Silver Springs School District 3855
NW quarter of section 29 Township 34 range 8 West of the second meridian
near Okla
Province of Saskatchewan, Canada

Silver Springs School District 3855 was located on the NW quarter of section 29 Township 34 range 8 West of the second meridian, as Eric Ashdown states, the school was about 4 miles south of Okla. The Rural Municipality of Hazel Dell No 335 offices are situated in Okla, SK S0A 2X0 The hamlet of Okla is mentioned in the online book Echoes of the past; a history of Lintlaw and district (Our Roots Nos Racines) page 295.

Looking through the schools chapter in this book there is no write up on Silver Springs, but there is a teacher photo

The Bellamy's relate that the Silver Spring post office opened in 1910 in Mr. and Mrs. Huntington's home, and the school was built around 1917 on NW 29-34-8. Mr. Huntington was again one of the organizers, and the first school chairman, and his wife the secretary. The first trustees are listed, and Herb Stevens the first teacher.

This book is searchable, there are a few folks that list themselves as pupils at the school, but no picture other than the one teacher photo, and no schoolhouse photo.

The other interesting thing is that the names were often used in the adjoining provinces, and there was another Silver Springs School in Manitoba SILVER SPRINGS SD # 119 1882 - 1962 POST OFFICE 1879-1898 Longitude and Latitude 49.266568 -98.794501 MANITOBA

After this, if you wish more info, perhaps contact the RM of Hazel Dell or hamlet office to see if there is a local history committee still active who may be of further help and assistance.

These are the museums near Okla, which may also have information.

Near to the RM of Hazel Dell, and the hamlet of Okla is the Parkland Library system. The Lintlaw Branch Library and Invermay Branch Library who may also have some further information.

Using the query boards and mailing list for the Kamsack Gen Web region may also direct your query to local residents.

The Department of Education (now currently known as the Ministry of Education) correspondence files for school districts are sometimes available for certain schools at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan. They look like the examples shown in regards to these two schools (unrelated to Silver Springs, just an example of correspondence in the files)

Leney School 255 and Landis School 2363

The other thing is to peruse the microfilm 3.12 of the 1955 school jubilees. These little Golden anniversary booklets were compiled by the students for the 50th Saskatchewan anniversary. These booklets contain varying information depending on the students enrolled and what they added, Sometimes they have photos othertimes not.

see Saskatchewan Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan Finding Aid IR21

and an introduction to the 1955 Golden Jubilee booklets.

I hope this is of some help to you. If you find anything out in the meantime, which could be used on the Saskatchewan One room school project, let me know, and it may help others as well.

Kind Regards

Julia Adamson
