"Passenger Lists Index" by Filby
- It is truly an index, which referrs you to hundreds, maybe
thousands,of. individual sources.You can get the name,age,general
destination and year ,from the index.
- This publication has referenced, by surname, a large number of immigrants to North America (mostly the U.S...but some Canadian immigrations are in there).
- The publication might give an entry similar to the following example:
O'Leary, Bridget Philadelphia, 1886 [30] p 10
O'Leary would be the surname, Bridget the first name, Philly, the port, 1886 the
year of entry, p10 is the page, and [30] is a particular publication. You
go to the front of the book and find out what publication [30] is...and then
scoot over the the ILL (Inter Library Loan) desk and order it (I always assume the library does
not have the book). Then, go home, turn on your computer, and go to the
NARA site and order the forms you need for the ship list. If your library
isn't too remote...you should get the book and the form about the same time.
Check through the book, see if the fellow(s) are yours, then order up the
manifest through NARA.
