugh M. and his wife Merrye we so certain that Hugh M's father's name was Junius, that they named my father---Junius A. Surratt---after him!
Everything else on the listing comports with what we know about the family, so we're sure that this is the correct listing. How sure are you that James "Junie" Surratt's first name was actually "James" and not "Junius?"
Since my brother and I know very little about the Surratt family history, I'd believe that Junius was actually James, and that the "Junius" name got passed down to my father fortuitously, perhaps on the basis of James' nickname. Or possibly there was a transcription error that transformed Junius into James on official records.
Do you have any thoughts about this?
Thanks!
Andrea L. Surratt [email protected]
Andrea, Thanks for the E-Mail
Thanks for the Corruction!
I'm the one that listed the "James" given name, due to the 1900 Census, it should be Junius.
Your Great-Grandfather "Junius/Jimmie/Junie/June" SURRATT living in Oxford, Lafayette Co., MS.
Was age 14yrs, living with 6 Siblings & Widowed Mother in 1900 Census as "Jimmie S."
Was age 24yrs, living with 5 Siblings & Widowed Mother in 1910 Census as "Junie" (listed Divoriced!)
Was age 35yrs, living with Wife "Bettie" & "Adopted" Son named "Hue" M. in 1920 Census as "J.S.
Was age 45yrs, living with Wife "Betty" & 2 Ch. Hugh M. & Elizabeth in 1930 as "June"
Junius/Junie could Read & Write
1910 Occupation: Own, Farmer Home Farm
1920 Occupation: Own, Real Estate Labor
1930 Occupation: Rent, Salesman
You should be able to Call/Write to: Vital Records at Lafayette Co., MS. for Marriage Certificate of Junius & Bettie to get her Maiden name & Date.
Your Grandfather Hugh M. SURRATT, was "Adopted" per 1920 Census!
We don't have any more info on this family since 1930 Census!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes, my great-grandfather is "Junius Surratt"---I was able to confirm this with my grandfather a few days ago. Junius was married to Bettie (or Betty) Starns.
My grandfather, Hugh M. is adopted? How certain is this record?
This is shocking news, and I am certain that my grandfather knows nothing about it! I'd be interested in any more information you have on this (or, any leads you can give me so I can try to investigate on my own).
Unfortunatley, we don't have any information on what happened to Rufus, Robert Lee, or David Crocket Jr.
The rest of the lineage (descendants of Hugh M. Surratt), is as follows:
Hugh M. Surratt married Merrye Seay (b. 1920 d. 2002). Hugh and Merrye have two children:
Hugh M. Surratt, Jr. (b. 1950) and
Junius A. Surratt (b. 1951)
Junius A. Surratt married Lorraine Lenart (b. 1951) Junius and Lorraine have two children:
Andrea L. Surratt (b. 1981) <--Me! and
Hugh P. Surratt (b. 1984).
Hugh M. Surratt, Jr. is not married and does not have any children.
Thanks again for your reply, and also thanks for your helpful website!
Andrea L. Surratt [email protected]
Andrea,
Thanks for the Info. will take me few days to correct and Up-Load your Page
The "Adoption" theroy is from the 1920 Census (See Attached)
J.S. & Bettie did NOT know the birth State of Hue H. SURRETT which I assume to be "Adopted", but viewing this page today I notice the Enumerberator used a lot of birth states as "US."
In the 1930 Census, Hugh M. SURRATT, age 12yrs listed both parents born MS.
In Nell's research (above) of 2002, she claims on the Death Certificate #5964 list "JAMES" SURRATT, the informat on the D.C. was his his Wife Mrs. Betty (Sterns) SURRATT.
Let me know what you or your Grandfather thinks.

Hi Paul,
Thanks again for the information. I can't tell you how exciting this has been for us--- until a few days ago, we always hit a genealogical roadblock when we tried to go back farther than my grandfather's generation, and now we're able to trace our history back 10 generations (and connect ourselves to Mary Jenkins Surratt---something we had always wondered about). I can't imagine how much work it is for you to maintain your website and correspond with people like me looking for information, but I'd just like to tell you how grateful I am that you've done this. Of course, if you think I can help in any way with your project, be sure to let me know.
At any rate, I just spoke with my father and grandfather, and we're positive that Hugh M. Surratt was not adopted and was born to Junius and Bettie in Oxford, MS.
Although it's not certain yet, I think I'll be going to Oxford, MS with my dad and grandfather at the end of this summer. While I'm there, I'll try to see if I can figure out what happened to Junius' siblings (Rufus, Robert Lee, and David Crockett, Jr.); if I uncover anything, I'll be sure to let you know.
One missing piece about which I am curious is Junius' first marriage (he was married and divorced before he married Bettie). I'm pretty sure this marriage produced offspring because my grandfather has spoken about having a half-brother named "Curl" (not sure if that's a nickname). If I can uncover anything about this, I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
Andrea L. Surratt [email protected]
Andrea,
Glad, I could help!
You might want to get a copy of James/Junius SURRATT, Death Certificate #5964 states your GreatGrand Father's name was JAMES.
You should be abel to get it at County Court House, in Okford, MS.
If you goto any of the grave sites, you might want to take a camera and take photos of all the SURRATT family Headstones.

