125. MARY JANE PERKINS^72,105,106 was born on 14 August 1826 in prob Logan County, Kentucky.^107,108 She died on 30 January 1918 at the age of 91 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.¹⁰⁷

Letter from Joseph B. Haden to Mary Alice (Haden) Womack dated Feb 27, 1936:
"My mother, who was a Perkins before she married my father, was also born in Kentucky, though her parents, John Perkins and his wife, who was a Dunlavy, were born and brought up in Richmond, Virginia. Your great-great-grandfather Perkins was a merchant in Richmond about 150 years ago."

In 1900, Mary J. Haden was still living in her own home across the side street from her son Joseph B. Two of the children of her deceased daughter Virginia Jones were living with her. Emma Jones was born May 1886, age 20 - her father b. NC and her mother b. in MO. Horace Jones, was 14, b. Jun 1886 and listed "at school".

Mrs. M . J. Haden died at 9:20 o'clock Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Geo. Richards. Mrs. Richards has been caring for her for some months since her daughter became physically unable to look after her needs. For the past ten years or more she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. B. F. Blakeney.
The body was held here until this morning at 9 o'clock, when it was taken to Ladonia for burial. The trip was made overland in cars, under the direction of the Halsell-Caldwell Company.
Mrs. Haden was nearly ninety-two years of age. She had long been a resident of this county, having lived at Ladonia since about 1863, until she came here some ten years ago. She was a native of Kentucky.
She was the mother of five children who survive her, namely, J. H. Haden and Mrs. B. F. Blakeney of this city, J. C. Haden of Durant, J. B. Haden of Ladonia and Mrs. J. A. Pickens of Quanah. All the children were here to attend the funeral.
Mrs. Haden was a good mother and wife, a good woman and did her part in life's work. She was a member of the Baptist church, and Rev. Boyet of Durant came t conduct the funeral service, having known her well.
The funeral took place at the Baptist church in Ladonia this afternoon.

MARY JANE PERKINS and WILLIAM FRANKLIN HADEN were married on 16 December 1845 in Wilson's Creek, Greene County, Missouri.^99,109 WILLIAM FRANKLIN HADEN^{79,86,110,111,112,113,114,115,116,117,118,119}, son of JOHN MOSELEY HADEN and MARGARET CALDWELL JACKSON, was born on 30 September 1817 in Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky.^{107,108,120,121} He served in the military in 1864 at Jailed at Fort Smith, AR in Civil War.¹²² He died on 8 September 1880 at the age of 62 in Ladonia, Fannin County, Texas.¹⁰⁷

If the dates for John Haden's death and the birth of William Franklin are correct, W. F. was born about seven months posthumously. Family writings also give the year of 1817.

Logan County Court Records, Book 7 p.241 April Term 1820: Guardian of William and his brother John was first their uncle Joseph.

Logan Co Deed Book L, p.244f 5 Jan 1822 [Actually 1821]. The heirs of Wm Haden decd, settled with Samuel who had land laid off by his father & surveyed, but title had not been made. Samuel had also received personal property and negroes. He gives up further claims to the estate & pays the heirs $500 for all property and the 271 acres of land adjoing William Haden Jr & Clark's Military Survey on the Black Lick fork of the Gasper River. Signees are: James Haden, Thomas Procter for himself and as guardian of the children of his former wife Sally Haden decd, William Whitsitt for himself and as guardian of the children of his late wife Milly Haden dec'd, William Haden, Lowry Bishop as guardian of Benjamin R. Haden a grandson, Joseph Haden, Joseph Haden as guardian for John & William sons of John Haden decd, William Porter, Nancy J. Porter, John Wilson, Polly Wilson, Sally Haden, guardian for Sally Haden her daughter. Nancy J. Porter & Polly Wilson relinquished their Dower in Butler Co on Jan 30. [Although this deed was dated 1822, the Dower release was 1821, which I believe is the correct year based on other events.] Acknowledged by Spencer Curd, Logan Co clerk on 3 Mar 1823.
NOTE: William Whitsitt's Milly is referred to as his LATE wife, while Thomas Procter's Sally is his FORMER wife - Thomas has remarried, William probably has not.

Logan County Court Records, Book 8 p.409 Dec Term 1828: After Joseph's death guardian became Cardwell Breathitt at the written instructions of Sam'l D. Sublett & Margaret C. Sublett (his mother). The Subletts are found in the 1830 Census in Logan County, KY, with male children of an age to possibly be John and William F. and also several younger children.

