He and his descendants seem to have spelled their name Barnette instead of Barnett in most records; however, his tombstone says Barnett.
Appears in 1870 census: Harrisburg Tp., Van Buren Co., p. 270B, as son "A. C.". His mother's obituary (1883) says she had 4 living children at that time. Unless there was another child who did not appear on any censuses, Atchison must have been one of them. So, we checked the 1880 census and found him in Fremont, Isabella Co., MI. 1900, 1910, and 1920, Jackson Co., MI. (1900, ED 1 p. 6; 1920, ED 36 p.1). Death certificate shows father Joseph Barnett.
The 1910 census, in Blackman Tp., ED 1, p. 14, notes that Atchison C. Barnett has been married 15 years and is in his second marriage to Luella J. His parents' birthplaces are given as Pennsylvania and Maryland -- this last item different from all other readings. Luella had one living child, presumably by her first marriage, but we still do not know the surname of her first husband.
The only obituary notice seems to be the one that appeared in the Springport Signal, August 4, 1927:
"A. C. Barnett, who was injured in an auto accident on the Duck Lake road last Monday, died at his home in the Griffith neighborhood Friday night. Funeral from the house Monday, burial near Charlotte. Mr. Barnett was 75 years old and is survived by his wife and one son, who lives in Chicago."
The marriage records of Jackson Co., MI contain the marriage to Luella J. Cook on 24 may 1896 by E. R. Curry, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Jackson, MI. The entry gives Atchison's mother's maiden name as Murdock, confirming the death certificate of his sister Martha Jane.
Found in Jackson Citizen Patriot (Jackson, Michigan), 30 mar 1914: "Minor Court News. ... J. E. Gallagher, who advertises himself as the "Minnesota Boy Healer," was arraigned Saturday afternoon on a warrant charging assault and battery, the complainant being Atchison C. Barnett. Mr. Gallagher told the court that he had treated a relative of Mr. Barnett, and that the latter had called at his office and demanded the money paid for treatment should be returned, claiming his relative had not been cured. The money was then returned in exchange for a receipt, and Barnett then demanded a copy of the receipt, which was given. An altercation then followed and Mr. Gallagher snatched the receipt from Mr. Barnett, but afterwards handed it back. Mr. Barnett then stepped to the telephone with the intention of calling the police, and Mr. Gallagher caught hold of him and threw him on his back. The court refused to accept a plea of guilty, preferring to hear both sides of the case, and set Mr. Gallagher's trial for April 7. Mr. Gallagher was released on his own recognizance."

In some official records, this family used the spelling Barnette. He was working as a cabinet maker in an automobile body factory in Pontiac, MI at the time of the 1930 census, but his family was not with him. Other records for the rest of the family suggest he must have divorced by 1909. His father's obituary places him in Chicago in 1927. In fact, it now seems that his wife Grace Winfield had divorced him in 1901, and that he may have remarried to Helen Groh, who had apparently divorced him and remarried almost immediately in 1903.
His marriage record in Jackson Co., MI gives his mother's maiden name as Dismit or Dinnit -- the writing is not clear. The name may be Dimmit—there were several families of this name in Armstrong Co., PA, although the spelling varies considerably.
From a descendant of Atchison, we learned the story that the family began using the spelling Barnette in order to disassociate themselves with an episode involving Leslie. We checked newspaper sources, and came upon several accounts: Los Angeles Times, 09 dec 1904: "Traveling Salesman Charges with Stealing Valuable Valise, in Bakersfield Jail. The police were notified last night by the Sheriff of Kern county that Leslie Barnett, a traveling salesman for a show-case concern, who is wanted here on a charge of grand larceny, is in the Bakersfield jail. An officer will be sent today for the accused man. Barnett is alleged to have worked a smooth game in this city, October 23, whereby he secured a valise containing $250 worth of cutlery samples belonging to a salesman named C. H. Teaff. According to the charge, Barnett left two suit cases at a transfer company's office and took a messenger boy with him when he went to get them. The boy was instructed to take the sample case belonging to Teaff in addition to the two belonging to Barnett, and since that morning Barnett has been missing. Barnett was arrested in Needles on a complaint from the Bakersfield officers, charging him with larceny, and when sent back to that city yesterday the sample case belonging to Teaff, with goods intact, was found in his possession." Further details appeared a few days later, 13 dec 1904: "Steals Case of Knives. Leslie Barnett, who was brought back from Bakersfield and charged with grand larceny for stealing the sample case of a cutlery salesman, was yesterday held for trial by Justice Chambers. Barnett at first wanted to waive an examination, but when he failed in that he insisted upon going on the witness stand in his own defense. He tried to make it appear that he was so drunk he didn't know what he was doing, and that he had no idea how the sample case came into his possession, except that it was through a mistake at the check office or on the train. The fact is that he carried it away from a transfer office, where the owner had left it to be checked. It containes sixty butcher and carving knives and other cutlery supplies, and was valued at $200. Barrett [mistake for Barnett! !] was formerly an employe[e] of a showcase factory in this city. It was discovered that he had previously been arrested at Bakersfield for stealing an overcoat. He had made gifts of handsome carvers to friends before he was arrected and the case recovered."
Eventually he was convicted and served 20 months at the Tulare County Jail, released 23 aug 1906. A brief stint in the Marines, 1909-1910, was no more successful.
The last certain record is in the 1930 census in Pontiac, Oakland Co., Michigan, where he is a lodger, and then in 1935 a Leslie Barnett of uncertain age (estimated at 73) died at the Oakland County Infirmary, suffering from alcoholism and pneumonia, on 23 feb 1935.

