Ken Williams        12 September 1998
My Uncle John WILLIAMS emigrated to Canada c.1920.  His family visited my father, Daniel WILLIAMS and my sister Kathleen KILSHAW, but as I was serving in the RAF overseas at the time,  I did not meet them.  After my sister died, my brother in law destroyed her address book. A stepbrother of John named Roderick WILLIAMS b. 1919, from Tyddyn Ucha Bach, Abergele, North Wales, emigrated to Canada c.1936 and went originally to John WILLIAMS. Roderick then went to work on a farm in Woodstock.  When the owners of the farm died, they left the farm to Roderick who continued farming it until he died on c.1993. A friend in Canada checked the phone books and discovered the last listing of Roderick was 1988-89 and the address was Watson Settlement. On the same listing was an Evan WILLIAMS and a John WILLIAMS but not the same number as Roderick.  These two were also in the 1990-91 listing. In the 1992 listing JOHN WILLIAMS appeared alone. In the 1996 listing there was only a John E. WILLIAMS but in the 1997-98 listing there were no WILLIAMS' in Watson Settlement.  As I am in England, any information on any of these WILLIAMS'S or their families would be appreciated. I understand there are a lot of Williams's in the county. Could someone tell me what is meant by WATSON SETTLEMENT please.

CUMMINS - I am searching for any background, origins, history, the like, for the family of my great-great grandfather, SIMON CUMMINS , son of Matthew Cummins, (sometimes spelled Commins), and Margaret Somers, who were natives of County Carlow, Ireland, having settled in St. Stephen, around 1849 . Simon was born in County Carlow, Ireland, abt. 1820.  He emigrated to New Brunswick in 1852, first settling in St. Stephen, and later, in response to Bishop Sweeney's call for enterprising settlers, moved on to Johnville.  He was very prominent in the early history of this town.

Simon was married to MARY CHAPMAN, (sometimes spelled CHATMAN), whose ancestors I am also searching.  She was the daughter of SIMON CHAPMAN, and (?) MURPHY, also from County Carlow. Their children were Matthew, Margaret, Annie, Johanna, (Johanna was my great grandmother.) Mary Elizabeth, Bridget, Simon  Jr., Catherine, and Christopher Peter. Simon died in Johnville, January 18, 1894, his wife, Mary, March 29, 1908.

My research source, to date, has mainly been the extensive history of Johnville families, An Honourable Independence, The Irish Catholic Settlers of Johnville, Carleton County, New Brunswick, written by William Patrick Kilfoil and his daughter, Mary Kilfoil McDevitt.  I have found this book to be of immeasurable value.  I am now seeking to expand further, upon the history of my own family, in particular, especially in terms of their ancestral backgrounds, history, and heritage in Ireland.

Of particular importance to me, also, would be evidence of my grandmother, MARY E., born February 27, 1884, in Plymouth (?), the daughter of JOHANNA CUMMINS (baptized in Charlotte County), and JOHN KELLY ( Richmond Parish, in Johnville).

Johanna and John married in Johnville May 21, 1883. (Witnesses: James Kelly and Annie Cummins)  Mary McDevitt is unaware of any child of this marriage.  Yet, there must be a record of Mary E. somewhere.  Johanna, her mother, died when my grandmother was two years old, and it is said (my own dim recollections of family conversations) that Mary was raised by Johanna's siblings, several of whom moved to Washburn, Maine, after the marriage of Catherine Cummins to Dr. Harry McManus.

John, (born July 2, 1854, probably in the Woodstock area), whose history is also very scant, moved to Butte, Montana, after Johanna's death.  He died in 1935 in Montana.

He married Jane Flemming on 22 Jun 1825 at the Woodstock Anglican Church.  Are any of the cemeteries in that area on microfilm?   I'm looking for Patrick's father, John, also a marriage record for his sister Isabelle. Patrick and Jane had 11 children Jane, James, Katherine, Mary Rebecca, Robert, John Carleton, William Henry, Andrew, Thomas, Isabella Scott and Elizabeth M.  Are there ships passengers lists for that time period?