I have a copy of a page from a Logan Co tax book, undated. Cardwell Breathitt paid the tas for Jno. M. Haden's Heirs, 139 acres of 3rd rate land, on Gasper River in Logan Co.

p.288 In relation to guardianship for John & Wm Haden, I make the following report. Two Negroes, Green & _____ put in the hand of Mr. Sublett for the maintenance of the children for year 1829. In a suit in chancery in the Logan Circuit Court amongst the heirs of Wm Haden deceased there was allotted to the said heirs of J. M. Haden the sum of $1287.61. Suit is now in the court of appeals and a Super sedus has been granted, result cannot now be stated. Some Negroes had been sold in that suit & notes to the amount of $951.76 came into my hands. It is uncertain whether the said heirs will be entitled to the procedds as that depends upon the opinion of the court of appeals. Should the case be affirmed that amount will be in my hands. Of the other $335.85 as in the hands of the Admin do bonos non, Wm Haden, he has paid me which will also be in my hands in case the Judgement is affirmed. There was also a decree in Logan Circuit Court agt. Jas. Haden admr for the Sum of $560.09 that is enjoined by Jefferson Haden and no part of it has been recorded. Sworn to according to law. Card. Found possible earlier marriages for Wm F: Warren County KY, Wm Haden married Elizabeth J. Proctor on 11 September 1837, solemnized by D. L. Mansfield, also Wm. F. Hayden to Mary A. Gaines on June 13, 1837, solemnized by D. L. Mansfield. The marriage to Elizabeth J. Proctor is also recorded in Logan County KY and is another William Haden, possible son of Samuel H. Haden of Simpson Co. Young William Haden and wife Elizabeth appear in the 1850 Logan Co Census, The two Williams of so near the same age would have been 1st cousins. An earlier marriage would explain the two girls listed in 1850 & 1860 Censuses. Note that the older girl in the census records may have been named "Elizabeth". The younger of the two girls from the first marriage married Sydney Hudson in Missouri - they moved to Texas with the rest of the family. Later the Hudsons relocated to Colorado - a descendant believes the marriage to Mary A. Gaines to be the correct one. I have never located the Elizabeth/Margaret after the 1860 Census. Most of the marriage records from that area of Missouri were destroyed in the Civil War.

Sandi Gorin gives date of 10 June 1837 instead of 13 June - possibly the Bond date, for marriage to Mary M. A. Gaines. States Mary was the daughter of Elizabeth B. Gaines.

In 1840 Logan County KY Census: William Hadon 1 m age 20-30 (he was 23); 1 f under 5, 1 f age 15-20. (This adds more to the theory he had had an earlier marriage and two small daughters when he married Mary Jane Perkins. However, this could also be the William Haden found still living in Logan County in 1850 when William F. was in Greene Co MO.) No William Haden appears in the 1840 Warren Co Census Index but I have not yet examined that census for myself and traditionally the daughter that married Sydney Hudson was born in Bowling Green, Warren Co. It is also quite possible that the family had set out for Missouri before 1840 as the following deeds indicate the selling of the Logan Co lands.

This Indenture made and entered into this 17th day of January in the year 1839 between William F. Haden of the county of Logan & State of Kentucky of the one part and Samuel D. Sublett of the county and state aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth That the said William F. Haden for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred dollars currant money of Kentucky to him in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained & sold and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and confirm to the said Samuel D. Sublett his heirs and assigns all and every part of the patrimonial and undivided interest in and to two hundred acres of land of which John M. Haden died seized & possessed on which the said Samuel D. Sublett now lives the same situate and lying on the waters of Gaspers River in the count & state aforesaid Except fifteen acres of said Land which the said William F. Haden hath sold and conveyed unto Elijah Callis. Together with all and Singular the premises thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining to Have and To Hold the land hereby conveyed with appurtenances unto the said Samuel D. Sublett of the County of Logan and State of Kentucky for and in consideration of the sum of $1 to me in hand paid, and the further consideration of the Natural affection I bear to my Daughter in law Mary Jane Haden, my grandchildren Elizabeth Margaret Haden, Sarah Mildred Haden and Mayetta Clay Haden of Jasper County in State of Missouri [the first two girls are the daughters of the first wife; Jasper Co is where William F.'s brother John was also living] I hereby give and grant to my said Daughter in law, and grandchildren and any other children my said Daughter in law may have the sum of Two hundred dollars to be vested in the hands of Trustee herein named and by him vested in Cattle and their future increase to be held and used by said trustee for the sole use and benefit of my said Daughter in law and my said grandchildren forever, and the use and benefit of no other person or persons whatsoever as it is expressly and agree that no other person is to be benefitted thereby and I do by these presents constitue and appoint my son William F. First land transaction I could find for W. F. in Missouri is recorded in "US Land Sales in Springfield Land Office Abstracts: June 1835-Feb 1846" - this was the same land patented to W. F. on 3 Apr 1848, but apparently recorded in the Land Office between 1 Mar 1845 and 28 Feb 1846. Joseph D. Haden and James W. Blakey also purchased land during the same time period. Did they come to Missouri together? Joel H. Haden had patents entered in 1837; Rezin Haden and his family in 1839.

Land Patents from Springfield Land Office: 40 acres to William Hyden (sic) of Greene County dated 3 Apr 1848 - NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 S27, T29, R20; 40, 41.87 and 41.18 acres to William F. Haden 15 May 1857, all in S5, T28, R22 - these plats are all in Greene County. 40 acres on 1 Jun 1859 in S25, T27, R24 - Christian County. Also in Greene Co Deeds: William Russel & Jane his wife to William Haden: 79 acres, NW fractional qtr of S30, T27, R23; dated 24 Dec 1851 - this land also lies in Christian County - they possibly moved from Greene County at this time.

Book 3, p.46 5 May 1849 Brought before me, acting Juspict of the peace for Township of Porter, Greene County by William F. Haden of Polk Township, a stray Bay Mare & sorrel horse colet. Said Mare supposed to be either years old. WM. F. Haden makes oath that he took up said stray at his residence on 27 Apr 1849 and no marks or brands have been altered by him. Apparised by A. H. Payne & Thomas Turner to $50. F. C. Howard, JP. Copy filed 19 May 1849.

1849/50 "Gold Fever struck Greene County residents...." Named Dr. C. Perkins, Jacob & Moses Proctor among others. W. F. was not there but family tradition says he did go to California but found no gold. He had momentos from California that his son J.B. would show to his grandson John Haden.

1850 Census, Greene County, MO (Farmer in Polk Twp.) shows two girls living with Wm.F. & Mary Jane - Margarette, age 13 and Sarah M. age 12, both born in Kentucky and does not list a separate surname for them. They are too old to be Mary Jane's children, they were the daughters of his first wife, Mary Martha Ann Gaines. They were still with William & Mary Jane in 1860 Census, although the older girl was listed as Elizabeth then and their ages are 20 and 18. The deed of gift from their grandmother identifies the two girls as Elizabeth Margaret and Sarah Mildred, and also mentions Maryetta Clay.

Circuit Court Case: Greene Co Book F, Aug Term 1863. Bank of MO against John Dixon, William F. Haden & William Stewart. Defendants did not answer so found confessed of $400 debt + $61 Damage. Land described as John Dixon's ordered to be sold as necessary to satisfy execution. One piece of property is NW 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sect 30, Twp 27, Range 23 - this is either the land Haden bought from Russell in 1851 or abuts it; the deed says "Lot No. One of the North West fractional quarter of S30, T27, R23".

Said to have fought in the Civil War. According to W. C. Haden, his great- grandfather was imprisoned in Ft. Smith, AR, during the Civil War for spying and was pardoned by Abraham Lincoln just before his hanging. Upon release he went to Texas to join his wife and family. [Since Abe Lincoln was dead by the end of the War this doesn't seem to be quite correct, but perhaps William was pardoned before that time.] I did find a letter his son wrote to a brother describing when their father was in a Yankee jail in Ft. Smith and two of his teen-age daughters rode horseback from Missouri to Ft. Smith to try to get him freed.

For the years 1866-1868 W. F. Haden was on the tax rolls of Lamar Co. TX He apparently never purchased land in that county, but he had several horses and by 1868, his herd of cattle numbered 11.

I do not know how the Hadens came into possession of the following 105 acres. It is apparently a mortgage deed which the Fields were never able to pay.

And $600 in Gold due on the 25th of Dec 1870 for which the said Fields has executed his note. $840. Ladonia, TX, Jul 29, 1869. On or before 25th Dec 1870, I promise to pay Wm F. Haden $840 in US currency for value received with interest from the 25th Dec next at 10 pr cent per annum which may be discharged in gold at $140. We the said Wm F. Haden & Mary J. Haden have sold to James Fields all that tract in Fannin Co on the North Sulphur about 18 miles from Bonham, 105 acres. It being the preemption survey of Carwell Burden. Begin NE corner R. Haden all that tract in Fannin Co on waters of the North Sulphur. 18 miles from Bonham, 105 acres. Preemption survey of Carrol Berden, mound in the prairie, the NE corner of R. Flemings survey, A. C. Fannin Co DB S., p.56 The District Court for Western Dist of Teas on 16 Nov 1868 issued an order authorizing me the undersigned H. S. Stobaugh, assignee of the estate and effects of Elbert Early a bankrupt, to sell certain lands belonging to the estate. After advertising the sale for 20 days in the "Texas Vindicator", a weekly newpaper published in the town of Paris, TX and by printed posters did expose at Public Auction in town of Honey Grove, on 15 May 1868, the following lands. 160 acres the west end of the south half of the Johnathan Hobbs survey on North Sulphur in Fannin Co. Begin NW corner E. Early's homestead of 200 acres, etc, boundary line of Mr. Stoan's land. Also 40 acres out of the A. C. Maxwell survey, SW corner of Early's homestead, Cummings boundary line. William F. Haden bid the sum of $1000, being the highest bidder. Make over deed. 16 May 1868. A. G. Stobaugh, Assignee of Elbert Earley, Bankrupt. Stobaugh ack. 24 Nov 1869. rec. 30 Apr 1870
DB S, p.436. District Court for Western Dist of Texas on 15 Nov 1868, (bankrupt Elbert Early) Seems to be exact same deed except at the end (this deed made at the request of Saul A. Roberts, administrator of C. C. Alexander decd who was the actual purchaser. This 27 day of May 1869. Proved by Stobaugh on 19 Aug 1870. Rec. 21 Sep 1870.

The purchase of this 160 acres land required a mortgage:
DB S, p.422 W. F. Haden am bound to George D.M.Jimsey of Panola Co in the sum of $5000 for which I set my hand and seal this Aug 7 1870. Wm. F. Haden has this day sold to G. D. M. Jimsey two parcels for the consideration of $14 per acre, $500 in hand paid, the balance to be paid 10 Dec 1870 when titles are to be perfected. One parcel being where he now lives, part of the headright of Carroll Burden, suppose to contain 25 acres. The other the west end of the south half of Jonathan Hobbs survey on North Sulphur, supposed to contain 160 acres. Wm F. Haden shall cause to make good title to the above G. D. Wiley was a descendant of William Haden of North Carolina - a 4th cousin to the children of William Franklin Haden. The families had divided in the 1760's. Did they have any idea they were kin? I suspect they did, since they sold land to the Merrills:

William and Mary Jane also sold the following five acres from the Burden tract on the same day they sold to the Merrills:

Haden, wife for $60 US gold to be paid the first day of Jan 1871 by Henry Holmes,, sell to him a tract in Fannin near North Sulphur being part of Carrol Burdens 105 acre preemption. Five acres. $60 in gold bearing ten percent from date until paid. 11 Mar 1870. Signed: W. F. Haden, M. J. Haden. Hadens proved the same day. Rec. 13 Dec 1872.

In 1870, W. F. Haden, first appeared on the Fannin Co tax rolls. He is shown with 40 acres from John Dosier and 160 acres from Hay/May. He had 3 horses, 10 head of cattle. The following year, W. F. Haden reported 90 acres, granted in the name of Justis Jernigan, Abstract #356. In 1872, he reported 190 acres from Jernigan and 20 acres from Hobbs, abstract #338. This would be consistent with his son Joseph's account that the family moved to Fannin County in 1869. Joseph also reported that his father bought land just west of Pecan Gap in 1870. He stated they moved from the farm into Ladonia in 1876.

Fannin Co DB T, p.131 W. F. Haden and Mary J. Haden, wife for $2842.00, sell to Charles Lewis of Harrison Co the following parcels: In Fannin Co, S side North Sulphur about 20 miles from Bonham. SW corner of Jonathan Hobbs survey, boundary of Elbert Early homestead, 160 acres. Another tract, begin SW corner of Thomas Morris survey, 20 acres. Another tract out of SE corner of the Carrol Burden 105 acre preemption survey - stake in prairie corner of James Cummings 160 acre preemption, middle of the branch, down the channel, 23 acres. 24 Jan 1871. signed: W. F. Haden, Mary J. Haden. They proved the deed the same day. Rec. 31 Jan 1871.

