William J. BAYLES, was a descendant of the French Huguenots who by persecutions
were driven from France to Wales, whence many of them later came to America. He was a life long member of the Covenanter Church. He first united with the congregation that was formerly at "Linn Grove, Iowa" [Buena Vista Co.] Upon moving to Clarinda he placed his membership in the Covenanter church of this place [Page Co. IA.] which for some years he served as precenter, and of which he continued a loyal member to the day of his death. He was a regular in his attendance of the curch services and the prayer meeting. He hope of salvation rested upon the atonement and imputed righteousness of Christ. Death came after but a few hours sickness which was not marked by any distressful suffering. The community has has lost a good husband, father, frend, neighbor, citizen, and Christian. The burial services which were largely attended were held in the Covenanter church, conducted by pastor, M.S. McMILLAN, assisted by Rev. Paul COLEMAN of Blanchard. Interment was in the cemetery of that place. All of Mr. BAYLES children were at the burial service except Sam BAYLES who could not come because of his wife had but recently passed through a critical operation. per [Obit Pg 18] |

As remembered by Elizabeth McCALLA [REF:#002, Pg17] | William and Martha (Pinkerton) Bayles spent a couple of years in eastern Iowa taking care of either William's father or mother or both. They attended the Linn Grove Covenanter Church. They settled around 1873/74 on a forty west of the Covenanter Church near Clarinda. Gilmores had a store building just east of the house but the store was gone before I knew anything about it. Either written or said, it was a two story building. Mr. Gilmore drove his wagon to St. Joe, Missouri for supplies. William Bayles must have been a very good Psalm leader in the Church as he was leader for some time. I think this was probably at the time they had the split leaf Psalm book or "Sam" book as many from Ireland called it. Anyway, the minister gave out a psalm that Will was not so sure of the tune, but that did not bother him as he knew a tune to fit it. So, he put it to the tune of a popular song of that day. "Go tell Aunt Abby, her old gray goose is dead. The one she's been saving to make a feather bed." Can't you just see the old folks frowning and the young folks so tickled they could hardly keep from laughing. I'm sure a change from the old slow solemn tunes. Some one told me they heard a Hymn set to that old tune - so. you see Mr. Bayles was just ahead of his time. I took care of Mrs Bayles when she had a broken hip. She talked much of days gone by. She told me a story that no one that I have asked seems to have heard. She said there was something burled on the place but she did not know what nor where. It might have been during Civil War. She told of taking care of her folks at the last. She said they did not have screens and she cut branches off the trees to put in open windows to help keep out the flies. Mrs Bayles worked long, hard and raised a big family. Her big sorrow was losing daughter, Elsie. [d. 1900] |
