April 14, 1994, "When Then Was Now"
By Wayne A. Guyant
I have talked to people, written letters, and spent many hours in the courthouse searching land records. Through this, I have gained information that I am able to add; in many cases, names, dates and locations to what Mr. McGill had related to Mrs. Freiburger.
After leaving the C. N. Nelson and Folmer Christensen warehouse on Hibbard Street, George and Rosemary continued east for only a few rods to Balch Street; here, they turned left, passing under the railroad tracks, and there on their right side stands what was once known as the Bailey Cranberry Warehouse.
Between the old warehouse and the main track only a few feet to the south, is still the spur track, overgrown with grass and weeds. On the east end of the building still stands an old outdoor privy, in poor condition.
The history of this location dates back to October 1852, when Samuel Pinkerton purchased from the United States Government, the southeast quarter of the southwest half, in Section 20, T.22N-R.12E. This being the Township of Waupaca.
It was on September 15, 1857, that Samuel Pinkerton and his wife Margaret, of Page County, Iowa, sold this 40 acres to Charles L. Bartlett of Waupaca for $1,000, excepting 8 rods by 9 rods that Samuel Pinkerton had previously sold to School District Number 4, which was taken off the southwest corner.
This 40 became the Bartlett Addition to the Village of Waupaca. It contains lots one through 136.

Click on Thumbnail for Larger Photo!  Reformed Presbyterian Congregation of Clarinda, styled "COVENANTERS" is one of the religious denominations of Harlan Twp. The Rev. David McKee principally compiled the following: "The doctrinal principles of this sect are the same as those held in common with other churches bearing the name Presbyterian. This congregation was organized on 17 Dec. 1855 with 35 members. Messers. TONER, WHITEHILL, WILSON and McCLEAND Families were of the original members. From 1855 to 1857 private dwellings were used as places for worship. Then in 1857 the Fairview School house was used (Section 28). In 1860 they erected a frame building, which served until 1866, when it was found to small and a large well planned edifice was built. It was a frame structure 40' x 60'. It easily seats 500 persons. The officers of the congregation have been: First Pastor, Rev. Joseph McCRACKEN, ordained and installed Oct. 29, 1856, who left in 1858. Rev. David McKEE, preached for the people in 1859, and became their pastor on March 17, 1861.
All of Samuel W. and Margaret J. (Smith) PINKERTON's children were members at one time of this Congregation.

Page 691, PINKERTON, SAMUEL, farmer and Stock Raiser and Proprietor of Coal Banks, Section 27, P.O. Clarinda, IA. born in Antrim County, Ireland, September 1, 1825. He there grew to manhood and lived until 1847 In the spring of that year he emigrated to America, made his first settlement in Washington County, New York, where he remained about two years. From there he came to this county [Page Co.] in 1856 and settled on his present farm. He was married February 8, 1949 to Miss Margaret J. SMITH. She is also a native of Ireland. They have six children living:
1. Samuel J., 2. Martha, 3. Robert W., 4. Wm. A., 5. Margaret J., 6. Rachel, and one deceased, his oldest son James,
Mr. and Mrs PINKERTON and the five oldest children are members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, [Covenanter] as was also his deceased Son.
Mr. PINKERION and his good wife have both realized the full meaning of the word Pioneer. When they started here they did so without means and were compelled to work in and out of season to obtain means to buy and improve their farm. He hauled a part of his lumber from Ottumwa to build his house. By industry, honesty and economy he has acquired a good farm of 440 acres; is energetic and ventursome and stands among the respected men of the township.
He is entitled to great credit for his efforts in sinking a Coal shaft on his place. He is now down some 400 feet and is still at work delving in Coal.
As an energetic and industrious man he has few equals, always planning some public or private improvements and necer resting until he sees his plan completed.

SIXTY-THIRD ANNIVERSARY of SAMUEL and MARGARET PINKERTON
Page County, Iowa 15 Feb. 1912
Click on Thumbnail for larger Photo!  Eighty-six years young and Sixty-three years married -- this is the record of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel PINKERTON, of Harlan Twp. A record that in these days of affinities and easy divorces is worthy of more than passing notice, as Thursday, Feb 8, was the sixty-third anniversary of their marriage. Almost sixty-five of their friends gathered to surprise them at the BAYLES home, where they are being most tenderly cared for by their daughter,  Click on Redball for More Info.<--- Mrs. BAYLES.
After all present had done justice to the bountiful dinner, the company were called to order by Rev. McCONAUGHY, their Pastor, who reminded them of the esteem in which they are held, by placing in their hands a goodly sum of gold coin of the realm, as a slight token of that esteem.
Father PINKERTON, then with much feeling responded, and with a merry twinkle in his eyes told that while crossing the Atlantic Ocean in 1847, he noticed that one of the passengers, a comely young lady, was the possessor of a very nice Bible and he further learned that the Bible had been won as a prize for efficient work in Sabbath School, and that the fair owner was Miss Margaret Jane SMITH, and that her destination was somewhere in Vermont, while he was to locate in New York, but being of that type that does things, he commenced a campaign, called Courtship, that in about two years brought him into possession of the fair lady and her Bible.
Mother PINKERTON expressed her appreciation of the kindly remembrance of friends, and then to show the young people how it should be done, recited a poem in eulogy of the Christian's hope, much to the delight and admiration of everyone present.
Then a number of the guest related some of the incidents of the early days in which Mr. & Mrs. PINKERTON were active figures. Mr. William McMICHAEL told of having boarded at their home fifty years ago while breaking the prairie with ox teams and said that the Christian character of that home had much to do in forming his own life.
Father and Mother PINKERTON are both good old Country Antrim, Ireland stock and life-long members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. After their marriage in 1849, they lived in Wisconsin for many years, coming to Page County, Iowa in 1856, long before the Iowa and Southwestern was built, the lumber for the barn still standing on the old home place being hauled from Ottumwa, 150 miles.
Do the young men of to-day [1912] as they whiz along the Waubonsie? Trail, realize what that means, and also realize that because some did pioneer work that their lives are made easier, and yet amid privations, merely hinted at, this worthy couple raised a family of four sons and three daughters.

 (4th d/o Samuel J. PINKERTON & 1st Wife Mollie J. HOWARD)
In the year 1679 when Charles the 2nd was king of the British Isles the government was endearing to force a state form of government and worship on all of the churches in the kingdom.
The Covenanters in Scotland refused to comply with the states demand and claimed the right to worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience guided by God word and earnestly endeavored to be allowed to retain their liberty of conscience and freedom of worship but were not successful and when an army under Claverhouse was sent to compel them to submit they took up arms and fought for what they believed to be right.
At the Battle of Drumclog they were victorious, but at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge on June 22, 1679 they were defeated 400 were killed 1,200 were taken prisoners, the rest fled and escaped.
Among those who escaped were three brothers by the name of PINKERTON who made their way to Ireland. One of them settled in County Down, One at Sealon,
The other brother who's name was James PINKERTON near town of Ballamoney and engaged in Farming and Brick baking and delivered brick by boat on the Bantourain and by horse and cart to the towns and country around. In course of time this James PINKERTON and Rachel WARWICK were married.
To them was born six sons: James, Samuel, William, Robert, John and Andrew and a daughter Sarah. James, Anderson, and Sarah remained in Ireland all their lives. William came to America and lived a number of years in Waupaca Co., WI. then moved to Page Co., Iowa. Robert settled in New York State. John in California.
About the year 1849 Samuel PINKERTON took passage on a sailing vessel at Belfast, Ireland for America. One the same boat Miss Margaret SMITH took passage. They were not yet acquainted. Their acquaintance came about in this way, there was a dispute among some men on board the ship and in order to settle the dispute it was necessary to refer to the Bible and none of the disputants had a Bible and Samuel PINKERTON was appointed to go and borrow the Bible. It was Miss Margaret SMITH who had the Bible. She had received it as a prize. There had been a contest in the Prayer Meeting among the young folks. (Yes the young folks went to Prayer Meeting in those days.) to see who could memorize and repeat the longest Psalm, one girl repeated the 119th Psalm and that she had the prize but Miss Margaret SMITH repeated the 119th and 120th so won the Bible.
Will PINKERTON{?} and Miss Margaret SMITH were pretty well acquainted when they arrived in New York for they had been four months{?} on the way having had a stormy voyage, with contrary winds.
Samuel PINKERTON obtained work in New York state on a farm and Miss Margaret SMITH in a family home in Vermont, not far away. They were married in Vermont in 1850{?} and went to Wisconsin where some PINKERTON cousins{?} lived. To them Wisconsin was born: James, Martha, and Samuel.
Then hoping to get land of their own and to be near the church of their choice they moved to Page County, Iowa where Robert, William, Margaret and Rachel were born.
At the time of the Civil War 1861-1865 Samuel PINKERTON [age 36yrs] would have been in the Union Army but was refused as a soldier because he was near sighted{?}
     For a number of years Samuel PINKERTON and some other men freighted with Oxen and Wagons principally taking provisions to the Government Forts and Soldier Camps. in the West going as far as Denver, Colorado and Cheyenne, Wyoming. A dangerous occupation in those days, danger of Indians and in danger of bad white men. Almost every one went armed but Samuel PINKERTON never carried a gun.{?}
In 1886 Mr. & Mrs. Samuel PINKERTON came to Sherman County, Oregon and in the same summer of 1886, they went to Wallow County, Oregon and from their to Walla Walla, Washington then to Kent, Washington where they stayed a number of years.
Then they returned to Page County, Iowa where they made their home with daughter Mrs Martha (PINKERTON) BAYLES from where they passed on Mother in 1913, aged 87 years and Father in 1915 aged 70 years They rest from a weary active strenuous life and their influence for good goes on.

