Land Records - Moravian Land Grant

The information below was researched, compiled and provided by Evelyn Baker. Most of the material is a transcription of original handwritten papers of land transactions and journal notes of Nathan Blickensderfer, who was the Real Estate Agent for the 'Hospitality' tract. These original documents were loaned to Evelyn for transcribing on this PAGenWeb site by Robert William Blickensderfer (Bob) of Conneaut, Ohio, who is a great grandson of Nathan. The end of the article below contains a brief family history of the Blickensderfer family. Other sources for this article included the book Blackcoats Among the Delaware by Earl P. Olmstead (available in the Erie County Blasco Library), Erie County Springfield Township tax records of 1823, and various Pennsylvania maps before 1800 through 1855 from Evelyn's personal collection. During the mid 9th Century, in two small European countries of Bohema and Moravia, 2 missionaries, CYRIL and METHODIOUS, were translating the Bible into a common language. Reformation was strengthening against doctrines of the Roman clergy.
1415 - John HUS, burned at stake, accused of heresy. He was a Rector of the University of Prague, Professor of Philosphy, and a spirited leader of the protestant reformation, and the evolution of the Moravian Society.
1457 - The Moravian Church became officially known as Unitas Fratrum, often called the United Brethern.
1547 - Bitter religious persecution led to their movement through Europe.
1735 - The Moravians fled to America.
1740 - They settled on the estate of George WHITEFIELD in Pennsylvania.
1741 - They purchased 500 acres to establish Bethleham, Pennsylvania, and paid all their own expenses.
1742 - Soon after the first land purchase, they bought 5,000 acres from of the Barony of Nazareth. Bethleham & Nazareth became closely linked in agriculture and industry. Other mission settlements were purchased, all were frontier centers to spread the Gospel to the Native American Indians.
1781 - April 17, Pennsylvania State granted 2 tracts of land, 2,500 acres each, to " The Society of the United Brethren" ( known as the Moravians ). They selected 2,875 acres within the limits of LeBoeuf township, and 2,797 in Springfield and Conneaut, extending into what is now Ohio, paying for the extra 672 acres in money.
The LeBoeuf land was called "Good Luck"
The Springfield, Conneaut Creek, & Ohio land was called "Hospitality".
For the next 69 years, the missionaries were often the first white settlers on the frontier. They embraced all tribes, but most of their work was with the Delawares. They baptised, bestowed Christian names, and performed marriages among the Indians. Natives called them "Blackcoats" and readily accepted their humble ways. The Indians taught the Blackcoats the skill of the hunt, communial planting of crops, baking food in hot ashes, and their migratory techniques. Indians were fond of the fatty meat of wild white swans, found in this area, and tasted like that of the bear.
From Europe, the Moravians brought with them, honeybees, valued for their honey and polination of crops. They kept voluminous daily diaries, mostly written in German script, that are esteemed today as some of the earliest written records of the American wilderness.
Genealogists should be watchful of new documents still being translated and not yet completed for release.

1849 - WILLIAM MILES, Esq., of Union, is their first active land agent, due to ill health, he was succeeded by his son, Judge JAMES MILES. The Judge became manager of the "Hospitality" tract and NATHAN BLICKENSDERFER became the Real Estate Agent. JOHN WOOD, of Waterford, became manager for the "Good Luck" lands.

1859 - January 3, CHARLES WYMAN leases Lot # 26 of the Moravian Land Grant Hospitality Tract, situated in Springfield Township, Erie Co., Pa. He paid $125 for one year. The hand written contract reads in part, " to farm in good workmanlike manner , commit no waste and to render up peaceable possession of the same. May lay up rails necessary to secure crops to an extent not exceeding 500 rails for which he shall be allowed $1 per hundred when laid up in fence. The rails to be made as far as possible out of fallen timber before any standing trees are cut. The said WYMAN also to pay all taxes assessed against said land and payable during the term of this lease".

E. corner of lands deeded to ALBERT CHILDS, thence 89 ½ ° north along the middle of said road 77 and 77/100ths perches to lands of HUGH THOMPSON, thence south 80 and 92/100ths perches to the S. E. corner of said BLICKENSDERFER'S land, thence north 89 ¾ ° , etc., containing 39 28/100ths acres, more or less.

1852 - (circa) BLICKENSDERFER School was one room, built of timbers with a rough hewn wood floor. It was located near the banks of Lake Erie, on the southwest corner of a bridal path, that became Lake and Rudd Roads until June 1988. Then 3,000 acres in that locale was sold to the Pa. Conservancy, then turned over to the Game Commission, to stock, feed, and manage the wildlife. At the dawn of the 21st century, the land has been returned to its natural state.

BLICKENSDERFER LINEAGE
NATHAN BLICKENSDERFER was born April 13, 1823 in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, son of JACOB and REGINA KREITER BLICKENSDERFER. NATHAN's elementary education was at a Moravian school in Lancaster Co., Pa., then on to the Academy of Beck & Rickert at Lititz, Pa. He studied law at the office of JOSEPH C. HANCE, New Phildelphia, Ohio and was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of Ohio in Madison County on April 23, 1849. In the fall of that year, he removed to Erie Co., Pa. and was devoted to farming and dealing in real estate. In 1844, he married CATHARINE MARY CANFIELD b. March 19, 1826 d. September 22, 1892.
They had 6 children:
