[14111] According to internet information, the Mullins name was originally Molines and the family were thought to be Walloons or French Huguenots. See J. H. Beers & Co., Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania, vol. 2 (1898), p. 1144. In the 1850 census, the widow Agnes and her three youngest children are in Pine Township, Armstrong Co., PA. Family records from the Murdoch family disagree with the biographical sketch in some details.

Evidence for Mary Ann's maiden name comes from the death certificate of Mattie Barnett Baird, which, however, contains many errors. Her tombstone was transcribed as Mary C. Barnett. Also, there is some evidence that Joseph Barnett had an additional wife. She was not the mother of William H. Barnett, if his tombstone can be believed, and there is a long gap before the next child after William. The Ancestral File (1996) has 2 unnamed children by the first wife. One possible approach would be to check 1850 census for families from DE and MD.
Her obituary appeared in the Milton, IA newspaper:
"Mary A. Barnett died at her residence, in this place, Monday, February 10th, 1883, at 12 o'clock . Deceased was born June 15th, 1817; married to Jos. Barnett November 19th, 1841; was the mother of six children, four or whom are living; moved to this state from Peoria in March, 1869; was a member of the M. P. church about 30 years. Rev. J. W. Wright preached the funeral sermon at 2 PM Tuesday. Interment took place at the Cantril cemetary."
The official death record gives her birthplace as Pennsylvania. There is a possible explanation for "Delaware" as the mother's birthplace listed on Mattie Barnett Baird's death certificate. At least one census reading for her son Atchison indicates she was born in Maryland. Milton, Iowa was settled in the 1840's by a large contingent of families from Milton, Delaware, and so the story of the origins of the older generation in that vicinity might have contaminated the story passed down to Mattie's children. However, probably the most definitive census record, in Cedar Tp., Lee Co., IA, 1880, shows that she was born in Delaware, and that both of her parents were born in Ireland. Her age in that census is consistent with her obituary, and their son Elmer E. Barnett is still living with them, with the indication that his mother was born in Delaware.
If William H. was not one of her children, then we would have to assume 2 more children born in the 1840's who had died by 1883. They may be the two infants buried in the Cowan Cemetery in Armstrong Co., PA.
The birthdates of her first two identified children, Atchison C. and Martha Jane Barge, come from their death certificates. The dates are only two days apart. This suggests that one or the other of the dates is in error, and that Atchison and Martha Jane were twins. However, they are given different ages in census records, so it is probable that it is the year of birth that is in error for one of them, and that probably Atchison is a year or two older than indicated.
The record of Atchison's second marriage, in Jackson Co., MI, gives his mother's maiden name as Murdock, supplying the necessary confirmation of the information from his sister's death certificate.
There was a John Murdock family in Armstrong Co., PA in 1840 (Kittaning), and a family headed by Agnes Murdock in the 1850 census (Pine Township), likely John's widow, since the ages of other family members seem consistent in the two censuses. In the 1840 census, there is a daughter age 15-20, the right age to be Mary Ann. There are isolated mentions of other Murdock individuals associated with the county, but so far there is no direct evidence tying these individuals together. However, a descendant of that family has records of the marriage of Joseph Barnett and Mary Ann Murdoch, with the same marriage date mentioned in her obituary.
[4848] 1850 and 1860 census indicate PA, but 1870 and 1880 indicate DE. Birthdate from obituary. 1900 census listing for Mattie Barnett Baird shows mother b. MD. Tombstone reading of birthdate was 15 sep 1817.
[4849] Van Buren Co. death register gives age at death 68 years, 8 months, 4 days, yielding a birthdate of 15 jun 1814, rather than the 1817 date read from her tombstone, which is preferred as consistent with her obituary.
[4850] stone was read as 1888 instead of 1883. 1883 is consistent with age as recorded on 1880 census and with indication that Joseph Barnett was already widowed by 1884. 1888 is impossible from that viewpoint.
[14719] Marriage date given in wife's obituary. Place not noted in that source, but Joseph Barnett lived there continuously from birth until after the Civil War.