A Tribute to a Pioneer COVENANTER Family
 By Phyllis Fulk
The following article was in the COVENANTER Church Centennial records of Oct. 01, 1968. Click on Redball for More Info.<--- [REF:#16]
Around 1880, if anyone had come into the COVENANTER Community and asked for a small, wiry, energetic, industrious and venturesome man, he would have been directed south to SAMUEL PINKERTON'S place. The PINKERTONS lived a few miles west and south of the COVENANTER Church in Harlan Twp. Sec. 27. There was a one story house, built with lumber hauled from Ottumwa, Iowa. The barn near the house was built on a slope so the basement opened to the south on ground level. The well was located between the house and barn and all the water for the Sabbath day was carried on Saturday so they could rest on the Sabbath day.
SAMUEL was born in Ireland, in 1825. His father JAMES PINKERTON lived in Antrim Co., near the town of Ballymoney where he engaged in farming and brick-baking. He delivered brick by boat on the Bantourain, and by horse and cart to the towns and country around. He married RACHEL WARWICK and to them were born six sons: JAMES, SAMUEL, WILLIAM, ROBERT, JOHN, and ANDREW, and a daughter SARAH. JAMES, ANDREW, and SARAH remained in Ireland all their lives. WILLIAM came to Page Co., Iowa; ROBERT to New York State; and JOHN to California. About the year 1849, SAMUEL took passage on a sailing vessel at Belfast, Ireland, bound for America. On board ship there was a dispute among some of the men, and in order to settle the dispute, it was necessary to refer to the Bible. Young PINKERTON was appointed to borrow a Bible from MARGARET SMITH who had a Bible she had won as a prize at a Prayer Meeting contest. This contest was to see who could recite the longest Psalm; one girl repeated the 119th Psalm and thought she had won but Miss MARGARET SMITH repeated the 119th Psalm and the 120th also, winning. MARGARET and SAMUEL were well acquainted by the time they reached New York for the stormy voyage had taken four months.
They were married in Vermont in 1850 and went to Waupaca, Wisconsin, Where JAMES, MARTHA, and SAMUEL JR. were born. Then to have land of their own and to be near a COVENANTER Church they moved to Page Co., Iowa, in 1856, where ROBERT, WILLIAM, MARGARET and RACHEL were born.
The PINKERTONS were active in the church. Mr. PINKERTON liked to talk and especially to argue and was known to give long prayers. Mrs. PINKERTON was active in the Missionary Society. They also brought families over from Ireland to give them a start in this land, one such family being the BLAIRS.
SAMUEL PINKERTON could not join the Union Army during the Civil War because of his near-sighted-ness. He did freight with "oxen and wagon", taking prisoners to the government forts and camps. He would go as far as Denver and Cheyenne and said he was paid in gold dust.
There was plenty of danger with Indians and bad weather, but he never carried a rifle. He also freighted for James Shambaugh. The flour that wasn't sold locally was freighted to Denver, Omaha, and St. Joseph.
SAMUEL PINKERTON was a strong industrious pioneer and was continuously on the move. On trips to St. Joseph, Mo. he would take the neighbors eggs and butter to trade by "walking". Walking was "easier" than riding he would say. Nebraska City was a over night walk of 45 miles. In Omaha one day when a neighbor asked for a ride home, SAMUEL said "Come along if you want to walk with me." At another time when something was left at the camp site of the night before, SAMUEL said he would run back and get it, which he did and arrived the next morning as they were reading for the days travel. SAMUEL sold horses and when he arrived home after a deal he had made, he found a mistake and he didn't want to waste time hitching a team, so he walked back to the neighbor's house and said he galloped only when not in view of a house, which meant he galloped most of the way.
On the PINKERTON farm of 440 Acres there were trees which were called PINKERTON'S Grove. In 1880 SAMUEL had a coal mine sunk on his property to 400 feet which cost him a great deal. SAMUEL always wanted the best horses and better buildings. He invested heavily in some livestock and in 1886, and had a epidemic of Hog cholera, at the age of 61, he was completely broke!
MARGARET PINKERTON said, "SAMUEL would have been a vain man if he had not lost". SAMUEL Sr. and MARGARET moved to Oregon State in 1886 to live near their sons SAMUEL JR. and ROBERT. They returned in their old age to Iowa and lived with daughter MATTIE. Mrs. MARGARET PINKERTON died 1913, age 87; Mr. SAMUEL PINKERTON died 1915, age 90.
Son JAMES died a young man; WILLIAM became a COVENANTER minister. MARTHA married WILLIAM BAYLES; MARGARET became Mrs. JAMES McKEOWN; and RACHEL, Mrs. ALEC DUNCAN. Today [1968] in the Covenanter Church the family descendants are JOHN BAYLES, EVELYN PERRY, and sons DUANE, and CHARLES PERRY. SAMUEL and MARGARET PINKERTON, "Pioneers", rest from a very active, strenuous life and their influence for good goes on.
