Newingham, who is blind and infirm to be kept by Joshua Newningham for twelve
months at 16L agreeable to a report of Samuel Shephard,
who ___
his keeping to the lowest bidder.
On Feb
10, 1834, Joshua made an application for a pension in Marion County, Indiana,
aged 78 years old. He stated he served in War and
was
living
in Queen Anne County, MD at time of enlistment. His pension states
he has lived in the county for about 20 years coming here
from
Kentucky.
The pension is started as John Newman, but John is marked out and Joshua
written in.

In the
probate court of said county, the same being a court of record, on the tenth
day of February 1834 at the term of said Court begun and held at
the
courthouse
in Indianapolis in open court personally appeared Joshua Newnam a resident
of Brown Township in Hendricks County in said state,
aged
seventy
eight years, who being in open court first duly sworn doth on his oath make
the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the
provisions
made
by the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832, to wit; that he entered the
army of the United States but at what precise time or in what year he
cannot
recollect, but knows that it was previous to the battle of Saratoga and the
surrender of the British army under General Burgoyne. That he
entered
the service
and during the wat of the Revolution with Captain William Faulkerner or Forknor
of the Maryland line as he believes thought it may have
been
of the
Delaware line. The number of the regiment into which he enlisted he
cannot recollect but he knows that said Captain Faulkner remained
his
commanding
officer until he was discharged. William Clark the Lieutenant of the
Company to which he belonged and Bixley Newnam the Ensign the
corps
to which
he belonged was only about sixty strong and he cannot say who were his commanding
officers other then is above stated except the one

Hawkins appeared to have on occasional command of said cops and orders were
he believes received from or through him. That at the time
he
entered
the service he lived in Queen Anne County, Maryland that he served for fifteen
months immediately after his entering the army although
the
period
for which he first entered the army was only sixty day or at least he was
told at the time. That during said term of fifteen months he served
as a
private
and was stationed at a place called the Big Quarter belonging to Mathew Tilghman
or Tilman. That the duty performed by the corps to which
he
belonged
consisted entirely of operations in ____ to the Tories and except one slight
___ ____ _____ ring persons from the Toried he was in no
battle
but in
the duty above named he and the corps to which he belonged was engaged
___ or rather mighty for the duty. Was generally discharged at
night.
He was regularly discharged and received a written discharge from his
said Captain but not supposing it to be of any value he long since lost
the
same
and he knows of no person living by whom he can prove said facts and
services.
He hereby
relinquishes any claim whatsoever to any pension or annuity except the present
and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of
any
agency
in any state.

Hawkins, a clergyman residing in Marion County near said applicant and John
W. Reding also residing in the same county & near said
applicant
certify
that we are well acquainted with said applicant Joshua Newnam who has subscribed
and sworn to the above declaration and that we have been
acquainted
with him the former for thirty years and the latter for upwards of twenty
years that he was ____ ____ understood in the neighborhood in which
he
has resided,
first in Kentucky and lately where he now resides and reputed and believed
to have been a soldier of the Revolution and that we concur in
that
opinion.
We also certify that we believe him to be seventy eight years of age
as he states.

said court do hereby declare their opinion after the investigation of the
matter and after purring the interrogations ____ by the War Department that
the
above
named applicant was a Revolutionary soldier and served as he states and the
court further certifies that it appears to them that Jameson Hawkins who
has signed
the preceding certificate is a clergyman resides at Marion County and that
John W. Reding who has also signed same is a resident of said county
and a
credible person & that their statement is entitled to
credit.

contains the original proceedings of the said Court in the matter of the
application
of Joshua Newnam for a pension.