First is south of North Sulphur a part of Samuel Days 931 acre tract surveyed by virtue of Curtis Jernigan's head right certificate. Begin E boundary line of Days survey, 80 acres. The second also south of North Sulphur, part of Martha Bourland's 499 acre tract surveyed by virtue of the Curtis Jernigan headright certificate. Begin at G. W. William and Mary Jane Haden sold a tract to the husband of their eldest daughter, Marietta:

We sell to John Dixon a tract in the SE part of Fannin Co. It being part of a 421 acre tract surveyed for the headright certificate of Mathew Brown. NE corner of 100 acres deeded to W. F. Haden by Samuel & Nancy J. Day. SE corner of a 25 acre tract deeded to Samuel Dixon by W. F. & M. J. Haden. 25 acres to John Dixon. 1 Jan 1873. Signed: W. F. Haden, Mary J. Haden. They had also sold a tract to John's brother Samuel, but it was recorded later.

Hockaday his wife have delived to us three promissory notes: One for $666 and 2/3 dollars due on 1 Jan 1878, to bear interest from 1 Jan 1877. One note for $666 and 2/3 dollars due 1 Jan 1879 and to bear interest at the rate of 10% from 1 Jan 1877 until paid. And the third for $666 and 2/3 dollars due 1 Jan 1880, to bear 10% interest from 1 Jan 1877. Montgomery's tract of 44 acres out of the Hobbs survey, NE corner of tract deeded to W. F. Haden out of said Hobbs survey; with Hadens East boundary line, north line of Alexander Maxwell Survey, down the middle of the channel of Bourland's creek. 55 acres. 17 Feb 1871 (or 1877). Signed: R. In 1876, William & Mary Jane puchased the lot where they would live in town.

On Lot 6 was a house built in 1863 by D. B. Morrell, a Baptist minister This was a lot once owned by Frances McCowan (likely the man McCowansville, later Ladonia, was named for) and then Elijah Dupree, who originally laid out the town. I believe that later their son Joseph Benjamin and his wife lived in the house and all four of their sons were born in this home. It became a Texas Historical Medallion Home in 1965.

Fannin County I, W. F. Haden being of sound mind but of feeble health, and being upon the end of leaving home, in hopes thereby to recuperate my failing health, do make this my last will and testament. 1st I do hereby bequeath or give to my wife M. J. Haden all the property and money that is coming to me or to us jointly, after the payment of all our just debts. And the said M. J. Haden is hereby authorized and empowered to use said property and money as she may think proper, for the support of herself and family -- And she the said M. J. Haden is to have full power to Sell the real estate and to pass good, and sufficient title, if she shall think best.
And it is my wish and desire that the foregoing instrument shall be admitted to record and take effect in event I the undersigned shall not live or so soon as I shall die.

W. G. Nunn one of the subscribing witnesses to the last Will and Testament of W. F. Haden being Sworn Says that he recognizes the paper handed him here in court as bring the last Will and Testament of W. F. Haden dec'd that he recognizes the Signature of himself as one of the Subscribing Witnesses to said Will, also recognizes the Signature of C. W. T. Weldon the other Subscribing Witness and the Signature of W. F. Haden the Testator as being genuine and that he Saw W. F. Haden Sign Said Will and that he and the Said C. W. T. Weldon Signed Said Will as Subscribing Witnesses at the request of said Haden and that Said Haden and Said Witnesses Signed Said Will in the presence of each other. And that Said W. F. Haden was of Sound mind and disposing memory at the time of executing Said Will, and that he died about the 8th day of September 1880 that he was a resident Citizen of Fannin County texas at the time of his death.

To T. B. Cox, Judge of the Hon. County Court of Fannin County Texas setting for Probate & other matters. Your Petitioner Mary J. Haden a Citizen of Ladonia in Said Fannin County Texas would most respectfully Show unto your Honor that she was the Wife of W. F. Haden deceased who departed this life on the 8th day of September AD 1880 in the town of said Ladonia in said State and County and left in writing his Certain Will bequeathing all his possessions to his Wife M. J. Haden to use and dispose of as she saw proper and best so to do, which Will is filed with the Clerk of Said County Court J. H. Oliphant and she prays that the Court will allow said Will to be probated. The Estate consists of a homestead and a place of business in the town of Ladonia. Some personal property - all amounting probably to three thousand dollars the Estate owes nothing - no debts of Consequence is due the estate Consequently there is no need of any Administration. but that the Will may be probated and admitted to record according to the terms of Said Will. She M. J. Haden prays that due notice as the law requires be given and the Will as filed herewith be probated for which she will ever pray.
