169. John William HADEN^{105,122,137,138,139} was born on 31 July 1849 in Greene County, Missouri.^{120,140,141,142} He died on 21 October 1925 at the age of 76 in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.^122,141

Apparently the following is Johnny's first land purchase.
Fannin Co DB V, p.41 W. H. B. Holmes and Emma M. Holmes his wife for $1350 and the further consideraton of promissory note for $150 bearing this date to be due Jan 1 1874, by John W. Haden of said Fannin Co. Tract on waters of Camp Johnson, 100 acres, part of survey of 640 acres in the name of A. C. Jouette and 5 acres out of Carrol Burden's preemption of 105 acres. ___ day of Dec 1872. signed: W. H. B. Holmes, Emma M. Holmes. The Holmes proved on ___ Dec 1872. Recorded Dec 23, 1872.

DB W, p.499 John W. Doty and M. E. Doty for $100 paid by John W. Doty (sic - should have been Haden), sell to said John W. Haden, 31 3/4 acres, part of Hiram McWilliams survey headright of 320 acres. On the North Sulphur; boundary line of said original survey, NW corner of E. Dupress tract of 32 1/2 acres out of the sd original survey, up the north fork of the North Sulphur, west line of James Cummings. 6 Feb 1874. signed: John W. Doty. Martha E. Doty. Dotys proved the deed the same day. Rec. Mar 31 1874.

DB 2, p. 17 W. F. Haden & M. J. Haden his wife for $1000 paid by John W. Haden, sell two tracts in Fannin Co on th waters of North Sulphur. The first being part of Johnathan T. Hobbs survey, begin center of Bourland Creek, etc. 36 acres. The second part of 499 acre survey made for Martha Bourland, 10 acres. 11 Oct 1876. Signed: W. F. Haden, M. J. Haden. Proved the same day. Rec. Feb 19 1877.

In 1880, John was listed as a dry goods merchant. G. M. Evens, age 25, born in South Carolina lived with the family and was in the same line of business.

Mr. (J. W.) Haden was born July 31, 1849, near Springfield, Greene Co., MO. Sympathizing with the south in a section that was largely in sympathy with the Union, persuaded the family to move to Texas. He entered the mercantile business with G. W. Blakeney. This partnership dissolved after a year, and Mr. Haden continued alone. In 1885, in moved to Bonham, erected a business on the corner where the Bonham State Bank building is now located and cotinued until he retired.

p.72 The First National Bank of Bonham, the second bank of this city was incorporated in December 1883, and opened business in January 1884, with a paid up capital of $60,000 under the control and business management of a Board of Directors and officers, consisting of W. A. Nunnelle, President, M. W. Halsell, Vice President, A. B. Scarborough, Cashier, C. W. T. Weldon, of Ladonia, John A Barnard, Smith Lipscomb, and J. W. HADEN. The institution is doing a thriving business, the careful and safe manner of which inspires confidence in every one with whom it transacts any business. The present management consist of the same gentlemen under whose control the bank was first opened.

There was a fire in Ladonia on 1 Oct 1896. It killed three people - Mrs. Jane Knapp and her niece and nephew, Carrie & Jimmie McFarland - and destroyed one side of the Ladonia square. The paper lists the losses and insurance coverage: J. C. Haden, groceries, loss $3000, insurance $1200; then later lists J. W. Haden, damage to building $1500, fully covered. Since the brother James C. Haden did not live in Fannin Co, the first listing was likely a typo - probably J. B. Haden [Joseph B.] was correct. I believe J. B. owned the lot; his brother ran the grocery.
I believe that Mrs. Jane Knapp, was nee Eliza Jane Smith,born 1841 in Kentucky, who had married a Knapp. Her sister, and mother of the children who died, was likely Cretia Lemira Smith, born 1842, who married Abel McFarland, 18 Oct 1866, Hopkins Co, TX, who was apparently unrelated to the other McFarlands who had lived in Fannin Co for sometime. The town had taken up donations for Mrs. McFarland.

Recollections of Ladonia: The Town and Its People, compiled by Muriel Champion Burleson, 1991, p.21-22, has this to say about the town and the fire. "There was a frame builing on the Haden lot in which there was J. C. Haden Grocery Co.... A fire in 1896 started in the City Hotel and burned everything from there to J. B. Haden's place on the West side."

1900 Census - John, "Capitalist", and Mary and Dewitt. Also a niece, Alice Jones is living with them. This would be the daughter of John's deceased sister Virginia.
Prec 1, Bonham, Fannin, TX. John W. Haden born Jul 1849 in MO, was age 50 and married for 30 years. Mary, wife, b. Nov 1849, 50, 4 children - 2 living. D'witt, son, b. Jun 1882, 17 and Alice Jones, niece, b. Jul 1877, age 22, teacher.
Dewitt was also listed as a boarder in the home of William J. Ables in Grayson Co TX, attending school.

1910 Census - John W. Hayden, living in the Alexander Hotel on the south side of the Public Square with wife Mary. They stated they had been married 25 years (it was actually 40) His place of birth, and his parents, given as Arkansas. I don't believe either of the Hadens gave the information to the Census taker.