Paul,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, they appear as residents of the Poor House in Monroe Co. Possibly her husband left her without support and she had no choice. They may have married in Alabama as I understand they traveled frequently to Alabama in those days. Addie May's mother was supposedly Chickasaw Indian, but I have no proof. Her name was Adosia Johnston and she married Robert S. Kelso. Addie May married 2nd. George Lee Springer, a widower, in Chickasaw Co., Miss. in 1901 and they removed to Texas after 1910.
Her daughters, Mollie and Ida Saret, married brothers, William and Hardy Parker, respectively, and lived in Liberty County, Texas [Rusk Co., or Liberty Co.] their entire lives.
The girls as well as their mother were very pretty women, petite with dark hair and eyes.
If you should ever find the elusive William Taylor Saret/Sarrette, I would appreciate your letting me know. Mary

On the [See:] 1860 Tippah County, Ms. census, the family of John Surratt had a daughter Winnie, age 6 born Ms. She would be mighty young to have a son born by 1866, but these things did happen. Also dates of birth are sometimes noted wrong. Look for them on the census and see if this McBride family had a 4 year old in 1870. This is the only Winnie I know about. Hope this helps.

Subject: William F. Mitchell Pontotoc Co. MS
I am still seeking the parents of my brick wall, William Franklin Mitchell of MS. Thanks to Mrs. Hazel Neet of Pontotoc Co. MS, I am now in possession of a copy of his obituary. I would like to pass along some of this information in the hope that someone, some day, will make a connection.
William Franklin Mitchell was born 19 Feb 1845. According to his obituary, he was born in Tippah Co. MS. His entry on the 1880 census of Lee Co. MS confirms MS as his place of birth. His death certificate says TN. For now, I am going with MS. The Lee Co. census also indicated his father was born in GA but the GA was in parentheses as if it was uncertain. His mother was born in TN. The obituary also stated he enlisted in the Civil War at Gibson, TN, another TN connection.
In 1872 he married Eliza Catherine BOX and they had eight children together. They married in Tippah Co. but later moved to Pontotoc Co. MS. Eliza died in 1918 and William in 1936. William is buried in Locust Hill (Baptist Church) Cemetery, Pontotoc Co. MS. The known children of William and Eliza:
1. William Polk Mitchell b. 1877 m. Mollie Elizabeth Surratt
2. James Perry Mitchell b. 1879 m. Evie Lena McCraw
3. Roberta Ellen Mitchell b. 1886 (my gr-gr-grandmother) m. Samuel Nichols
4. Joseph Ernest Whitten Mitchell b. 1892 m. Emma Earle Davis
5. Nany Annie Bell Mitchell b. 1889 m. Harvey Pope
6. Mary Lou Jenie Mitchell b. 1883 m. Andrew Perry Camp
I have additional information on their descendants if anyone is interested. Thanks in advance.

Michael,
I am interested in Surratt connections anywhere. One Catherine Surratt was supposed to have been married to John Lindsey Bolton in McNairy County, Tn. Does this connect with your family? John Lindsey Bolton was supposed to be the son of Joseph Bolton and Elizabeth Rebecca Skillman.

Subject: Looking for contacts. Surname: Bolton, Dillard, Surratt, Watkins, Yielding I'm looking for contacts on any of these families. The Boltons came from Ala. The Dillards I'm interested in came from Tn. There is another Dillard line that came from S.C. I'M not sure where the Surratts came from. The Watkins came from Ala. And Yieldings were in Ala. All of these families settled in Pontotoc or Union County in the early 1800's. Please mail me if you can help.

Hey Paul, my name is David Bolton. I live in Prairieville La. My great grandfather, Tom Bolton, b.feb/07/1858; d. jan/29/1924, was married to Cordelia Surratt, b.feb/29/1864; d. jan/25/1946. They are in census from 1900 Pontotoc County, Ms. and 1910-1920 Union County, Ms. I am pretty sure that Cordelia, Sarah, and Ella Surratt were sisters. Sarah Surratt married George Kelly, they are in 1910 Pontotoc County, Ms. census. I have Family Tree Maker software so I can except GEDCOM files. I'm sorry I don't have information to share with you, only a request for your help. It will be greatly appreciated. Thank You, David Bolton, E-Mail: [email protected]

My GGrandmother was Cordelia Surratt b.Feb,29,1864, probably in Ms.- d. Jan,25,1946 in New Albany, Ms. She married Tom Bolton Dec 1886 in Pontotoc Co., Ms. Best I can tell, her mother (Sarah J(ane?) remarried a Lard/Lord/Laird and was a widower shortly thereafter. They were in the Pontotoc County, Ms area around 1880 to 1920. There were at least three other girls in this family, Sarah, Callie and Ella. Any info on this line will be appreciated.