It is possible Hersie Barnette b. 14 oct 1908 d. ?? mar 1984 who appears in the Social Security Death Index, SSAN 373-32-3475, last residence, Jackson, MI, was another wife. The second known marriage, to Irene Fagan, in Williams Co., Ohio identifies him as a widower.

However, there is a newpaper article in the Jackson Citizen Patriot, (Jackson, Michigan) dated 23 feb 1919, in which it is reported that Ross Barnette of Jackson has received a poem from his cousin Elmer D. Barnette, Co. F, 126th Infantry, concerning the exploits of the 32nd Regiment during its march across the Rhine during World War I. There is a photograph of this Elmer, who had enlisted in Co. M, Jackson Guards, a National Guard unit that had been merged into an active unit. In order to be Ross' cousin, this Elmer D. Barnette would have to be a son of one of Ross' uncles, either Elmer or William. The solution is very likely found in a death record in Chicago, for Elmer Davis Barnette, son of William Barnette and Mary McGinnis, born in Chicago 26 may 1900, and died there 27 aug 1923, leaving a widow Mathilda. She was born Mathilda M. Goers, they were married in Cook Co., Illinois on 28 oct 1922. (William D. Barnett married Mamie E. McGinnis 04 jul 1899 in Cook Co., Illinois. There is a gravestone in Mount Olive Cemetery, Chicago, Illinois for William D. Barnett 1880-1910 and, on the same stone, Elmer D. Barnett 1900-1923. Also, a delayed birth certificate was issued in 1926 in Chicago for Nellie, daughter of William D. Barnett and Mamie E. McGinnis, born 07 aug 1909. The delayed certificate gives William's age as 30 and says he was born in Jackson, Michigan, which seems to prove his identity.)

Margaret is not found with the Barnett family in the 1850 census. However, her future husband, Oliver M. Creason age 17 is living there, occupation moulder. Margaret's children are living with the Robert Barnett family by 1880, no sign of Margaret herself in that census, so we presumed she had died. We assumed from the connections revealed in the census and elsewhere that she was another daughter of Robert and Mahala Barnett. However, a notice on Find-a-Grave seems to solve the problem: "Death Notice: CREASOR -- On Monday night, March 12, [1888] at 9:30 o'clock, Margaret A. Barr, wife of Milton Creasor, in the 44th year of her age. Funeral from the residence of her mother, Ellen Barr, No. 90 Seventeenth st., S.S. this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend. (Publication Source: Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette; Wednesday 14 March 1888; Page 5.)"

Apparently, there were two William Barr's in the vicinity of Van Buren Co., and it is not always clear which records pertain to each man. One of them, evidently not ours, married Mary Buckalew 28 jan 1844.