J. W. Haden has returned from Colorado where he and Mrs. Haden have been during the summer. He brought Mrs. Haden to Dallas, where she is now with her daughter, Mrs. George Bird. Mrs. Haden is now suffering with paralysis and is in an almost helpless condition.

Listed in the 1920 Census as "J. W. Haydn" living in Bonham, Ward 5. Second wife Annie is with him. Occupation - Capitalist!

Dr. A. B. Kennedy received a message yesterday evening stating that J. W. Haden was seriously ill at Colorado Springs, and requesting him to come there at once. Mr. Haden and his wife and others left here last week to spend the summer in Colorado. The message was the first information anyone here had that Mr. Haden was sick.
Dr. Kennedy left last night to attend him and will reach Colorado Springs tomorrow morning.

J. W. Haden Dies at Bonham Wednesday
J. W. Haden, aged 76 years, dropped dead in his bank at Bonham, Texas, wednesday morning of this week, while apparently in good health, considering his age. Deceased was a brother of J. C. Haden of this city. Funeral arrangements were not made pending the arrival of a daughter from New York.
Mr. Haden was one of North Texas' most prominent financiers and leading businss men. He has been a shareholder in the Durant National Bank of this city, since its organization a quarter of a century ago, and had a wide circle of friends in and near the city. Mr. Haden owned business property and had other investments in Durant at the time of his death.

A Number of Relatives and Friends From a Distance In the City
The funeral of J. W. Haden was held from the residence of Mrs. Ella Crawford on West Fifth street Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr Haden and his wife having made their home with Mrs. Crawford for some time. Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Haden are sisters.
The funeral service was in charge of Dr. F. C. McConnell, pastor of the First Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. C. E. Wagner, pastor of the First Christian church. Dr. McConnell's talk being remarked as a very good one. Mr. Wagner's prayer was a fervent one.
The flowers, of which there was an immense quantity, coming from many points as well as being sent by Bonham friends of the deceased, were most exquisite, both in bounty and design.
The pall-bearers were selected from the employees of the First National Bank, an institution with which deceased had so long been identified, both as an officer an director, and were as follows: Messrs. Dick Saunders, Roy Gass, Olvin Gross, D. J. Evans, J. B. Anthony and Leslie Earl Leatherwood.
The honorary pallbearers, selected from the friends and business associates of Mr. Haden, were as follows:
Charles Halsell, Max Hermer, Charles Doss, L. C. Fuller, D. W. Sweeney, A. B. Scarborough, J. C. Saunders, Will H. Evans, Bland Smith, Dr. A. B. Kennedy, L. K. Crawford, Haden Whitsett, J. W. Beautiful musice during the service was rendered by a choir, both at the house and the grave.

John William HADEN and Mary Ellen MOORE were married on 12 May 1870 in Fannin County, Texas.^135,143,144 Mary Ellen MOORE^139,145, daughter of Rufus Roddy MOORE and Jane Christine DILLINGHAM, was born on 12 November 1849 in Texas.^{72,138,139,141,146} She died on 16 October 1912 at the age of 62 in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas.¹⁴¹

In 1880 Mary Ellen did not give the birthplace of her parents.

In 1900, Mary's place of birth is given as Arkansas, AR also the birthplace of both parents.

Mrs. J. W. Haden Not Improving
A letter from Mrs. J. W. Haden who is sick at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Byrd, in Dallas, received today by Mr. Haden announced that she is not improving very much. Mrs. Haden also wishes to thank her many friends here for their kindness and Thanksgiving remembrances. Her friends here will regret to learn that she is not doing so well.

Mrs. J. W. Haden Died Last Night
Funeral Will Occur in Bonham tomorrow Afternoon at Willow Wild
A message was received by friends here this morning announcing the death of Mrs. J. W. Haden, which occurred in Dallas last night at eight o'clock. The remains will arrive in Bonham tomorrow afternoon on the 2:15 T. & P. train and will be conveyed from the train to the cemetery where the funeral will be conducted.
Mrs. Haden had been an intense sufferer for many months and her death was not a surprise to her friends. She had been a resident of Bonham for many years and by her friendly disposition had won many warm personal friends who are deeply grieved to learn of her demise.
The husband and two children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and loving mother. They have the deepent sympathy of their many friends.

Annie appears to be living at home with her mother in the 1910 Census. Age is given as 34 which would be about 10 years too young. Saleslady in the Dry Goods - maybe at the Blakeney store?

Bonham Woman Dies
Bonham, Texas, May 7 - Mrs. Annie Haden, wife of the late J. H. Haden who for many years was a prominent Bonham banker, died in a hospital here Sunday. Funeral services will be held here Monday with burial in a local cemetery.

Death Certificate states Annie O. Haden, of 409 West 5th St, Bonham, TX died Allen Memorial Hospital in Bonham on 7 May 1944. She was born 3 May 1866, age 78 years, 4 days. She died of "heart block". She was widowed. Her father J. B. Oliphint and mother Frances Doss, listed as born in Texas. She was attended by J. M. Donaldson, M.D.
