Brief Chronicle of the Soldier Life of Each Volunteer.
On the 22d of April, 1861, in Pittsburg, an election of field officers of the 12th regiment, three months' volunteers, was held. Captain Norton McGiffin was chosen lieutenant colonel, serving as such the three months. Col. McGiffin had previously served his country as a private soldier in Co. K, 1st regiment, Pa. Vo., during the war with Mexico. After serving the three months, he assisted in recruiting the 85th regiment, Pa. Vol., to serve three years. He was chosen lieutenant colonel and served through the peninsular campaign. Owing to disease contracted while serving his country, he was compelled to resign May 12, 1862. He is now serving his country as U.S. consul at Port Hope, Canada.
After the promotion of col. McGiffin an election was held in the old post-office building at Pittsburg, Pa. James Armstrong, one of the editors of the Reporter and Tribune, also a Mexican veteran, was elected captain, serving as such three months; recruited Co. A, 100th regiment Pa. Vol., for three years; was promoted to major of regiment, September 10, 1861; to lieutenant colonel October 9th, 1861; resigned July 12, 1862; died in Greensburg, Pa., several years ago.
Wm. F. Templeton, first lieutenant, served three months; re-enlisted in Co. A, 100th regiment Pa. Vol., first lieutenant; promoted to captain, September 11, 1861; killed at Bull Run, Va., August 29, 1862.
Samuel F. Griffith, second lieutenant, served three months; afterward served as captain of provost guard at Pittsburg, Pa.; died in the spring of 1887 at Washington, Pa.
O.R. McNary, appointed first sergeant, served three month; acting post quartermaster at Pittsburg from October 1st, '61, to March 1st. '62; commissioned quartermaster of 103d regiment, Pa. Vol., taken prisoner at Plymouth, N.C., April 20th, 1864; was a prisoner nine months; wounded three times; resides at Leavenworth, Kansas.
David Brady, second sergeant: served three months; died at his home in Washington, Pa., date not known.
John Q. A. Boyd, third sergeant; served three months; re-enlisted in Co. I, 1st West Va. Vol. Infantry.
David Acheson, fourth sergeant; served three months; recruited Co. C, 110th regiment Pa. Vol., captain; kill at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2d, 1863.
John D. McKaban, first corporal; served three months; re-enlisted in Co. H, 46th regiment Pa. Vol.; died July 25th, '61 of wounds received at Peach Tree Creek, Ga., July 20th, 1864.
Henry Brown, second corporal; served three months; resides in Allegheny county.
Robert B. Elliott, third corporal, served three months; re-enlisted in Co. A, 100th regiment, Pa. Vol.; discharged with Co. July 24th, 1865; resides in Pittsburg, Pa.
Geo. B. Caldwell, fourth corporal; served three months; re-enlisted in Co. A., 100th regiment, Pa. Vol.; discharged to receive promotion; commissioned adjutant of the 12th W. Va.
Wm A. McCoy; served three months; re-enlisted in first West Virginia cavalry, Co. B.; first sergeant; promoted to first lieutenant; then to captain of Co., C, same regiment; resigned Nov. 11th, 1864, on account of wounds received at Warrington Junction, Va., May 3d, 1863; resides at Triadelphia, W.Va.
Simon W. Lewis , served three months; re-enlisted in Co. A, 100th regiment Pa. Vol.; was killed by falling from top of a car, near Paris, Kentucky, in 1863.

Co. E survivors consider it an honor and a great pleasure to state that it has not been necessary to add "Deserter" after any comrads name. A company record second to none in the State of Pennsylvania or elsewhere.
Of the original company 22 re-enlisted in Co. A, 100th Pa. Vol. and of those 22, 11 are now dead.
AN OLD TIME PRINTER
Wm. T. Hamilton, of Wheeling, Visits Washington and Renews His youth.
Among the veterans who attended the banquet and reunion of Co. E Thursday evening, was Wm. T. Hamilton, of Wheeling, who was a member of the above named company. Mr. Hamilton will be remembered by many of the older citizens of Washington. He was born in West Middletown. In 1849 he commenced his apprenticeship at the art preservative with Seth T. Hurd, who was then publishing the Commonwealth in the frame building which stood on the present site of W. W. Smith's Iron Hall. After serving three years he went to Wheeling where he set type for some time and then came back to Washington and worked for two years on the Reporter, then Edited by John Bausman in the frame building, on East Beau Street, opposite the old Fulton House Hotel Main stables. After leaving here he worked in different parts of the country, but principally on the papers of Wheeling, and up until three years ago was able to set type, when his eye sight almost completely failed him. Notwithstanding his advanced years, Mr. Hamilton is a remarkably well preserved man and of massive frame. He is an intelligent and agreeable talker, full of reminiscences of the days when the old-fashioned hand printing press was considered the acme of perfection, and when electric light and street cars, natural gas and even railroads had not invaded the quiet town of Washington. Mr. Hamilton is a brother of Mrs. Miller, wife of Julius P. Miller, Esq., of this place.
